A 3-0 Monday night on the farm featured a ton of offence, especially from the man who was selected by the Blue Jays with their first round pick in 2012. It was the kind of performance that will make the Jays brass feel so nice. Meantime, one game was suspended due to fog while New Hampshire had the night off.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 2 Buffalo 1 (Suspended due to fog)

Buffalo, NY
— This game will resume later today in the bottom of the fifth inning. Daniel Norris was nicked for a couple of runs in the first two innings by the Yankees affiliate. Despite five hits and three walks, he kept this game from going off the rails by limiting Scranton to a couple of runs over five frames. He picked off a runner at first and struck out three for a Game Score of 51. Norris set down six in a row at one point.

Sean Ochinko
got the Bisons on the board with an RBI double but he was denied a second run batted in when Daric Barton was thrown out at the plate to end the fourth inning. Ochinko and Barton are both 2-for-2 so far. Ramon Santiago had a base hit while Luke Scott and Andy Burns both had walks.

Dunedin 8 Charlotte 3

Dunedin, FL
— Dunedin used four two-run innings to upend the Rays affiliate. Mitch Nay put the D-Jays in flight with a leadoff home run in the second inning and had a sacrifice fly to score another run in the third. In between, Christian Lopes had an RBI single and L.B. Dantzler had an RBI double. Roemon Fields collected his first Florida State League home run with a two-run shot in the fourth before adding a two-run single in the sixth. Nay and Fields were the Dunedin hit leaders with two apiece. Lopes was the on-base leader with a hit and two walks. J.D. Davis, Derrick Loveless and Martin 'Funky Cold' Medina also had base hits but Davis struck out three times and Loveless went down on strikes twice. Matt Dean and Dawel Lugo were both 0-for-3 with a base on balls.

Jairo Labourt (2-3, 3.30) gave up a run on seven hits and two walks over six frames while striking six men out. Seven of his 10 outs in play were on the ground. His Game Score was 58. Matt Smoral had a rough seventh inning as a hit and two walks led to a run but he did strike out a batter. Carlos Ramirez pitched two-thirds of an inning with a 2-1 walk/strikeout total. Chad Girodo stranded the Ramirez walks by striking out all four batters he faced in 1-1/3 innings.

Lansing 12 Peoria 4

Lansing, MI
— The Lugnuts emulated the parent club with an eight-run victory of their own by destroying the Cardinals affiliate. Peoria held brief leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but a Jason Leblebijian two-run home run tied the game in the third inning before D.J. Davis - who singled ahead of Leblebijian's dinger - emptied the bases with a three-run double in the fourth to put Lansing ahead for good. Davis wasn't done yet as he connected for a grand slam home run in the sixth and added an RBI single in the seventh after Ryan McBroom contributed a two-run double. Davis was 4-for-5 with two doubles and eight RBI. McBroom and Richard Urena had multi-hit nights with McBroom also getting a base on balls. Anthony Alford singled and walked twice while Rowdy Tellez posted a '1' in the hit and walk departments. Leblebijian also heard ball four once from the home plate umpire. Mike Reeves had a single but Chris Carlson and Tim Locastro were both 0-for-4.

Shane Dawson
(5-3, 3.19) made it through five innings to get the win, surrendering three runs on five hits, three walks and a hit by pitch but  hestruck out six for a Game Score of 50. One of the runs was unearned after a Davis error in right. I think I he made up for it though. Tim Mayza was made for the last Peoria run on two hits and a walk and a walk but he racked up two K's in two innings. Dusty Isaacs was only dusted for a hit in his two innings, striking out one.

DSL Blue Jays 8 DSL Padres 1 (8 Innings)

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
— The Padres scored first but the Jays scored next, last and most to even their record at 4-4 and they didn't have to play a ninth inning thanks to Mother Nature. Jesus Navarro singled home a Sterling Guzman double before scoring on a Victor Figuereo home run in the fourth inning. The Jays put up another three-spot in the fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from Cristian Peguero and Manuel Herazo. A Peguero ground out and an error led to single runs in the next two innings. Navarro and Hezaro had two hits apiece. Norberto Obeso singled, walked twice and stole a base. Guzman had a walk to go along with his extra-base hit. Kevin Vicuna and Francisco Rodriguez each had a base hit and a base on balls with Vicuna stealing a base. Jesus Severino was 0-for-4 with a walk.

Wilfi Aleton
allowed the lone Friars run on two hits and a walk over three innings, striking out one for a Game Score of 51. Jose Dominguez (1-0) pitched three shutout frames of two-hit ball, walking one, plunking one and whiffing three. Joel Espinal worked the last two innings and was nicked for just one walk while striking out three.

I am not sure DJ Davis has anything to prove in Lansing either. Batting .408 after 13 games.

He might be moving up the prospect chart...

It might be time to go up another Level.
Smaj - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 06:13 AM EDT (#302148) #
Way too early for DJ Davis to move up. This is the first real success he has had in the minors. Let's see him continue to have success & control the strike zone with regularity.
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 08:23 AM EDT (#302156) #
Agreed. And the Dunedin bats have been horrible this year...not sure I wan't to rush him into that environment.

Is Dunedin where hitting prospects go to die?

Thon, Nay, Lugo, Dean....what's going on??

I love that we took two pitchers in the draft last night because, have we ever developed a top position player??
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 08:32 AM EDT (#302158) #
Dalton Pompey did pretty well in Dunedin last year, and may yet become the best Blue Jay position player developed since Aaron Hill.

The draft focus has been on pitching for many years, so it is not really too surprising, but even at that, the record is not great.  Travis Snider, Eric Eiland, Justin Jackson and quite a number of others have been drafted in the first two rounds and were disappointments at one level or another.

Dalton Pompey is closer to another stint in Dunedin than he is to being a top bat in the majors.
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 08:37 AM EDT (#302160) #
Brett Lawrie, though we didn't draft, is another top bat we unsuccessfully developed.

I'm all in favour of using top picks on pitchers based on the history. Maybe we should trade Urena, Davis, Tellez and Alford this year while we still can.

O ye of little patience.

Of course, the club has traded batting prospects like Marisnick and Snider who may yet become good players (or better than that).
China fan - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 10:23 AM EDT (#302165) #
Snider was traded primarily because he was out of options and the Jays couldn't guarantee him a full-time roster slot in the majors.   I'm sure they would have kept him somewhere in the system if they could have done so.
JB21 - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 10:25 AM EDT (#302166) #
Does Yan Gomes count?
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 10:30 AM EDT (#302168) #
I'd say Yan counts. No to Snider and Marisnick.
uglyone - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 11:32 AM EDT (#302172) #
lawrie has a career 104wrc+ thru his early 20s. that's successful development.
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 11:47 AM EDT (#302176) #
I don't know what "successful development" is by your standards, but it's likely not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about developing a Jose Bautista, EE, Josh Donaldson, Russell Martin, Jan Gomes through our system. We don't have a good record. I don't think Brett Lawrie disproves that.

For fun, I took a stab at a current Top 10 Prospect list. It was more difficult than it has been in a while.

1. Jeff Hoffman, RHP
2. Roberto Osuna, RHP
3. Daniel Norris, LHP
4. Dalton Pompey, CF
5. Miguel Castro, RHP
6. Anthony Alford, CF
7. DJ Davis, CF
8. Jon Harris, RHP
9. Sean Reid-Foley, RHP
10. Jairo Labourt, LHP

in the conversation: Urena, Smith Jr, Pentecost, Tellez, DeJong, others??
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:03 PM EDT (#302180) #
It's a mistake to measure development of a position player by offensive performance alone.  Lawrie was a catcher and second baseman prior to arrival here, and was moved to third base.  He's been a good player when healthy, taking into account both offence and defence.  The big issue for him is staying healthy.
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:11 PM EDT (#302181) #
We definitely have widely different top 10s.  I wouldn't have Hoffman anywhere near the top spot because he hasn't yet performed in a way that suggests full recovery from TJ.  It may very well come; I know the velocity is back, but TJ is not routine surgery.

Mine would probably go: Pompey, Norris, Urena, Hoffman... (assuming that Osuna no longer qualifies).

cybercavalier - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:17 PM EDT (#302182) #
How about Adam Lind ?

By the way, would Ryan Goins picks up some of Ichiro's slap-and-run batting styles, given that Goins' batting would not general power and getting Ichiro via trade (including Navarro) ? In essence, Goins can pull or slap the ball, resulting in more hits. Also works on base stealing too.

ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:31 PM EDT (#302185) #
Pompey is a bit of a one-year wonder to be a top prospect, but then, maybe Hoffman is too. Pompey had decent years in 2011 and 2013, not many games in 2012, then a meteoric rise in 2014 and fall from grace this year. Difficult to evaluate.

I have nothing against Lawrie, just don't think he's an example of developing a top bat at the ML level.
whiterasta80 - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#302187) #
Carlos Delgado clearly was a top position player that we developed. Vernon Wells, Shawn Green, John Olerud, Jesse Barfield, Tony Fernandez (UFA mind you).

More recently its been pretty ugly, but for a while we could turn out some pretty good major leaguers. Just never a decent catcher or 2B
hypobole - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#302188) #
I'm with Mike on 2 counts.

First, Lawrie was a bat without a position when we got him. Mike Mordecai among others did a ton of work with him and developed him into a premier defensive 3rd baseman.

Urena had a reputation as an excellent defensive shortstop, but limited hit tool and even less power. What he's doing in the MWL at 19 is awesome and definitely puts him in our Top 3 prospects.
hypobole - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:38 PM EDT (#302189) #
Aaron Hill was a feared hitter for some time. Player development did their job. It was our hitting coach who failed to straighten him around when he went on his downward spiral.
uglyone - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:57 PM EDT (#302194) #
Real tough to do a top 10. I guess sanchez is graduated now.

1. Osuna
2. Norris
3. Hoffman
4. Sanchez
5. Travis
6. Pompey
7. Pentecost
8. Harris
9. Castro
10. Alford
11. Urena
12. Jansen
13. Tellez
14. Smith
15. Davis

with 5 of those guys likely graduated soon (Osuna, Sanchez, Travis, Pompey, Norris).
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 12:58 PM EDT (#302195) #
Agreed on all three points, hypobole.
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 01:00 PM EDT (#302196) #
I think Sanchez has already passed 50 IP?

Norris is about 20IP away and Pompey is about 10AB away from graduating.

Osuna hasn't hit 50IP yet, but is certainly tracking that way at the moment.
uglyone - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 01:05 PM EDT (#302197) #
so if we graduate all the guys who are past or close - osuna sanchez norris travis pompey - my list looks like:

1. Hoffman
2. Pentecost
3. Harris
4. Castro
5. Alford
6. Urena
7. Jansen
8. Tellez
9. Smith
10. Davis

though there might be some short season kids that squeeze into those bottom spots.

and of course Guerrero Jr. probably slips into the 2 spot.
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#302198) #
Have to say that Jesus Tinoco may be emerging this year too as a 20 year-old in Lansing.
uglyone - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 01:16 PM EDT (#302199) #
yep.

whole bunch of arms that i couldn't argue much against making people's top 10s - tirado labourt tinoco reidfoley borucki perdomo etc.
ogator - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 01:28 PM EDT (#302200) #
So maybe drafting a position player or even two might not hurt.
jerjapan - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 01:46 PM EDT (#302205) #
I love AA's drafts and the pitching-heavy approach, but for some completely irrational reason, I really do want to see us draft at least one legit slugger type.

AA's listening jerjapan Carl Wise in the 4th round
jerjapan - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 04:45 PM EDT (#302229) #
Holy, that worked well. Now I'm hoping AA drafts a SS with power potential and a front-line starter.
JB21 - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 06:14 PM EDT (#302240) #
can you ask him to trade for Cueto too?
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 09 2015 @ 09:04 PM EDT (#302259) #
Matt Boyd is doing it again for New Hampshire, throwing a two-hitter through 7.  The man needs a challenge.
Charlie - Wednesday, June 10 2015 @ 12:42 PM EDT (#302316) #
It's worth remembering how long and winding the player development curve can be. Taking the examples of successful development projects mentioned earlier - Bautista, Encarnacion, Donaldson, Martin, Gomes - the only one whose trajectory has been somewhat linear is Martin. Between finding your position (Encarnacion, Donaldson), finding your swing (Bautista, Donaldson), finding a team with an open spot (Bautista, Gomes), and staying healthy it can take a long time for talent to blossom. With players like Lawrie and Snider, I think we can be pretty sure they won't become all-star bats but history suggests it's a possibility.
