All four affiliates scored first with three of them doing so in their first at-bat. Those three all found the win column Monday night.
Buffalo 3 Durham 0
Durham, NC - The Bisons scored early and late to pick up a victory on the road. Jesus Montero gave the Herd a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the first inning and Junior Lake singled home the other run in the ninth against former Blue Jay Danny Farquhar. Montero had three hits while Matt Dominguez and Domonic Brown had two apiece with Brown drawing the lone walk. Dalton Pompey and Tony Sanchez had the other safeties.
Arnold Leon (1-0, 2.25) mowed down the first 12 hitters he faced before giving up a walk and a single to start the fifth inning. He bounced back by striking out two of the next three hitters to end his five-inning outing against the Rays affiliate. The former Athletic struck out seven to earn a Game Score of 71. Montreal native Chris Leroux kept up the dominant pitching by striking out six over three innings of one-hit ball. He struck out the side in the sixth but he had to get a fourth out after his first strikeout reached base on a wild pitch. David Aardsma whiffed two of the three batters he faced to get his fourth save.
New Hampshire 2 Portland 1
Manchester, NH - The Fisher Cats also scored twice in the first inning and that was enough to hold off the Red Sox affiliate. They were a home run short of a first inning cycle as Jon Berti tripled, Dwight Smith Jr. doubled and Matt Dean singled with the latter two hits driving in runs. Smith had two hits and Ian Parmley collected the other. Christian Lopes walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Berti also took one for the team. Rowdy Tellez and Roemon Fields were a combined 0-for-8 and Jorge Flores was 0-for-3.
Luis Santos (3-0, 3.82) lasted seven strong innings and racked up a Game Score of 69 with just one run allowed on four hits and two walks. He struck out four and induced five ground ball outs. Santos set down 9 out of 10 at one point. His only run was the result of two-out doubles in the fourth. John Stilson got away with a walk and a hit in a shutout eighth after Parmley, Flores and Berti teamed up on an 8-6-5 play to cut down a runner at third. Wil Browning struck one out in a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
Dunedin 6 Clearwater 2
Dunedin, FL - Dunedin also scored in the first inning, courtesy of a Richard Urena homer to right-center field. A Ryan McBroom sacrifice fly in the third a Mike Reeves single in the fourth padded the Blue Jay lead to 3-0. Reeves singled home a D.J. Davis triple in the sixth and a J.D. Davis fielder's choice led to another run. McBroom would park one behind the center field wall in the seventh. Reeves led the hit parade with three while Urena, D.J. Davis, Jason Leblebijian and Dickie Joe Thon all had two-hit games. Thon drew the only free pass. David Harris took one for the team and also stole a base. D.J. Davis also stole a base and added a double for two extra-base hits on the night.
Justin Shafer threw 4-1/3 no-hit innings but he battled some control issues in the form of four walks and two hit by pitches, which led to a run. He did record seven of his 10 outs in play on the ground and struck out a pair. Carlos Ramirez (2-0) only stranded one of two inherited runners but pitched 2-1/3 innings of scoreless ball with two strikeouts. Tim Mayza stranded a runner for Ramirez and struck out three over 1-1/3 perfect frames to lower his earned run average to 0.49. Jose Fernandez gave up an unearned run in the ninth.
Bowling Green 7 Lansing 2
Bowling Green, KY - A converted touchdown by the Rays affiliate in the seventh spoiled the bid for a perfect night on the farm. Sean Reid-Foley walked four over his three-inning outing but he struck out four and yielded just a pair of hits to keep the home side in the gutter. Conor Fisk (2-2, 4.91) also put up three zeros on the linescore but he could not retire any of the six batters he faced in the seventh. He coughed up a three-run homer and allowed another trio of runs in his three-plus innings of work. Gustavo Pierre allowed an inherited run to score and gave up one of his own before getting through the eighth.
The Lugnuts led this one 2-0 after home runs by Andrew Guillotte and Ryan Hissey in the third. Hissey had the only two-hit game for the Lugnuts while Guillotte ran the count to ball four twice, once on purpose. Carl Wise and Josh Almonte also got in the hit column. Lane Thomas had the golden sombrero and Juan Kelly had the hat trick but drew a walk.
