The affiliates were 3-3 today with a bunch of strong hitting and starting pitching performances. DJ Davis helped Lansing, and Jon Berti helped New Hampshire with walk off hits, leading their team to victory.

Tercet is out of country but still prepared this MLU. I am posting it for him.

Buffalo 2 - Pawtucket 3

PJ Walters was solid allowing 3 earned runs over 6 innings, and Aaron Sanchez had a scoreless 7th inning in his second relief appearance for Buffalo. Kevin Pillar had 3 of Bisons 4 hits, which included him scoring 2 runs with a double and his 4th HR.

Here's a nice HRS (home run saved) from Pillar on Friday night.

I believe that today is the last day of the NWL 1st half.
Spokane & Vancouver are tied for 1st. One of them will be declared the 1st half winner depending on today's results. M Castro is starting for Vancouver. I compared both teams overall pitching & hitting stats ie runs for & against. They looked even to me, except that Spokane has a lot more HRs but we have much more SBs.

Go Canadians!!!

GO CANADIANS INDEED!
If the Canadians do win, expect a few call ups to Lansing right away. Like Penetcost, Barreto and Castro.

Gunnar Heidt made his debut today in the GCL. Hopefully, as a 21 year old, he will be moved up quickly.

If anyone gets from the East Coast ever gets a chance to come out West in the Summer I highly recommend taking in a Canadians game at Nat Bailey Stadium. It's an unreal atmosphere and the majority of games are sold out. Sell out capacity is roughly 5,300. And next season they're expanding seating to the outfield, a la Boston. Should be an amazing upgrade!

Also, if anyone listens to Jim Rome, he's got a wonderful take on Colby Lewis' comments about Colby Rasmus. It's pretty funny.

The C's have to finish ahead of Spokane to win the first-half title because of head-to-head record.  A win today would be half the battle.

This is only the 2nd time in 8 starts that castro has given up more than 1 run in a start this year. He's given up 2 runs today.

Castro has had one inexplicably horrendous start this year.

JUN 25: 3.1ip, 3ht, 6er, 4bb, 6k (1.5k/bb, 2.10whip, 16.21era)

In his other 7 starts, including his one going on right now

Rest: 35.0ip, 26ht, 5er, 10bb, 34k (3.4k/bb, 1.03whip, 1.29era)

It's now 9-2 for the C's.  25-13 would be a helluva first half even if they don't end up with the crown.

In Dunedin's shutout this morning, Taylor Cole had 12 Ks while Dwight Smith Jr. homered for the second straight day.  Smith is still a fine prospect- he's hitting .288/.362/.437 as a 21 year old in the FSL with a fine 44/53 W/K rate.  He's stolen 12 bases in 16 tries and has enough speed to play centerfield.

19-year-old RF Wuilmer Becerra, the high-upside third player traded by the Jays for Dickey, is having a nice month, hitting 326/396/581 for the Kingsport Mets in the Appy League. Becerra's development was delayed by a pitch in 2012 that hit him in the face, fracturing his jaw and ending his season. He's had a nice breakthrough 2014 so far, hitting 307/354/520 (albeit in only 82 PA).

The Dickey trade is going to be interesting to analyze as times goes by.  The Jays have had a year and a half so far of solid performance (around a $10 mil a year pitcher... 100 ERA+, leading league in games started both years so far) and have another year and a bit left plus an optional year after that at reasonable rates.

d'Arnaud has been hot lately, up to an 85 OPS+ now (180/271/273 through June 6th, back up on the 24th and hit 297/333/486 since in 78 PA).
Syndergaard has an ugly 5.74 ERA so far, but that is in Vegas and his other figures are decent - 1.1 HR/9 2.8 BB/9 9.2 K/9 as a 21 year old in AAA. If the Mets are dumb enough to send him back I'd take him in a moment.
Becerra in just 82 PA has hit very well this year 307/354/520 but that is the Appy league (rookie) and about as far from the majors as it gets while still being a pro.  As a RF he will need to hit that well or better throughout the minors to make it.

As to the catchers involved in the trade, the less said the better (Thole & Nickeas to the Jays, Buck to the Mets).

At the moment the Jays are 'winners' as Dickey has been more valuable than d'Arnaud so far. But d'Arnaud is showing signs at last of being the guy we all dreamed of for years while Syndergaard could still be a stud. If the Jays make the playoffs this year it is worth it, but if not it could look bad by September (if d'Arnaud keeps it up) and very bad as soon as 2015 (d'Arnaud & Syndergaard).

In Dickey's case, ERA+ isn't the best marker because he gives up more unearned runs than other pitchers.  RA+ will do that.  He's been a 2 WAR pitcher at $10 million per year.  The surplus value on that is roughly $4 million so far.  D'Arnaud might pass him by the end of the year.  The Mets might even finish with a better record than the Blue Jays in 2014...
