The affiliates posted a 1-3 mark on Tuesday. The best performances came from a rehabbing Blue Jay and arguably the system's best pitching prospect of 2016.
Toledo 7 Buffalo 1
Buffalo, NY - The Tigers affiliate scored six times in the final two frames to beat the Bisons. The Mud Hens got to Bo Schultz (0-1) and Bobby Korecky for three runs apiece. They each had an unearned run on an error by Jio Mier at short and a passed ball by Tony Sanchez. Schultz got just one out while Korecky That ruined a solid start by Wade LeBlanc, who was also victimized by an unearned run over 6-1/3 innings. He scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. Ben Rowen finished up the seventh with a ground ball double play to strand a pair of runners. Colt Hynes completed the ninth with a strikeout.
The Bisons tied the game at 1-1 with Alexi Casilla doing the heavy lifting. He singled, stole second and third and scored on an error. Casilla, Dalton Pompey, Matt Dominguez and Domonic Brown divided Buffalo's eight hits evenly among themselves. Pompey had a stolen base while Brown and Darrell Ceciliani had the only walks. Casey Kotchman was hit by a pitch. Junior Lake, Tony Sanchez and Mier were a combined 0-for-10 at the bottom of the order.
Portland 5 New Hampshire 3
Portland, ME - The Fisher Cats scored first and last but least as they lost their second in a row to the Red Sox affiliate. They manufactured a run in the first on a Roemon Fields bunt single and steal of second before advancing on a fly ball and a Dwight Smith Jr. RBI groundout. Jorge Saez socked a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth to make the score more respectable. Saez and Rowdy Tellez both had two-hit games while Jon Berti had two walks. Smith and Parmley had the other base knocks. K.C. Hobson and Matt Dean walked once. Jorge Flores was 0-for-3.
John Anderson (2-4, 5.14) met the minimum requirement of the quality start guidelines, allowing seven hits and two walks with only one strikeout. He gave his infielders lots of work as they recorded 11 out of his 14 outs in play. John Stilson was jolted for two runs on two hits and a hit by pitch but struck out two in the seventh. Daniel Schlereth rung up two of the three batters he faced in a perfect eighth.
Dunedin 4 Fort Myers 0
Dunedin, FL - The D-Jays had to contend with another Twins first-round pick on the mound in as many days in Tyler Jay but Francisco Rios (1-1, 2.92) brought his A-game to the mound to beat the sixth overall pick of the 2015 draft. The 21 year-old Mexican retired 13 in a row and faced just one batter over the minimum over seven shutout innings of two-hit ball. Rios struck out six and did not hand out any free passes. He also distributed his 12 outs in play evenly among his infielders and outfielders en route to a Game Score of 79. Aaron Loup walked two but struck out one in two-thirds of an innings. Carlos Ramirez stranded Loup's runners and got the final four outs for the save. He gave up a hit but struck out one.
Offensively, it was the Devon Travis show. He broke the goose egg with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning before doubling home two more runs in the seventh. Travis would then score on a triple by Derrick Loveless. Travis had two hits and a walk, Emilio Guerrero had a couple of knocks and Mike Reeves drew a pair of walks. Anthony Alford had a single, a walk and an assist after throwing out a runner at third base on an 8-5 double play. Ryan McBroom doubled while J.D. Davis walked and stole a base.
Fort Wayne 4 Lansing 3
Fort Wayne, IN - A three-run sixth by the Padres affiliate proved to be the difference in this one. Tayler Saucedo (1-5, 5.94) surrendered all four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over 6-2/3 innings. Starlyn Suriel stranded a runner and finished up the seventh and eighth innings with just one hit allowed and one strikeout.
Juan Kelly tied it for Lansing with a home run in the fourth inning. RBI singles by Gunnar Heidt in the fifth and Andrew Guillotte in the seventh accounted for the other runs. Heidt was thrown out at home plate on Guillotte's base hit. The Lugnuts had a chance to tie in the ninth after Lane Thomas singled, was bunted over to second and advanced another 90 feet on a balk with one out but he would be stranded. Aaron Attaway had a double and a walk. Max Pentecost, Ryan Hissey, Josh Almonte, and Carl Wise all had base hits for a nine-way tie on the Lugnuts hit leader board.
