Matt Boyd almost pitched a complete game shutout, he left in the ninth with a three hitter. New Hampshire won 1-0, a triple from Shane Opitz was the big hit. Daniel Norris pitched in and out of trouble while conceding three runs. Clayton Richard shut down the Bisons. Justin Shafer blew a three run lead and Dunedin lost in the ninth. Shane Dawson had a bad start for Lansing.

Buffalo 0 Indianapolis 3

Daniel Norris made the start and as I generally say he had a "Norrisy" start. Namely he struck out eight hitters in seven innings while giving up three runs and also showing periods of dominance. In the first inning Norris was nibbled to death, a lead off walk was followed by two bunt singles. leaving the bases loaded with no outs. Norris got a pop out and a strikeout and then struck-out Tony Sanchez. But the ball got away, Sanchez made it to first and a run scored. In the second Pedro Florimon took Norris deep. After the home run Norris faced just two hitters over the minimum through six inning. Those two hitters doubled to leave off innings but Norris stranded both. In the seventh Florimon doubled off Norris and that was followed by another double. Norris gave up seven hits, two were bunt singles and five were extra base hits, that's an unusual profile. Norris' line was 7 7 3 3 1 8. He threw 97 pitches, 69 for strikes.

Former major leaguer, Clayton Richard kept the Bisons off the board though 7.2 innings. Andy Burns, Dalton Pompey and Sean Ochinko had two hits each.

Bowie 0 New Hampshire 1

Matt Boyd dominated Bowie. He faced the minimum number of hitters through seven innings and he took a two hitter into the ninth inning with a chance for a complete game. with one out Boyd gave up a line drive single and that was it for Boyd. Blake McFarland finished up.

The only run came in the third inning. Shane Opitz tripled with one out and scored on an error. That error was originally scored a hit off the bat of Jorge Flores but changed to an error after the game. The Fisher Cats had five hits in the game.

Clearwater 6 Dunedin 5

Clearwater scored twice before the Jays came to bat. But the Jays battled back to take a 5-2 lead to the ninth. Justin Shafer came on and blew up good. He didn't get an out and was pulled after he let the Phillies tie the game. Alberto Tirado came on and threw away the ball on a play at first and that let the winning run score. Luis Santos pitched well after the first, he went six innings with just the two first innings runs on his record. Chad Girodo shut down the Phillies in the seventh and eighth.

The Jays scored three in the second, Matt Dean tripled, Mitch Nay doubled and Derrick Loveless homered. Dickie Thon tripled in two runs in the fifth. Roemen Fields and Nay had two hits each.

Burlington 6 Lansing 3

Shane Dawson has been Lansing's best reliable starter but on Wednesday he was rocked for six runs in three innings. Rocked might be an exaggeration, five of the six hits he allowed in the third were ground balls, and three of them were infield hits. Add in a couple of errors and Dawson was done. Dusty Isaacs and Tim Mayza each pitched three innings in relief.

DJ Davis drove in Ryan McBroom with the first run. An Anthony Alford sac fly drove in drove in Chris Carlson with the second run in the fifth. Rowdy Tellez drove in the third run with a groundout in the seventh. Tim Locastro led the Lugnuts hitters with three hits.

It's deja vu with Boyd and his dominance of AA this year with respect to how high A went last year for him.

What's interesting is how it appears that recent college pitchers drafted by the Blue Jays have actually turned out decent. Stroman, Hoffman, Boyd, Graveman as opposed to earlier drafts of Jenkins and McGuire.

AA has definitely done well with college pitchers since that 2010 draft with McGuire first.  even after mcguire in 2010 he took sam dyson in the 4th and sean nolin in the 6th as his next 2 college pitchers.

every time i look at his draft record i come away impressed.

I'm getting increasingly stoked on Boyd, who i've always liked as a back end guy but perhaps we are looking at another Hutch type.  Career whip of 1, career K:BB ratio over 4, low 90s fastball that seems to have improved - can't recall who noted he was sitting at 95 recently - he was on the weighted ball program for this first time this off season and had bone chips removed in september.

oh, and he's a distant relative of Bob Feller.  that's gotta count for something.

I agree that the FO has done a good job of acquiring young talent via the Draft/IFA/Trades and I am looking forward to next week's draft even if it's regarded as weak. BTW, after the McGuire selection, Asher Wojciechowski was actually the next college pitcher drafted. .

John Lott's article on Anthony Alford is definitely worth a read

Way past time to move Boyd to AAA - 11 starts, 1.08 ERA 7+ IP in each of his last 4 starts with a 0.92 ERA over those 4.  It is getting silly for him there.  Of course in Buffalo the team ERA is 2.77 so it is hard to demote anyone there.  Andrew Albers is probably doing the worst with a 3.64 ERA in 10 starts.  Norris now has a 3.31 ERA there, Castro 3.09, Wolf 1.93, Felix Doubront 0.82 in 4 starts (22 IP).  Jenkins was 'poor' with a 3.18 ERA.

Gotta be someone there who could help this team right now you'd think.

You called it John, it's the depth at AAA keeping Boyd in AA. Wolf might opt out and that would free some space, but I believe the opt-out became an option on the 1st so perhaps he stays put. Castro and Norris are going to start no matter what, leaving Copeland, Albers, Wolf and Doubront who have all been good to very good. with the big league rotation rounding into form, I expect him to stay put unless we do something crazy like shift Dickey or Sanchez to the pen. Can't move Estrada the way he's been pitching, same for Hutch and Buehrle.

The Jays could lose some pitchers to the Pan-Am games. Boyd could get his shot then.
Mike Green - Thursday, June 04 2015 @ 02:39 PM EDT (#301773) #
You could easily move Albers to the pen and promote Boyd; perhaps Boyd will have to discover his Canadian roots before that happens.

Depends on what promises (if any) were made. Guys like Albers and Wolf were FA signings, as opposed to being waiver claims. Part of the incentive to sign with the Jays may have been the promise of a starting gig in AAA.

The draft starts on Monday. There has already been a few articles on this topic. I am getting excited.

Don't remember seeing Sam on here for quite some time. You still around? Anyone working on a draft thread?

The IFA is more interesting since the Jays have committed to going over the limit this year and have Vlad Jr. firmly in their sights.  Draft can be very interesting too - hopefully AA finds a few gems in later rounds as he has in the past.  The 'unsignable' players are the most fun.  Rowdy Tellez (288/342/452 in  Lansing right now - 30th round), Anthony Alford 305/446/389 in Lansing (3rd round), and the very surprising Graveman.

I hadn't thought of that.  You could shift Castro to the pen for a while too, if needs be.  It is a good idea for Boyd to see some triple A action very soon, so one way or the other, the club ought to make it happen.

Castro is on the DL. Starters now are Wolf, Doubront, Copeland, Norris and Albers.

Bring Doubrount into the pen in TO. Loup has been really poor and we could use another good lefty in the Pen.

Dickey has been getting worse lately (Hutch and Beurhle are better). I wouldn't mind seeing him get a DL stint and a rehab assignment to get it together.

Dickey hasn't been that bad (not particularly good, mind you, but not grotesque) in his three starts since back to back blow-ups in mid May. He doesn't strike me as a problem that's screaming for a minor league free agent solution at this point. Over those last 20 innings he has some really good indicators - he's had 18 Ks against 5 BBs, and a swinging strike rate of 14%.

IFA no longer looks that interesting this year.  Latest reports don't have us connected to anyone of significance apart from Vlad Jr. with regards to the 16-year old market, and with his reported bonus now being lower than originally reported, it appears that we are going to try and acquire some additional cap room through trade in order to stay under the penalty threshold.  We have been mentioned as "interested" in the kid that just defected from Cuba (CF Eddy Martinez), but realistically our interest isn't likely to match up with how much he's going to end up receiving, and Rogers really doesn't appear interested in financing these bidding wars on Cuban talent.

Its looking like our IFA class this year will be Vlad Jr. alone.
