Dalton Pompey reached base four times on Sunday and stole two bases. Emilio Guerrero came off the DL hitting, he had four hits. Despite those performances all the affiliates lost.

There was discussion of the Jays assignments to start the season, they seemed very conservative. The players have been doing little to prove them wrong. Conner Greene and Sean Reid-Foley pitched on Sunday and were OK but they are not yet demonstrating they need to be promoted. Early in the season some of the stand-out offensive performers include Pompey, Jorge Flores, Richard Urena and Andrew Guillotte.

Pawtucket 7 Buffalo 4

Buffalo took a one run lead to the ninth but David Aardsma blew his first save. Aardsma was charged with four runs. Chris Leroux had started and went four innings, Leroux allowed two runs. Dustin Antolin gave up the third run before Ben Rowen and Ryan Tepera pitched perfectly.

Dalton Pompey had a good game, he had two hits, two walks and two steals. He was also gunned down once by Blake Swihart. Pompey is hitting .429. The Bisons were trailing 3-2 in the eighth before Matt Dominguez hit a two run home run. Other than Pompey, Jesus Montero is hitting .308. The rest of the team is like the parent club, lots of one's in the averages.

On Saturday the Bisons lost, Andy Burns had two hits and Domonic Brown hit a home run. On Friday the Bisons could not handle prospect Alex Meyer and lost 2-1. Chad Girodo pitched two innings and still has a zero ERA.

Trenton 9 New Hampshire 4

The Fisher Cats were never really in this game. Shane Dawson had pitched very well in his first start but that didn't carry through to start number two. Dawson was charged with four runs in 4.1 innings. He gave up six hits and four walks.

New Hampshire did have eleven hits., all but one a single. Roemen Fields, Jon Berti,Rowdy Tellez and Jorge Flores had two hits each. Flores continues to hit, he is at .400. Berti is at .333. Dwight Smith is hitting .097 and Rowdy Tellez is better but only at .207.

New Hampshire lost on Saturday, Flores had two hits and John Stilson gave up three runs in an inning. John Anderson pitched 5.2 shutout innings on Friday and New Hampshire cruised to a 7-0 win. Fields was the only hitter with two hits.

Palm Beach 7 Dunedin 6 - 10 innings

Dunedin led after seven but gave up a run in the eighth and another in the tenth to take the loss. They did load the bases with one out in the bottom of the tenth but couldn't score a run. Conner Greene made the start and was average. He lasted 4.1 innings and gave up three hits and twp walks. But he only registered one strikeout. His ERA is 3.14 but he is not dominating. Dunedin pitchers gave up 16 walks. Carlos Ramirez walked five hitters in a row before being pulled. Adonys Cardona walked the bases loaded in the next inning before he too was pulled. Cardona still sports a zero ERA but has allowed nine base runners in 4.2 innings. But at this stage just pitching is an achievement for Cardona.

Emilio Guerrero spent most of 2015 in AA but started the season on the DL. He was activated on sunday and assigned to Dunedin. He went 4-4 with a walk and added two RBI. Richard Urena had two more hits and is hitting .341. Ryan McBroom is hitting .277. Derrick Loveless hit a home run and drove in three.

Dunedin walked it off in the thirteenth inning on Saturday. Urena had three hits. Alonzo Gonzalez and Chris Rowley combined for seven innings of shutout relief. Rowley still has a zero ERA with four hits and no walks in seven innings. He has four K's. Dunedin also walked it off on Friday, in ten innings this time. Urena and Davis Harris had two hits. Harris had three RBI. Juliandry Higuera started and did well. Tom Robson relieved him but was again hit around for four runs in 1.2 innings.

Lansing 2 Bowling Green 5

Lansing had just five hits and only two after the third inning. Their two runs came in the fourth with singles by Josh Almonte, JC Cardenas and Andrew Guillotte. Guillotte is leading the offense with a .429 average. Juan Kelly is averaging .348 and Ryan Hissey .313.

The starter was Sean Reid-Foley. Like Greene he was average. He went 4.2 inning and was charged with two earned runs. The hitters had four hits and four walks. SRF did have four K's. SRF has a 1.69 ERA but he has walked eight in 10.2 innings.

On Saturday Lansing scored three runs in the ninth in a two run win. Angel Perdomo went 4.2 innings and gave up two runs. Guillotte had two hits, two walks and three RBI. Lansing won easily on Friday. Kelly led the offense with two doubles. Francisco Rios had nine punchouts in 4.2 innings.

What do the jays do to call up pompey? Put Bautista at 1st? Sit pillar and saunders. It sounds like he might force their hand

Bautista will likely throw a fit if he has to move off RF in his free agent year, so the best alternative might be: Pompey/Pillar/Bautista left to right, Encarnacion at 1B, and Saunders at DH. Then they can use Bautista as the DH periodically to rest him and Saunders can play the outfield in that scenario.

“I’ve played third base extensively in my career. I think first base is an option. I’m not as limited even at my age [35]. I had versatility early in my career,” Bautista said.

Dunno if Bautista would throw a fit?  he's such a team-oriented guy - if he believed a position switch was warranted, IMO he'd do it.  there must be some precedents out there of veteran players being asked to switch positions in their walk year?   I can't think of any off-hand.

That said, plenty of playing time to be had as a 4th OF / defensive sub / pinch runner.  There's been lot's of talk of EE playing first here and there, opening up a DH spot for Bautista or Saunders.

This Chris Rowley kid has a great story - akin to Taylor Cole -  worth a read for anyone who missed this in the offseason.

It's not an all or nothing proposition.  Bautista could start in right field against LHP with Colabello at first base, and start at first base against RHP.   Allowing for lost time due to injury, it would likely mean full-time workloads for Pompey, Pillar, Bautista and Encarnacion and less work for Colabello and Smoak.  It probably won't happen for a couple of months because of service time considerations (not that I agree with that approach).

yeah it works especially with the desire to rest saunders occasionally.

have the two younger healthy very good D guys fulltime in CF and LF, and rotate saunders bautista ee in the rf/1b/dh slots.

enough to keep joey a nominal RF while also giving him the chance to add versatility to his resume.

If they told Bautista he'd be a DH or 1B full-time in the season before he tests free agency, I'm not sure he'd be thrilled about it. Maybe I'm misjudging his ego, but star players usually like staying in 'their' positions as long as they can. If he plays 1B and DH periodically? Sure. Full-time? I have my doubts that he'd be too happy with it.

However, if he is open to moving to 1B, then they should do it as soon as they call Pompey up (whenever that is). That would help the team in many different ways.

Baseball America is reporting that Alford has a right knee injury and the club wants him to rehab it, rather than go for surgery. That argument suggests surgery could knock him out of action for a longish period. I assume its ligament damage of some sort.
Mike Green - Monday, April 18 2016 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#321200) #
Carrera gets the start in right-field today while Bautista DHs.  That will make 4 starts in 14 games for Carrera, and that is without any effort in having Bautista play first base at all.

beat me to it, mike. exactly right.

Once Pompey has 89 days in the minors he might be called up. He has 88 days of ML experience so on day 89 the Jays gain a full year of control. I get the feeling the current management team is the type who would do that.

Fangraph’s Dan Farnsworth's ridiculously thorough take on the system:

AJ Jimenez has been activated, Humberto Quintero released. Robinzon Diaz was also released.
jerjapan - Monday, April 18 2016 @ 05:54 PM EDT (#321275) #
A bit surprised that Quintero was released as he seemed the logical callup to plop on the bench in case on injury to Martin or Thole.  Neither Sanchez or Jiminez have options.

Farnsworth's prospect list is interesting - Perdomo at 9, Fields at 10 and a pretty low opinion on vlad Jr.

fringe fiver carston cistulli has OF Jonathan Davis as his sleeper, and Dave Cameron likes the lower level talent, noting that the sheer volume of young toolsy guys will likely see a few players take a big step this season.

re Alford: usually surgery immediately is best in these situations...rehab rarely results in recovery and just prolongs the absence

far too early to give up on any of present roster or to move Pompey up imo

I'm still somewhat agnostic on the second part of that equation, but how many more ABs do we need from Carrera before we are comfortable giving up on him? For me, the number is zero.

whiterasta80 - Monday, April 18 2016 @ 07:41 PM EDT (#321280) #
I'm with Four Seamer. Carrera has proven nothing more than a replacement level player. If we had a manager who played the 4th Of 30 games per year then this would not be a problem but our bench probably gets 80-100 games. For a team with playoff ambitions I think that's enough to go with pompey (or at least ceciliani)
Mike Green - Monday, April 18 2016 @ 07:49 PM EDT (#321281) #
Despite the ugly batting average, Tellez is off to a nice start in double A. He hit his 2nd homer tonight and has 10 walks and only 3 strikeouts.
scottt - Monday, April 18 2016 @ 08:04 PM EDT (#321284) #
I was pleased to see Carrera pinch hit for. Maybe it's a sign that somebody will get the call before too long.

It was weird to see Happ come back in the 8th. Pitch count was low, but so what?
I don't think Happ wants to start completing games.

Storen could be on the verge of moving to middle relief.

Not surprised at all to see Pillar getting hits and Going making outs.
I already pointed out that it was all BABIP.

And yes, finally, the lefties were not back to back.
That was nice.

Parker - Tuesday, April 19 2016 @ 01:43 PM EDT (#321320) #
I think Carrera's gonna have to play his way out of a job. Gibbons clearly loves the guy, right or wrong. He sure can lay down a bunt, anyway.
