It was a 2-2 Tuesday on the farm but it could've been 3-1 had one of the affiliates not been shutout for a second straight game.
Norfolk 1 Buffalo 0
Buffalo, NY — The Orioles affiliate snapped a 0-0 tie by scoring the winning run with two outs in the ninth. Ryan Tepera (1-1) gave up a one-out single to Paul Janish and advanced him to second with a wild pitch. He struck out former Jay Nolan Reimold for a second out but failed to handle a hot smash from Christian Walker and was charged with an error to put runners on the corners. Colt Hynes could not bail Tepera out as he allowed an RBI single to Chris Parmalee. Hynes did get the next batter to fly out. This overshadowed a great start by Randy Wolf, who worked around six hits and three walks to pitch seven scoreless innings. He struck out five and induced ten groundball outs. Luis Perez started the eighth and left two base hits with just one out but Tepera stranded the runners with a popup and a strikeout.
Andy Wilkins and Ezequiel Carrera had two hits apiece. Andy Burns had the only extra-base knock with a double. Brad Glenn and Munenori Kawasaki also singled. Chris Colabello — who hit into a rally-killing ground ball double play in the ninth — and A.J. Jimenez managed to draw the only walks.
New Hampshire 7 Trenton 5
Manchester, NH — The Fisher Cats fought back from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the third. Matt Newman smoked a high fastball to right field for a two-run homer and Jake Fox followed with a two-run double. The other big swing came from Melky Mesa, who homered to left-center with two outs in the sixth to snap a 5-5 tie. The other two runs scored on wild pitches. Mesa and Jon Berti had three-hit games while Kevin Nolan tripled and Dwight Smith Jr. singled. Jack Murphy added two walks.
Michael Lee lasted six innings and was scored upon three times in the first and twice more in the sixth. Yankee prospects Greg Bird and Eric Jagielo took Lee deep as part of a nine-hit attack by the Thunder. Lee hit a batter, struck out two and collected nine groundball outs. Greg Burke (2-0) pitched a one-hit seventh with two strikeouts and Matt West struck out two over two shutout frames for his first save in the Jays organization.
Daytona 9 Dunedin 1
Dunedin, FL — The Reds affiliate put up a converted touchdown to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Luis Santos (0-3) was charged with the first three runs of the frame and Jimmy Cordero coughed up the other four. In total, Santos surrendered four runs on four hits, two walks and a hit by pitch over five-plus frames. He and Cordero both gave up a home run. Cordero lasted just one inning in which he gave up two more hits and a walk. Alberto Tirado settled things down with two strikeouts in a clean seventh and Alonzo Gonzalez survived two hits and a walk in a scoreless eighth. Brady Dragmire was nicked for a run in the ninth on three hits.
Dunedin's only run came on an Emilio Guerrero single that scored a David Harris double to tie the game in the fourth. Harris had Dunedin's only two-hit performance and Mitch Nay reached twice with a single and a walk. Matt Dean had the other hit. Derrick Loveless walked twice.
Lansing 3 Lake County 1
Lansing, MI — The Lugnuts won their 13th game in 19 tries with a victory over the Indians affiliate. A Tim Locastro fielder's choice and a passed ball gave the Lugnuts two runs in the fourth. Anthony Alford doubled home Locastro with an insurance run in the seventh. Alford, Richard Urena and Gunnar Heidt all put up a two in the hit column with Heidt also drawing a walk. Locastro got aboard twice with a walk and a hit by pitch (surprising, I know!). D.J. Davis and Dan Jansen walked once and Dickie Joe Thon took one for the team. Ryan McBroom and Rowdy Tellez were a combined 0-for-8.
Conner Greene (2-1) gave up just a solo home run over five innings among five hits. He struck out four and six of his seven outs in play were on the grass. Chase Mallard took care of things the rest of the way with a four-inning save, shutting out the Captains on one hit and one walk while striking out two. Five of his nine outs in play did not escape the infield.
