Dunedin had the only win on Wednesday, an eighth inning four run burst won it. Conner Greene pitched six good innings. Lansing conceded four runs in the eighth in their wild game. They lost 14-12 with seven of their runs being unearned. Tom Robson had a rough start. Buffalo and New Hampshire lost tight games. Dalton Pompey had two more hits.

The two split season teams, Dunedin and Lansing, are a week away from the end of their first halves. Neither team will make the playoffs from the first half, they will have to play better in the second half.

Rochester 3 Buffalo 1

With Wade LeBlanc and Tommy Milone on the mound you would expect a tight game and it was. LeBlanc went seven innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Unfortunately for him he allowed three hits, one a double, in one inning and that was the inning that produces two runs. Ryan Tepera was responsible for the third run, in the ninth, with a walk and a single.

Darrell Ceciliani had three hits and the only RBI. Junior Lake had one hit and scored the only run. Dalton Pompey had two hits, a walk and two K's. Steve Wickens, from Whitby, Ontario, is hitting .203 for Rochester.

Richmond 4 New Hampshire 3

Both teams had eleven hits, all of the Fisher Cats hits were singles, Richmond had a homer and two doubles. John Anderson was the starter for New Hampshire. He pitched like Casey Lawrence, lots of hits, no walks, a few strikeouts and runs. Anderson was charged with all four runs on ten hits over six innings. His ERA is 5.20 and he hasn't found a hot streak yet this year. Matt Dermody pitched two innings and preserved his zero ERA. In AA Dermody has pitched 9.2 innings with five hits and one walk. He has nine K's, a good start in AA.

Dwight Smith singled in Jorge Flores for the first run in the third inning. In the fifth inning Melky Mesa and Rowdy Tellez singled in runs but the inning ended with Mesa out at home on a throw and that could have been the game tying run. Smith, Mesa and Roemen Fields had two hits each.

St Lucie 2 Dunedin 6

The Jays led 2-1 going to the eighth. Colton Turner loaded the bases with three ground balls and added a wild pitch to let the Mets tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth Ryan McBroom led off with a double. Anthony Alford walked. Emilio Guerrero delivered the big hit, a two run double. Dickie Thon singled in run five and Anthony Davis doubled in the last run. Guerrero also drove in the first run. Richard Urena doubled in the second run. McBroom, Guerrero, Urena and Thon each had two hits.

Conner Greene had a good start, six punch-outs in six innings. That tied his high for the season. Greene walked three and gave up five hits. Carlos Ramirez pitched the ninth.

Lansing 12 Lake County 14

Lansing scored four runs in the top of the first and with Tom Robson on the mound, coming back down to Lansing, it looked good for the Lugnuts. But Robson was not good and after two innings Robson was done and Lansing trailed 7-4. But then they scored five in the top of the third to take a 10-8 lead. They held a lead until the bottom of the eighth when four runs put Lake County up for good. All 14 runs conceded by Lansing were earned, but only 5 of Lansing's 12 runs were earned, the Captains made six errors.

As mentioned Robson gave up seven runs in two innings. This was his first start after a spell on the DL, he has some catching up to do. Ryan Cook gave up three more but it was Dan Lietz who took the loss with four runs conceded in the eighth. The hitters had eleven hits for their 12 runs but there were six errors and seven walks. Gunnar Heidt, Jake Thomas and Juan Kelly each had two hits. Lane Thomas had a two run home run.

Pompey had 3 more hits in a Buffalo win today.  He's up to .312 with a .390 OBP. (.418 against RHP).  He's ready any time and the club does need his skill set.

Re: Pompey. I just don't see him being called up before September unless he blows up. To get him regular at bats you would have to have a very tough conversation with Jose in his free agent year about playing at first base and DH more often. That would in turn cause more problems finding playing time for Edwin and Smoak.

If you want to be charitable to the new regime, you could call them conservative when it comes to promoting prospects. If you were a bit more cynical you might say they are meticulous managers of service time.

I like Pompey, but I still don't see how the Jays can give him regular playing time on the current roster, unless they reduce the ABs of Bautista and/or Encarnacion.  And while the latter two aren't hitting as well as they normally do, they are likely to heat up at any moment.  Given their production over the past 3 seasons (among the best in the league), I don't see how you can reduce their playing time in order to give ABs to an unproven minor-leaguer who may or may not be ready to be a major-leaguer.  It's all very well to have faith in Dalton Pompey, but now is not the time to reduce the playing time of Bautista or Encarnacion.

If we honestly believe that Bautista would be willing to play 1B while Pompey patrols RF (which is doubtful, but let's even imagine this is true), you'd still have to trust that Smoak can be benched and you'd have to believe that Pompey is a better hitter than Smoak, which is again doubtful.  Bautista, Edwin and Smoak were very productive for the Jays last year, and I don't see any reason to cut back on their playing time to make room for an unproven rookie.  Pompey has an OPS of .758 in Buffalo this season, which is almost identical to his career line at the AAA level over the past three years.  A normal adjustment would cut at least 30 or 40 points off that OPS when he moves to the majors.  That would be far less than the comparable numbers of Bautista, Edwin or Smoak this season or last season.

Alternatively you'd have to put Pompey into the Carrera role, which would be bad for Pompey's development, since he needs regular playing time.

Finally, I also notice that Pompey has played LF in 9 games this season.  I'm not convinced that he could step into Pillar's role in the majors, although he'd be a capable back-up in case of injury.

I wasn't suggesting that the club is making a great error in not calling him up now.  He is ready.  It would be reasonable to reduce the playing time of Smoak, Encarnacion and Bautista modestly such that Pompey could play about 1/2 the time even when everybody is healthy (allowing for days off for Saunders and Pillar occasionally as well).  Given the time he has already had in Buffalo, I don't think that playing half time would slow his development.

To sum up factors of Pompey's call-up to Toronto,
Favoring:
He's ready any time and the club does need his skill set.
He'd be a capable back-up in case of injury.
Reducing Smoak, EE, Bautista, Saunders, Pillar PAs for Pompey,

Not-favoring

Given their production over the past 3 seasons (among the best in the league), reduce their playing time in order to give ABs to an unproven minor-leaguer is not reasonable.

Pompey has shown legit solid power at every level including mlb....except for at AAA, where he's shown no pop at all.

Alternatively, Pompey with the Bisons could be:
1) moved out of the leadoff to batting third. So far, to me the #3 slot is a rotating door for Bisons' hitter. Given that Pompey has not shown hitting for power and some PAs available before his possible callup, why not relieving him the burden of getting on base to concentrate on developing to a more rounded hitter ?
2) Consequently, after he has moved out, are some hitters needed to develop hitting given their good pitch selection ? So far Adams and Kotchman are veteran who have good BB/K ratio. Brown hit well in this afternoon game at the #2 slot. So how about Adams or Brown alternating at leadoff and #2 against the LHSP and RHSP respectively ? That is
Against LHSP: R 2B/3B Adams, L OF Brown, S OF Pompey, R DH/1B Montero, R 3B/1B Dominguez Against RHSP, L OF Brown, R 2B/3B Adams, S OF Pompey, L DH/1B Kotchman, R 1B/DH Montero ?
