Daniel Norris recorded 17 outs and 13 of them were strikeouts. He dominated the Iron Pigs while the Bisons bats scored seven. New Hampshire scored seven too but they lost as Casey Lawrence had his second straight tough start against Akron. Ben White and Miguel Castro led Dunedin and Lansing to wins. Matt Smoral and Ryan Borucki combined on a three hit shutout for Vancouver. Bluefield also won while the GCL Jays were rained out.

Buffalo 7 Lehigh Valley 1

Daniel Norris cut through the Iron Pigs like a welding torch. Norris allowed three hits in 5.2 innings, one of them a triple that scored the only run off him. Eight of the K's were swinging, plus a ninth on a foul tip, four were looking for 13 total. Norris was pulled after 85 pitches.

The Bisones had 12 hits, three led to three runs in the third inning. Four led to 4 runs in the eighth. The only home run was a two run shot from Ryan Schimpf. Schimpf was one of five hitters with two hits. Kevin Pillar was not one of them as his hit streak ended.

Akron 9 New Hampshire 7

Akron had a 6-0 lead and New Hampshire were always behind in trying to catch up. Casey Lawrence had his second bad start in a row against Akron who scored seven off Casey in consecutive starts.

The Fisher Cats outhit Akron 13-12. Derrick Chung led the way with three hits including two doubles. Jon Berti, Melky Mesa and Kevin Nolan each had two hits.

Brevard County 1 Dunedin 4

Ben White was outstanding, a two hitter over seven innings. Danny Barnes and Arik Sikula finished up. Barnes is just back after six weeks on the DL.

Shane Opitz was in the middle of the early scoring. He scored the first run on a Dwight Smith single. Later he had an RBI triple and scored the third run. Nick Baligod also had two hits including a solo home run.

Lansing 6 South Bend 3

A five run third inning was the key for the Lugnuts. Five hits and two walks generated the five runs. Lansing had eight hits, distributed through the lineup. Mitch Nay was the only hitter with two.

Miguel Castro pitched six strong innings with just a little wildness. On the positive side Castro only gave up two hits and recorded 8 K's. He also walked four and had a couple of wild pitches. Joe Lovecchio pitched two shutout innings in his first Lugnut appearance.

Everett 0 Vancouver 4

Pitching was the name of the game. Matt Smoral had a shaky first appearance for Vancouver but on Friday we was excellent. Smoral pitched five innings, one hit, two walks, four K's. Smoral was followed by Ryan Borucki who pitched four shutout innings. Borucki conceded two hits, no walks and 3 K's. Combined the two pitchers pitched a three hitter with 7 K's.

Vancouver scored a run in the fifth, Gunnar Heidt doubled and Mike Reeves singled him home. The Canadians scored three more in the sxth helped by a couple of hit batters and an error. Roemen Fields and Ryan McBroom had singles.

Bluefield 4 Princeton 1

Richard Urena scored two runs. He singled to lead off the game and later scored on a wild pitch. He walked in the sixth, after Kevin Garcia singled. Austin Davis drove in a run, Urena scored on a DP, and the third run in that inning came on a Lane Thomas single.

Joey Aquino went five innings and gave up the one run. Jordan Romano, from Markham Ontario, pitched 2.2 shutout innings.

38 batters faced, 23 strikeouts, 1 walk. You could do worse.

Norris doesn't have to be on the 40 man roster until after 2015 season (2011 HS pick), so unless the jays are in a playoff race (unlikely) I hope the team doesn't rush him up in Sept. to buy some PR at the expense of a roster spot.

Maybe this is the wrong thread to voice this concept.
You cannot or should not hold back prospects that seem ready. Speaking only of pitching...Nolin, Norris, Graveman & Sanchez have convinced me that they need roles with the Jays in 2015. How early in 2015? And what do you do with the depth accumulated in the off season? These roles can be more important depending on results. Poor results can hurt the big team in reaching 92 wins or about in 2015. Of course veterans not contributing enough will do the same thing. All the above also applies to C Jenkins.

Ryan Schimpf has now hit 24 home runs at AA and AAA combined. He is 26 with a really low batting average and a respectable OBP. Not being able to hit for average in AAA does not bode well for Major League success but there have been players with power and walks and low batting averages who have had Major League time. Maybe he is a guy who would succeed in Japan but the Jays do not have many minor league hitters with home run power.

bpoz - perfect place to discuss.

With pitchers the general rule is their next surgery is always just a pitch away so the minute they are ready you get them up and make sure as many of those quality pitchers are in the major leagues.

There are a couple of questions with Norris (and to a lesser degree Graveman).
  1. Can he help the Jays more than the 12 guys currently pitching here? If not, will he gain a lot by sitting on the ML bench and getting into a couple of mop up situations?  If this is a 'no' then the other questions don't matter.

  2. How crowded is the 40 man roster this winter? Is it overflowing with quality or is it full of easily replaced guys?  If you only have 35 you want to keep then there is more than enough room for Norris even if you didn't have to put him there now.  The current 40 man has 4 soon to be free agents (Rasmus, Cabrera, Janssen, Morrow since I cannot imagine that option being picked up), cuttable guys in Mastroianni, Hynes, Neil Wagner (on DL for surgery so not sure if he can be cut), Maicer Izturis (if the Jays want to admit it was a wasted effort with him), Dan Johnson, Rob Rasmussen (seems like a filler guy, not a future star).  Maybe with Kyle Drabek (if the Jays are just sick of waiting).  So from the 40 (it is just 40 including DL guys right now) you have 4 slots open due to free agency, 6 more who I could see being cut with no real effect on the team, and 1 more who I could imagine being let go depending on how close to the end the Jays are with him.  I think pretty much anyone who needed to be added this winter already is on the 40 man due to call ups but could be wrong - anyone know for sure?  But right now I don't see any roster crunch coming.

  3. What is your timetable for him? If you think he will make it and stick then burning an option in 2015 won't matter (if called up then he is on the 40 man, then if sent down in spring an option would need to be used that otherwise wouldn't).  Nolan is hitting the nervous point as this year is his 2nd option used up leaving just one more I think.  Of course, if he isn't ready to stick in 2016 is he really that valuable after a couple years in AAA?  Same question for Norris - he is entering his age 22 season next year, if called up this year he'll most likely burn an option each of ages 22/23/24 and have to stay at age 25, if he cannot stick in the majors after 3 more years in AAA is he really as good a prospect as we think?
Those are the key questions for AA to ask himself.  The more I look at it the more value I see in giving Norris a call-up for September to give him his first exposure to the majors and get that nervousness out of his system so he can prep himself for a battle for the last rotation slot in the spring.  I know for sure I'd be calling up Nolin as he had just that one game and if he is going to be of use you need to get him fully broken into the majors even if just in a relief mop up role in September.  Graveman I'd be keeping down for 2014 and then start burning options next year if he proves himself again in AAA (low K makes me nervous but really hope he makes it).

There is a write up over on minorleagueball about the start Norris just had. From the scouting report the guy can pith, but the change up needs work.

Gunnar Heidt has passed the Northwest League test (.375/.444/.583 with 9 XBH and 6 strikeouts); he is ready for new challenges. Christian Lopes hasn't had a bad year in Dunedin for a 21 year old, and is still something of a prospect.

Using the Oliver projection system on FanGraphs, Ryan Schimpf's MLB numbers for 2015 would be .190/.288/.375. He's actually progressed further through the system than I might have expected, but looks like he's probably reached his ceiling in AAA.

There were some happy endings in the minor leagues tonight too.  Rowdy Tellez with the game-winning blast for Bluefield. Buffalo only 2.5 games out of a wild-card berth- Pillar had 3 hits, while Kottaras drove in 4.
