The affiliates took two of out three games Tuesday with a pair of sterling starts turned in. A fourth game was suspended by Mother Nature and will resume today.

Buffalo 4 Louisville 1

Buffalo, NY - Marcus Stroman (2-2) may have pitched his last game in Western New York. All the Duke Blue Devil alumni did was throw a no-hitter over six frames, walking just one batter and striking out 10. That walk came with two out in the first inning. He finished up by retiring the last 16 hitters he faced, striking out the side swinging in the fifth. Stroman threw 70 percent of his 80 pitches for strikes and only one of his seven outs in play escaped the infield. The Reds affiliate managed their only run in the seventh by stringing together three hits against Austin Bibens-Dirkx. Bobby Korecky and Neil Wagner teamed up to set down the last six hitters in order, resulting in Wagner's third save of the year. Bibens-Dirkx struck out one and Korecky struck out two to give the Bisons staff 13 K's on the night.

Buffalo got their bats going in the second inning, grabbing a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Steve Tolleson and Erik Kratz. A Louisville error produced the Herd's third run before a Matt Tuiasosopo sacrifice fly in the eighth capped off the scoring. Tolleson had the only two-hit game for the Bisons while Dan Johnson reached twice with a single and a walk. Darin Mastroianni and Kevin Pillar had a double apiece. Ryan Goins was 0-for-3 with a walk in his first game back at Triple-A. Anthony Gose was 0-for-4.

Trenton 4 New Hampshire 2

Manchester, NH - A step backward for Deck McGuire (3-2). The Georgia Tech hurler was nicked for single runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings by the Yankees affiliate. He pitched 5.1 frames, yielding a homer among his nine hits, walking three and only striking out one. Only three of his 11 outs put into play were on the ground. Southpaw John Anderson stranded a runner for McGuire and struck out four over two scoreless innings. Randy Boone stranded two runners for Anderson in 1.2 shutout frames.

The New Hampshire runs came in the fourth and sixth innings on a Brad Glenn home run and a Mike Crouse RBI single respectively. The Fisher Cats had at least one runner on in the final three innings. Their best opportunity came with runners at second and third with one out in the seventh but Brian Van Kirk was erased at the plate on a Kevin Nolan ground ball to third. Crouse had three hits while Van Kirk and Jon Berti had two. Glenn added a walk with his dinger. Andy Burns had a base on balls.

Dunedin 4 Tampa 1

Tampa, FL - Daniel Norris (3-0) spun five shutout innings of three-hit ball, walking one and striking out five. Justin Jackson surrendered the only run in his 1.2 innings of work and needed the help of lefty Efrain Nieves, who struck out the only batter he faced to strand two runners. Danny Barnes and Arik Sikula retired the final six hitters between them. For Sikula, that was save number nine.

Dwight Smith Jr.
got the ball rolling for Dunedin with a sacrifice fly in the third inning for the game's first run before tripling home a Dalton Pompey triple in the fifth. K.C. Hobson lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh for the Jays final run. Gustavo Pierre enjoyed his second straight three-hit night against the Yankees, scoring a couple of runs. Pompey also got on base three times by hearing ball four twice and getting hit by a pitch. Derrick Chung and Jorge Flores had two hits apiece with Chung getting a double.

Lansing 4 Dayton 2 (Suspended by rain - Bottom 4th)

Dayton, OH - This game will resume tomorrow as part of a doubleheader. The Lugnuts put up a four-spot in the second inning against the Reds affiliate. An error led to the first run before Dawel Lugo's two-run double and a Jorge Saez RBI two-bagger. Saez was thrown out at home plate to end the inning. Saez collected two doubles in his two at-bats while Justin Atkinson also had a 2-for-2 night before the rains came. L.B. Dantzler singled and was hit by a pitch. D.J. Davis was 1-for-3.

Chase De Jong pitched the first three innings and gave up two runs in the second. One of them was unearned after a Jason Leblebijian error at second. The lefty yielded three hits and a walk but struck out five. Fellow lefthander Alonzo Gonzalez gave up a double and wild pitched him to third before rain halted play.

Stroman's game was quite good.  Checking B-R I see 0 line drives to go with 2 flyballs and 1 pop up. 11 strikes swinging vs just 20 looking and just 80 pitches thrown in 6 innings.

His season is impressive so far.  5 starts, 1 or 0 walks in 4 of those.  His K totals were 4-8-9-5-10.  No home runs, no triples and just one double vs 21 singles.  One hit by pitch in his first game. No stolen bases, one caught. 0 ER in 3 of his 5 starts, another just 2 ER and his worst game he allowed 3 ER.  Opponents batting line is 222/280/232 for a 513 OPS or just a bit higher than what Diaz has hit (502 OPS).  So imagine a lineup of 9 Diaz' and you have what the opponents are like vs Stroman.

I went back to the MLU for last April 27, 2013 and I was looking for a Daniel Norris start. He did start that day and pitched well but his ERA after that game was 9.56. Since then he has been outstanding.

As we look at this years crop of Lansing starters remember Daniel Norris of last year. In Lansing they are trying to develop their skills, how they finish is more important than how they start.

The Jays rotation sure has some promise going forward: Stroman, Sanchez, Norris, and Osuna. You would have to believe that one or two of the young starters in Lansing will develop the same type of potential. Realistically, it's doubtful all 4 play with the Jays but it sure does make for a nice trading chip down the road.

It's nice to see Pierre having a hot streak the last 10 games. He's always intrigued me. Hopefully he can have a successful season and continue developing his tools.

Quite a few pitching prospects have been very dominant so far this year. They have started 5 or 6 games. When would the sample size be considered legit, 8 or maybe 10 starts?
I am pushing for promotions, so that they stay challenged. But I do not want a fast trigger finger.

For anyone that did not have the opportunity to read it, here is a piece by The Hardball Times from November profiling Stroman's fastball.

Regardless of your preferrence for his initial role with the big club, it seems pretty clear that Stroman needs to be in Toronto.

Do teams still delays call-ups to address a player's potential super-2 status? Is this still a thing?
Intricated - Wednesday, April 30 2014 @ 12:38 PM EDT (#285537) #
I would expect so.  This recent MLBTR post points out that "to be safe, teams hoping to dodge an extra arbitration payday will want to wait until the calendar flips from May to June to promote the above-listed prospects", with Stromon one of the listed prospects.

I think waiting for the arg clock in itself is a risky move for young pitchers. With the frequency of major injuries occurring to young pitchers these days it is important to get them to the show the second they can contribute.

The talk of promotions got me thinking of the Jays prospects from last winter....
d'Arnaud: now up to 209/303/299 76 OPS+ - doesn't sound like much but drastically better than earlier. After an 0-15 start he has hit 269/356/385. Not superstar level, but solid.
Syndergaard: not enjoying Vegas - 5 starts, 2+ runs allowed in each 5.04 ERA 1.1 HR/9, 3.6 BB/9 7.6 K/9.  Boy am I glad the Jays moved AAA to Buffalo.

Kendall Graveman has been promoted from Lansing to Dunedin to replace Matt Boyd. Shane Dawson and Adaric Kelly have been promoted to Lansing.

Tom Robson had an excellent start tonight, 6 innings, 3 hits, one run. The Lugnuts pitching is coming around.

I understand it will be a lot of work, but can the Batter's Box team do two prospect list (15 prospect size) on full-season teams and one on short-season teams? Full-season is short-term to the majors/trades with short-season being long-term value.
Gerry - Thursday, May 01 2014 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#285597) #
Why not read our end of last season top 30? Those lists won't have changes much with 20 plus games played in the minor league season.

While on the topic of lists, John Sickels published his Top-150 prospect list today and five baby Jays made the cut - Sanchez (29), Stroman (45), Nay (93), Norris (98) and Nolin (127). In the comments John made mention that both Norris and Pompey (NR) could be fast risers in his July list if they sustain their current performances.
John Northey - Thursday, May 01 2014 @ 04:41 PM EDT (#285606) #
In a top 150 with 30 teams the Jays should have 5 (150/30 = 5) so they are doing average on that.  One in top 30 (Sanchez), one in 31-60 (Stroman), none in 61-90, but 2 in 91-120 (Nay & Norris) and one in 121-150 (Nolin).

Good to have 2 more on the edge of making it.  A shame to see Noah Syndergaard as #18, James Paxton #24, d'Arnaud #63,

Funny to see Raul Mondesi (SS) and Delino DeShields (OF) listed.
