The affiliates were just 1-for-3 on Memorial Day Monday, going 0-2 against Pirate-affiliated clubs. Dunedin had the day off.
Indianapolis 8 Buffalo 4
Buffalo, NY — All the scoring was done in the first four innings. Randy Wolf (3-1, 1.95) was whacked by the Indians for eight runs on seven hits and three walks in 2-2/3 innings. Two of the runs were unearned after an Andy Burns error at third. Wolf struck out two and wound up with a Game Score of just 15. Chad Jenkins stranded a runner and scattered three hits in 2-1/3 innings with one strikeout. Jeff Francis also allowed just three baserunners on two hits and a walk and had three K's over three scoreless frames. Colt Hynes walked one but struck out the side in the ninth.
Burns and Luke Scott had RBI singles while Chris Dickerson had an RBI ground out and a sacrifice fly. Burns was 4-for-5, Scott was 3-for-4 and Dickerson was 2-for-4. Ryan Schimpf doubled and walked while Matt Hague, Munenori Kawasaki and Jonathan Diaz all had singles. Brad Glenn and Munenori Kawasaki both went 0-for-4.
Altoona 9 New Hampshire 4
Manchester, NH — Let's start with an understatement — Taylor Cole (2-5, 5.20) did not pitch very well. His Game Score was only 25 after throwing five innings of five-run ball where he was creamed for 11 hits and two walks by the Pirates affiliate. Two of those runs came on a Stetson Allie home run. Cole struck out two and five of his nine outs in play were on the ground. Scott Barnes and Danny Barnes could not escape the wrath of the Curve either. Scott was stomped on for three runs, all coming on a pair of long balls, over his two innings. He surrendered four hits and struck out three. Danny was dinged for a run on two hits in one inning with one whiff. Greg Burke was the only Fisher Cat hurler to post a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one in the ninth. Another positive, Cole and Scott Barnes managed to pick off runners at first base.
New Hampshire scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and eighth innings on a Christian Lopes ground out, a Daric Barton home run and two Ian Parmley singles. Shane Opitz had a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored. K.C. Hobson also had two doubles and drew a walk. Jorge Flores had two base knocks and Barton walked once to get on base twice. Dwight Smith Jr. had a single in five trips to the dish. Matt Newman walked once in his five plate appearances but Jack Murphy went 0-for-4. Despite 13 hits and three walks, the Fisher Cats were 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Lansing 11 Fort Wayne 5
Lansing, MI — The Lugnuts were down 3-0 to the Padres affiliate before they came up to bat but they overcame that with a four-run first. Rowdy Tellez got Lansing on the board with an RBI double. Richard Urena scampered home with the second run on a Ryan McBroom strikeout when the catcher completed the strikeout with a throw to first. A balk led to Tellez trotting home with the tying run before Gunnar Heidt gave Lansing the lead with an RBI single. A wild pitch and a D.J. Davis sacrifice fly led to two runs in the fifth before Tellez cleared the bases with a three-run double in the sixth. Urena popped a two-run homer, his seventh, to give the Lugnuts double digits in the run column. Urena had three of Lansing's eight hits and one of their nine walks while coming up a triple shy of the cycle. The strangest line of the day belonged to Anthony Alford, who was 0-for-1 with a strikeout but walked four times and scored four times. McBroom had a similar line by going 0-for-2 with two whiffs and three walks. D.J. Davis singled and walked. Justin Atkinson had a hit but Danny Jansen went 0-for-5 and Josh Almonte was 0-for-4 but with a run scored and a stolen base.
Sean Reid-Foley (1-1, 4.45) hung around for five innings to get his first win of the year. He kept the Wizards from working their magic in his last four innings after a three-run first. He allowed four hits and four walks but struck out seven. Reid-Foley threw two wild pitches but five of his six outs in play remained on the diamond. His Game Score was 50. Chase Mallard coughed up two runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout but he got the final 12 outs for the four-inning save. Mallard also induced five ground ball outs and just two in the air.
