Box contributor Eephus, who just happens to have my cellphone number, has sent me a text message. In which he asks a question aimed at Older Fellows like myself.

"Did 1999 Doc Halladay look anything like Aaron Sanchez now?"

What an interesting thing to think about!

My thoughts: Sanchez seems both far more overpowering than young Doc, and far less polished. Even before the famous 2001 rebuild, even when his ERA was over 10.00, Doc never seemed anything near as raw as young Sanchez.  But I don't remember young Doc ever  just blowing hitters away with that raw stuff, either.

Sanchez reminds me a lot of Juan Guzman: Guzman only ever seemed to have a vague concept of where the ball was going to end up, and I don't think his approach ever got more advanced than throwing the ball near the strike zone and hoping the batter got fooled - which, when you have a good fastball and a lethal slider, happens quite a bit.

Halladay had pretty decent control in the minors, though I think it deteriorated due to being pushed so aggressively. Sanchez has never had good command, so I think his ideal upside is similar to Guzman - keep the ball in the general vicinity of the strike zone, and let the stuff do the rest.

Doc pitched a gem against Detroit when he first came up. I do not think it was his debut game. He teased us or at least me, so I was shocked when he got so bad and had to be sent down.

When I think of a guy with good stuff who regularly couldn't control it I think of Ricky Romero.

Gerry, an updates coming soon on the Extended Spring Training prospects?

Nothing soon on extended, I usually wait until it is finishing, around mid-June. The extended players play less than the minor leaguers as they carry a lot of players, so it takes longer for the numbers to paint a picture. I am debating getting some updates on the minor leaguers in full season in the next week or two. Most coaches are non-committal until you hit that 40 game mark.

The name that keeps coming to mind, and maybe this is just because Camden Yards is apparently the only place his Houdini act doesn't work, is Daniel Cabrera.
