Franklin Barreto had four hits, scored three runs and rove in three to lead Vancouver to a win. Andy Burns, Dalton Pompey and KC Hobson homered to pace New Hampshire to a win. Dunedin also won while the GCL Jays split a doubleheader. Buffalo, Lansing, and Bluefield lost.

Buffalo 3 Pawtucket 4

Buffalo had a 3-1 lead but Esmil Rogers allowed a run in the fifth and the sixth to tie the game and then Steve Delabar gave up a home run in the seventh to take the loss. Rogers went six and gave up three runs on six hits. Delabar allowed two hits and two walks in two innings.

The Bisons had just four hits, Ryan Schimpf hit a solo home run. Jared Goedert had an RBI double and scored a run.

Portland 4 New Hampshire 7

New Hampshire scored four runs in the first then tacked on a run in the second, third and fourth innings. The first inning featured an RBI double by Kevin Nolan, an RBI single by Andy Burns and a two run home run from KC Hobson. Dalton Pompey and Burns added solo home runs. Burns, Jon Berti and Mike Crouse led the hitters with two each. Burns now has his BA up to .250.

Matt Boyd was the beneficiary of the runs and he gave up three in six innings.

Jupiter 3 Dunedin 5

A 3 run sixth turned a 3-2 deficit into a win. Gustavo Pierre doubled in a run and Christian Lopes second homer of the year brought in two runs. Lopes, Pierre and Emilio Guerrero each had two hits.

Jesse Hernandez went six innings for the win. Efrain Nieves and Arik Sikula closed it out.

Kane County 10 Lansing 1

This was ugly with a capital U. Kane County had eighteen hits and the Lugnuts didn't get a hit until the fifth. Chase De Jong gave up seven including a pair of homers. Adaric Kelly added gasoline to the fire.

Dawel Lugo doubled in the Lugnuts only run.

Eugene 3 Vancouver 11

Fourteen hits for the C's. Franklin Barreto was 4-5 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Tim Locastro had three hits and Max Pentecost was 2-4. Ryan McBroom drove in 4 runs.

Starlyn Suriel wasn't great but he hung around for five innings to get the win. Three relievers only gave up two hits between them.

Greeneville 7 Bluefield 5

The Jays made four errors including three consecutive errors in the fifth leading to three unearned runs. Carlos Ramirez was the victim of the errors. Joe Aquino made the start and he went four, with two runs scored off him.

Rowdy Tellez doubled twice and raised his average to .200. Gabriel Cenas had three hits.

GCL Jays 3 GCL Yankees 1 - game 1

Angel Perdomo continues to put up good numbers. He pitched five innings of one run ball lowering his ERA to 1.96. Perdomo is 20 years old so he is a little older for a GCL prospect pitcher. This season he has 29 K's in 23 innings and a WHIP of just over 1. Mickey Storey pitched the last two innings as he is still rehabbing.

The Juan's had five of the Jays six hits. Juan Kelly was 3-3 while Juan Tejada was 2-3. The Juans have been the offensive leaders on the team this season, both are hitting over .300 and both are 20 years old.

GCL Jays 1 GCL Yankees 5 - game 2

The Jays had good pitching in game one but were the victims of good pitching in game 2. The Jays had just three hits. Bobby Wheatley started and took the loss.

If Syndergaard and d'Arnaud wasn't enough for RA Dickey, looks like Wuilmer Becerra is about to rocket up the Mets Prospect rankings. He's having a great year and may be finally realizing his vast potential. Might be the best player in the trade when all is said and done.

Where is Roberto Osuna? Haven't seen anything on him since his first game back from TJ? Also, haven't seen much from Drabek either lately.....

After a slow start, Pompey seems to be adjusting fast to the AA competition.  Over his past 6 games, Pompey has gotten on base in 10 of his 22 at-bats. This includes 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 3 singles and 3 walks.  And he has a stolen base too.  Pretty good for a 21-year-old in his first crack at the AA level.  Could he be ready for the majors at some point next season?

I don't get how Syndergaard is still such a highly regarded prospect in so many eyes. His year has been atrocious (PCL effect or not).

Becerra has 78 plate appearances this year in rookie ball with a 5% walk rate and a 27% k rate.

That's comparable to a jays "prospect" like Juan Kelly this year.

Burns finally is hitting above league average (101wrc+) and finally better than he did in AA last year (99wrc+). Has a 1.091ops in July.

keep it up, andy.

ChinaFan - yup, looks like Pompey has made the adjustment. .777ops over his last 10 and something like a .318/.400/.681/1.081 ops over his last 6gms.

I expect him to start in AA next year, but that still means he's definitely in the MLB picture as soon as he's hitting well.

Does anyone know what has happened to Jacob Anderson?  He has only appeared in a few games, and then he seems to have disappeared.

Sean Nolin is starting for Dunedin tonight.

Jacob Anderson had knee problems earlier this season. He aggravated his knee after three games and is rehabbing right now. The Jays hope he will be able to play in a few weeks.

John Stilson is also in Florida trying to build back up his shoulder.

I am in Lansing and I asked some more people about Osuna. Everyone says he is doing fine, throwing bullpens and batting practice but I get the feeling from the way people tell me he is fine that I am not getting the full truth. Osuna pitched in the GCL on July 8th and hasn't pitched since. My guess would be he had some slight discomfort and the Jays decided to back him off and slow things down. I don't believe anything is serious but I do think there is something there.

could be bone chips with Osuna. That sometimes happens after TJ and is painful though not harmful. If so, might have to scope them out in off season.

I don't get how Syndergaard is still such a highly regarded prospect in so many eyes

He throws crazy hard with good command, and while he hasn't done well in the PCL, he's dominated everywhere else and is still only 21. He's probably a very good reliever, if he can't make it as a starter.

You may not think he's that great a prospect, but it's pretty easy to see why some rate him highly.

Daniel Norris took it on the chin in New Hampshire tonight, but it looks like growing pains to me (3 innings, 8 hits, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts).  In the Appy League, Matt Smoral has a 2 hitter through 5 innings with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts.
mendocino - Saturday, July 19 2014 @ 09:55 PM EDT (#290035) #
Norris was doing fine until a collision with a Portland player while backing up play at home gave up a three run homer to next batter. Next inning took one off the leg and another off the hand trying to block it was gone after that
Mike Green - Saturday, July 19 2014 @ 09:57 PM EDT (#290037) #
Thanks, mendocino.  I had no idea that "took one on the chin" was a particularly poor choice of words for Norris' outing.
finch - Saturday, July 19 2014 @ 10:43 PM EDT (#290039) #
Smoral is the new Norris.
If this is actually the case that is huge for the Jays. Stroman, Sanchez, Osuna, Norris, Castro, Hollon, Hoffman, Smoral, Tirado and Labourt are some great arms to make an elite starting 5 mlb rotation.
Shoeless Joe - Saturday, July 19 2014 @ 11:05 PM EDT (#290040) #
I know he's a long ways off, and I know its only one good game but I now have some high hopes for Smoral.

The system as a whole is looking a lot stronger this year in my opinion. Pentecast, Sanchez, Norris, Pompey, Barretto are all impact prospects and there a bunch of other guys like Urena, Smoral, Castro, Hoffman who are just some more exposure away from getting there.
Lylemcr - Sunday, July 20 2014 @ 02:09 AM EDT (#290042) #
Barretto!  Every other post, he is in the top 3 stars...  Just saying
Mike Green - Sunday, July 20 2014 @ 09:02 AM EDT (#290043) #
To give some perspective on how much better this year has been than last for the minor league system, take Richard Urena and Dawel Lugo.  Lugo was one of the bright spots in 2013 as an 18 year old shortstop in Bluefield.  He hit .297/.317/.469 with decent defence at shortstop.  Urena is not one of the big minor league stories in 2014 but as an 18 year old shortstop in Bluefield is hitting .315/.358/.459 and playing better defence than Lugo.  They are both good prospects, but the combination of better plate control and better defence makes Urena the one to watch, in my view.
