The affiliates won just one out of four Tuesday night. Losses for the three second-place teams on the scoreboard were justified because they left a small village on the basepaths.

Buffalo 6 Durham 2

Buffalo, NY
— At least the Jays are having some success against the Rays at the Triple-A level. The Herd got their second win in a row over the Bulls by overcoming a 2-0 deficit by scoring all of their runs in the fourth inning. Dalton Pompey jump-started the rally with a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a Matt Hague base hit, which extends his hitting streak to 13 games. Brad Glenn followed with a two-run double and he came in to score on a Chris Dickerson single. Dickerson stole second and did not have to wait long to score as Melky Mesa doubled him in to make it 5-2. Pompey capped the rally with an RBI single as the Bisons sent 11 men up to the plate. Hague and Glenn led the way with two hits and A.J. Jimenez singled and walked. Andy Burns was 1-for-4 and Jonathan Diaz had a walk. Only Ryan Schimpf was hitless as he went 0-for-4.

Miguel Castro
threw a no-hitter! Actually, he only made it through two-plus innings by alternating three walks with three strikeouts all three outs in play were on the ground. He walked the first two men he faced but Jimenez threw out former Jays farmhand Eugenio Velez trying to steal second. Jimenez was 2-for-3 in throwing out runners trying to steal. As for Castro, he faced just one more hitter in the third inning but Matt Hague butchered a ground ball at first base to allow the leadoff man to reach on an error. Todd Redmond (1-1, 4.50) allowed that unearned run and one run of his own after a two-run double. Redmond allowed three hits and plunked a couple of batters but he settled down to give the Bisons five innings of one-run relief that included three strikeouts. He retired the last eight hitters he faced. Gregory Infante got just one out and loaded the bases with a hit and two walks but Colt Hynes stranded all three runners by getting the final two outs in the eighth inning. Bo Schultz wrapped things up with a one-walk ninth.

New Britain 2 New Hampshire 1

Manchester, NH
— The Fisher Cats are back to .500 after dropping their second in a row to the Rockies affiliate. A K.C. Hobson ground ball plated the lone run for the Fisher Cats in the second. New Hampshire tried to rally in the ninth when Jack Murphy drew a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Emilio Guerrero eventually made it to third but Jon Berti struck out looking to end the game and a 0-for-5 night at the plate. Matt Newman and Jorge Flores both went 2-for-4. Dwight Smith Jr. and Andy Fermin were 1-for-4. Hobson, Kevin Nolan and Shane Opitz all drew walks but the Fisher Cats were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

Matt Boyd buoyed (SWIDT!) the Fisher Cats' hopes of winning with four scoreless frames before a triple and a two-out error by Fermin at third conspired to produce the tying run. Boyd pitched five innings of four-hit ball with a 7-1 K/BB total to produce a Game Score of 63. His ERA is a dollar and 21 cents. Scott Barnes (0-1) retired the side in the sixth in order despite a couple of lineouts but he plunked the first batter he faced in the seventh and that runner came around to score on a sacrifice bunt and two singles. Blake McFarland put up zeros in the eighth and ninth by allowing just one hit while striking out four.

Fort Myers 4 Dunedin 2

Fort Myers, FL
— Dunedin scored the first two runs of the game but the Twins affiliate scored off three different pitchers for the win. Jairo Labourt lasted 3-2/3 innings and gave up a run on three hits and a walk while striking out two. Scott Silverstein allowed an inherited run to score and surrendered a run on three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch over 1-2/3 innings with one strikeout. Jimmy Cordero (0-1) stranded a runner for Silverstein but coughed up the tie-breaking runs in the seventh. One run was unearned thanks to his own throwing error. Cordero had an eventful line that included two hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, a balk and a wild pitch with one strikeout in his two-inning outing. Chad Girodo stranded both of Cordero's runners by getting the final two outs of the eighth.

Both Dunedin runs came on consecutive run-scoring singles by Dawel Lugo and Mike Reeves in the second inning. Lugo and Reeves finished 2-for-4 on the evening as did L.B. Dantzler, who also drew a walk. Matt Dean had two hits in five at-bats and Roemon Fields had one. Mitch Nay walked twice but went 0-for-3 to drop his average to .189. Derrick Loveless and Jason Leblebijian worked the count to ball four once. David Harris was 0-for-5 as Dunedin was just 2-for-10 with runners at second and/or third, stranding 12 of them.

South Bend 5 Lansing 3

South Bend, IN
— Like yesterday, the Lugnuts scored first but that didn't matter to the Cubs as they responded with a run in each of the first three innings against Jesus Tinoco (0-1, 3.52). The Venezuelan only got through 3-2/3 innings and was jolted for seven hits and two walks. He struck out four to wind up with a Game Score of 37. Colton Turner prevented Tinoco's line from taking a savage beating by stranding the bases loaded but was victimized for an unearned marker in the fifth on a Tim Locastro throwing error at second. Turner got through 2-1/3 innings with just a hit and a walk on his line. Mark Biggs worked a one-hit inning but Jose Fernandez was hosed for a run in the eighth on a hit and a walk.

Doubles by Anthony Alford and J.D. Davis produced the first run of the game in the first. Rowdy Tellez doubled home a run in the third but was thrown out at home for the second straight game by the Cubs third baseman on a fielder's choice. The other run came in the ninth on a ground ball double play by Davis, who came up with the bases loaded and nobody out. Alford had two hits and a walk and the 7-8-9 hitters - Danny Jansen, Boomer Collins and Justin Atkinson - also gained membership in the two-hit club. Locastro reached twice with a hit and a hit by pitch (what else is new?). Ryan McBroom (.304) had a hit but Gunnar Heidt was 0-for-4 with a pair of whiffs. The Lugnuts were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on the pillows.

Some pictures of the renovation project at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver

It all began with some piles of dirt earlier this year.

Metal bleachers for the left field porch are up.

A look at the left field porch from inside the stadium.

More seats are being put in down the third base side.

The children's play area will be situated on the first base side instead.

Boyd's been great.  I know there's been talk of him in the pen later this season.  Does anyone else wonder if he could hold down the 5 spot in the rotation if Norris still needs work?  I'd certainly like to see him in Buffalo on the Kendall Graveman path to see if he can't sustain his momentum against AAAA vets.

Indeed, and let's hear it for the Harlan County boys. No, it wasn't Dickensian like The Wire or Shakespearean like Breaking Bad (and by the way - as great as Dickens was, Shakespeare was greater) - but it was Leonardian! Not high art, perhaps - but really good, really smart, and really fun. I already miss wondering what Boyd's hair is going to look like next time I see him.

Are you trying to rile me up, Mags?  In the spirit of compromise, how about this instead- "Dickens (and the Wire) and Shakespeare (and Breaking Bad) are great in their own ways- each has their supporters and picking between them is mostly a matter of preference".  But I am right with you about Elmore Leonard.  If you'll allow another analogy, Dickens is like fine red wine, Shakespeare is like one of mylegacy's best bottles of single malt and Leonard is that really great beer on a hot day.

In 2013, Boyd did well in low A ball and struggled some in Dunedin.  In 2014, he killed it in Dunedin and struggled in New Hampshire (although his ERA makes things look worse then they were).  In 2015, he's mastered double A.  It is the biggest leap, but you definitely want him to have a shot at triple A.

My favourite line ever, after an unarmed Raylan tells a gun-wielding Boyd that he's taking him into the police station:

Boyd: Are you asking -- or are you tellin?

Raylan: If it makes you feel better, you can tell people I asked.

Justified definitely managed to fly under the radar save for a few devoted fans and an army of critics. The Leonardian dialogue was terrific (if perhaps a little too self-referential in the final season) and while not that rare case of high art, perhaps, art enough for this particular viewer.

Oh, and if the rest of you want to talk about baseball, I guess that's okay too.

Thanks Chuck, don't mind if I do.

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on a random thought - would Melky Cabrera (sans PED's) be Dwight Smith's best case scenario?

Just off the top of my head, is chocolate milk a nice nickname for Melky Mesa ?

Thx for the pics of Nat Bailey JB. I see that they moved the fences in for 2015 from 335 to 320 (down the line), great move IMO, not many HR's were hit here. Hopefully it will spark a little more power for the players and a little more entertainment for the fans.

though melky was more advanced at the same age. at 21 he was killing AAA and called up to the bigs. smith is 22 in AA. and melky was a dscent defensive cf back then.

but what melky became in the end might still be a solid upside comp for smith.

Years ago, David Smith - the Jays' prospect in Syracuse - had not been resigned and a fan argue for him. Those were the last days for JPR. Will Brad Glenn future rise or call-up to Rogers Stadium a comp for this younger Dwight Smith ?

A little. In the cold light of day, I really wouldn't want to choose between, say, season 4 of The Wire and the final season of Breaking Bad. But I vividly recall thinking while watching the final half dozen episodes of the Walter White saga that "this is the best thing that has ever been on television. Ever."

Best Justified line? I liked when Raylan knocked Wynn Duffy on his butt, flicked a bullet cartridge onto his chest and said "Next one's coming faster."
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 13 2015 @ 03:50 PM EDT (#300742) #
Hypobole, I always hesitate to suggest best case scenarios for a player like Smith.  He's obviously got advanced control of the strike zone, and can play a good defensive left-field.  The question is whether he will add more power as he reaches his mid-20s.  Smith already has some power, and whether he will add no power, a little or a lot as he gets older is pretty much a mystery.  Maybe Smith will drop a clue for us by the end of the year.

Funny that.  I remember watching season 4 of The Wire and thinking, "this is the best television program I have ever seen.  ever".  I also compared it to best movies I had seen and ultimately decided that the size of the canvas made them incomparable.

Season 3 for me. The second last episode was Shakespeareanesque.

Tremι is another David Simon series that I really enjoyed, I'd recommend to any Wire fans out there.

So the Jays signed Luke Scott to a minor league deal.

There are players I would like them to sign LESS than Scott... but not many.

And we have come full circle. Luke Scott would not be out of place in Harlan County.

If Scott could put up his career average line right now, he would be a very nice addition to the current righty-heavy Jays lineup.

How likely is that?  Not, but worth a flyer to find out?  Why not?

Ryan Day - Thursday, May 14 2015 @ 11:54 AM EDT (#300783) #
The Jays are already pretty bogged down in 1b/DH types, between Edwin, Smoak, and however many players can't take the field on any given day. Scott has the advantage of being left-handed, but the disadvantage of not having played in the majors for a year and being 37. I think he's probably AAA depth, unless something bizarre happens to the roster.

I have nothing of substance to add, other than to express my deep regard for Justified.  I was a few weeks behind and so only finished the series last night; as intrigued as I was by the article I didn't read it until now for fear of spoilers.  A real gem of a show, with everyone involved on-screen and off working at a consistently high level.  It's amazing to think that Boyd was supposed to die in the pilot, and what the show would have looked like had that happened.

I remember seeing Boyd show up in the 2nd episode and thinking "Wait, isn't he dead?"

Good company, though: Vince Gilligan initially planned to kill of Jesse Pinkman in season 1, and David Simon wanted to kill Omar in the first season.

Rowdy seems to be a very legit hitter. I foresee Rowdy taking over for EE in a couple years, likewise with Alford for Bautista but Alford won't have the same power. My ideal world.
