The affiliates won just one out of four Tuesday night. Losses for the three second-place teams on the scoreboard were justified because they left a small village on the basepaths.
Buffalo 6 Durham 2
Buffalo, NY At least the Jays are having some success against the Rays at the Triple-A level. The Herd got their second win in a row over the Bulls by overcoming a 2-0 deficit by scoring all of their runs in the fourth inning. Dalton Pompey jump-started the rally with a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a Matt Hague base hit, which extends his hitting streak to 13 games. Brad Glenn followed with a two-run double and he came in to score on a Chris Dickerson single. Dickerson stole second and did not have to wait long to score as Melky Mesa doubled him in to make it 5-2. Pompey capped the rally with an RBI single as the Bisons sent 11 men up to the plate. Hague and Glenn led the way with two hits and A.J. Jimenez singled and walked. Andy Burns was 1-for-4 and Jonathan Diaz had a walk. Only Ryan Schimpf was hitless as he went 0-for-4.
Miguel Castro threw a no-hitter! Actually, he only made it through two-plus innings by alternating three walks with three strikeouts all three outs in play were on the ground. He walked the first two men he faced but Jimenez threw out former Jays farmhand Eugenio Velez trying to steal second. Jimenez was 2-for-3 in throwing out runners trying to steal. As for Castro, he faced just one more hitter in the third inning but Matt Hague butchered a ground ball at first base to allow the leadoff man to reach on an error. Todd Redmond (1-1, 4.50) allowed that unearned run and one run of his own after a two-run double. Redmond allowed three hits and plunked a couple of batters but he settled down to give the Bisons five innings of one-run relief that included three strikeouts. He retired the last eight hitters he faced. Gregory Infante got just one out and loaded the bases with a hit and two walks but Colt Hynes stranded all three runners by getting the final two outs in the eighth inning. Bo Schultz wrapped things up with a one-walk ninth.
New Britain 2 New Hampshire 1
Manchester, NH The Fisher Cats are back to .500 after dropping their second in a row to the Rockies affiliate. A K.C. Hobson ground ball plated the lone run for the Fisher Cats in the second. New Hampshire tried to rally in the ninth when Jack Murphy drew a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Emilio Guerrero eventually made it to third but Jon Berti struck out looking to end the game and a 0-for-5 night at the plate. Matt Newman and Jorge Flores both went 2-for-4. Dwight Smith Jr. and Andy Fermin were 1-for-4. Hobson, Kevin Nolan and Shane Opitz all drew walks but the Fisher Cats were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
Matt Boyd buoyed (SWIDT!) the Fisher Cats' hopes of winning with four scoreless frames before a triple and a two-out error by Fermin at third conspired to produce the tying run. Boyd pitched five innings of four-hit ball with a 7-1 K/BB total to produce a Game Score of 63. His ERA is a dollar and 21 cents. Scott Barnes (0-1) retired the side in the sixth in order despite a couple of lineouts but he plunked the first batter he faced in the seventh and that runner came around to score on a sacrifice bunt and two singles. Blake McFarland put up zeros in the eighth and ninth by allowing just one hit while striking out four.
Fort Myers 4 Dunedin 2
Fort Myers, FL Dunedin scored the first two runs of the game but the Twins affiliate scored off three different pitchers for the win. Jairo Labourt lasted 3-2/3 innings and gave up a run on three hits and a walk while striking out two. Scott Silverstein allowed an inherited run to score and surrendered a run on three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch over 1-2/3 innings with one strikeout. Jimmy Cordero (0-1) stranded a runner for Silverstein but coughed up the tie-breaking runs in the seventh. One run was unearned thanks to his own throwing error. Cordero had an eventful line that included two hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, a balk and a wild pitch with one strikeout in his two-inning outing. Chad Girodo stranded both of Cordero's runners by getting the final two outs of the eighth.
Both Dunedin runs came on consecutive run-scoring singles by Dawel Lugo and Mike Reeves in the second inning. Lugo and Reeves finished 2-for-4 on the evening as did L.B. Dantzler, who also drew a walk. Matt Dean had two hits in five at-bats and Roemon Fields had one. Mitch Nay walked twice but went 0-for-3 to drop his average to .189. Derrick Loveless and Jason Leblebijian worked the count to ball four once. David Harris was 0-for-5 as Dunedin was just 2-for-10 with runners at second and/or third, stranding 12 of them.
South Bend 5 Lansing 3
South Bend, IN Like yesterday, the Lugnuts scored first but that didn't matter to the Cubs as they responded with a run in each of the first three innings against Jesus Tinoco (0-1, 3.52). The Venezuelan only got through 3-2/3 innings and was jolted for seven hits and two walks. He struck out four to wind up with a Game Score of 37. Colton Turner prevented Tinoco's line from taking a savage beating by stranding the bases loaded but was victimized for an unearned marker in the fifth on a Tim Locastro throwing error at second. Turner got through 2-1/3 innings with just a hit and a walk on his line. Mark Biggs worked a one-hit inning but Jose Fernandez was hosed for a run in the eighth on a hit and a walk.
Doubles by Anthony Alford and J.D. Davis produced the first run of the game in the first. Rowdy Tellez doubled home a run in the third but was thrown out at home for the second straight game by the Cubs third baseman on a fielder's choice. The other run came in the ninth on a ground ball double play by Davis, who came up with the bases loaded and nobody out. Alford had two hits and a walk and the 7-8-9 hitters - Danny Jansen, Boomer Collins and Justin Atkinson - also gained membership in the two-hit club. Locastro reached twice with a hit and a hit by pitch (what else is new?). Ryan McBroom (.304) had a hit but Gunnar Heidt was 0-for-4 with a pair of whiffs. The Lugnuts were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on the pillows.
