The affiliates finished with three wins in five tries Tuesday night with all starting pitching performances rating from awesome to half-decent. The GCL Blue Jays had a doubleheader rained out while Dunedin and Bluefield had the day off.

Buffalo 3 Charlotte 1 (10 Innings)

Charlotte, NC — The Bisons tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh when Sean Ochinko singled home a Eugenio Velez double. Ochinko scored the winning run in the 10th when Ramon Hernandez singled off of former Jays lefty David Purcey. Mike McCoy bunted home another run to score an Anthony Gose base knock. Ochinko was the only Bison to get on base twice as he drew a walk. Kevin Pillar and Jim Negrych both had base hits. Ryan Goins was 0-for-5 and Mauro Gomez was 0-for-4.

Dave Bush held the White Sox affiliate to a single run on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out nine. Mickey Storey pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts. Tommy Hottovy stranded a runner for Storey but walked one in one-third of a frame. Joel Carreno (2-1) bailed out Storey and Hottovy by striking out the only hitter he faced to strand their baserunners to end the ninth. Brad Lincoln struck out one in the 10th to earn his fourth save.

New Britain 3 New Hampshire 1

New Britain, CTMarcus Stroman (4-2) dominated the Twins affiliate with a quality start that featured 13 punchouts in 6 2/3 innings. The Rock Cats made just enough contact, collecting six hits to go along with one walk that resulted in three runs. Stroman threw 99 pitches, 62 for strikes. Dustin Antolin got the final out of the seventh. Ryan Tepera finished up with a scoreless frame that saw him walk one and strike out one.

Brian Van Kirk
spoiled the Rock Cats shutout bid by knocking home a run with a single in the ninth to score a Kevin Nolan base hit. Van Kirk had two base knocks. Brad Glenn and Amadeo Zazueta both doubled. Adam Loewen and Clint Robinson contributed the other hits. Ryan Schimpf heard ball four twice. Jack Murphy struck out three times in going 0-for-4. Andy Burns also went 0-for-4, dropping his average to .136.

Lake County 6 Lansing 2

Eastlake, OH — The Lugnuts scored the first run and last run in this one. A wild pitch plated a Santiago Nessy walk in the second. Kevin Patterson lifted a sacrifice fly to score a Dalton Pompey free pass. Dwight Smith Jr. and Seth Conner had two hits apiece. Patterson and Pompey both had a single and a walk. Chris Hawkins singled and Christian Lopes walked. Emilio Guerrero and Kellen Sweeney both wore the collar in four at-bats.

Ben White (4-5) was one out short of a quality start. He served up a home run but the other two runs on his line were unearned after a Guerrero error at short. The Indians affiliate got to White for seven hits and two walks. He struck out three and his groundball total was eight. Southpaw Efrain Nieves stranded a runner for White but was charged with the other three runs on three hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. He did strike out one.

Vancouver 11 Everett 1

Vancouver, BC Jeremy Gabryszwski! The AquaSox might have fared better just spelling his last name because they sure couldn't hit him. The G-Man improved to 2-0 by handcuffing Everett to just two hits over six scoreless innings. His K-BB total was 3-0 and his groundout/flyout numbers were 8-5. G-Money set down 12 hitters in a row at one point. Matt Johnson could not keep the shutout intact as Everett scored a run on two hits in his one inning that also included a strikeout. Lefthander Bobby Brosnahan finished up with 1 2/3 scoreless frames, scattering two hits and a walk with one K.

The C's kept their first-half playoff hopes alive by beating up the first-place AquaSox with a 17-hit attack. The win puts Vancouver four games back of the Mariners affiliate. Michael Reeves singled home the first run of the game in the third inning and a wild pitch saw another run cross the plate. A Brenden Kalfus sac fly in the sixth scored Ian Parmley, who singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. In the seventh, Andy Fermin singled home a run and Parmley doubled home a pair. Vancouver put it away with five runs in the eighth with a Justin Atkinson groundout, singles by Fermin and Nico Taylor, a Kalfus hit by pitch and a Dickie Thon Jr. single. Parmley and Jordan Leyland put up a three in the hit column. Thon, Reeves and Taylor all had two-hit performances. Reeves got on base four times by adding a couple of walks. L.B. Dantzler had a single and two bases on balls. Kalfus walked twice along with his plunk. Leadoff man Chaz Frank was 0-for-3 in his C's debut before Kalfus pinch-hit for him in the sixth.

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
— Not only did the Jays get the win, they got to go home early. Francisco Rios (2-2) grounded the Orioles to two hits over six shutout innings. He struck out seven and did not walk anybody and his ratio of groundouts to flyouts was an impressive 10-1. Francis Eduardo supplied two scoreless innings of one-hit ball with one whiff.

The bats broke through with two runs in the fifth. Deiferson Barreto hit a ground ball to bring home the first run. Richard Urena plated the other with a single. When does Marcus Stroman get promoted, because he looks ready to be up with Toronto?
TangledUpInBlue - Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 10:08 AM EDT (#275724) #
Promoted to Buffalo or Toronto?

I'm all for quick promotion of pitchers -- they're ticking time bombs anyway so when they look good there's no point wasting it in the minors -- but now that we're out of Las Vegas, doesn't it make sense to move pitchers up one level at a time? Based on his stats, it certainly looks like Stroman's ready for Triple-A, but I'd like to see him have at least a few starts there before calling him up to the majors.

Stroman has pitched very well, but has had a lot of difficulty with runners on.  Perhaps he is not comfortable pitching from the stretch.  Whatever it is, he can work on it in Buffalo any time now.

I'd like to see Stroman going a bit deeper into games. This was the first time he's pitched into the 7th inning; facing more patient MLB hitters, he'd probably be hitting his pitch count in the 5th inning.

But he definitely looks good enough to take his stuff to AAA.

Please don't add stroman to the 40man roster until September at the earliest, no point in rushing him.
Give Nolin another shot before stroman for a SP, they have nearly identical stats at AA.

I followed the game on MILB.com.  Initially, Stroman was un-hittable, and almost all his outs were strikeouts.  Then he kind of lost it, in giving up those runs, before he finished strong with more strikeouts.

I think he has plenty of growing to do before he hits Toronto, and when he has a few games more at AA in which he not only becomes, but remains, dominant throughout the start, he could go up to AAA.

I would fill the Wang slot with Weber or Nolin, or even stretch out Cecil, before bringing up a Stroman.

John Northey - Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 01:15 PM EDT (#275736) #
Agreed on not using up a 40 man slot and option on Stroman (assuming he'd go back down).  Better to use someone like Nolin (who already has an option used up) or one of the many retreads (as currently planned).

Me too. I'd probably give Weber a shot and move Nolin up to Buffalo to take his slot.  Nolin has 12 successful AA starts and could use some more high minors work.

Bluejays sign Hollon for $467,280. Huge discount given his UCL injury. Jim Callis thinks we can sign both Brentz and Tellez which would be huge
Beyonder - Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 06:48 PM EDT (#275774) #
The discount is nice, but how damaged must Hollon be to accept such a low figure? Did we effectively throw away a second round pick in hopes of landing whoever was left over in rounds 10+? Or did the Jays not realise the severity of the injury when they drafted him?

Matt Smoral pitched two innings for the GCL Jays today. Sergio Santos started.

Osuna just got lit up. 10 hits and 7 runs in 1.2ip.

Probably time for TJ surgery.
metafour - Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 08:26 PM EDT (#275787) #
The report is that his stuff is the same; he's just not commanding it like he was before.  Mechanical tinkering?
uglyone - Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 08:28 PM EDT (#275788) #
In good news, Sanchez is back, pitching well, and hitting 98 on the gun. While Nolin is having yet another great start.
Richard S.S. - Thursday, July 04 2013 @ 05:02 AM EDT (#275803) #
Technically Nolin is using an option (he can go up and down like a yo-yo this year on this option). If he's called up to stay this year, he never uses this option, or any other. He hasn't used up this optin yet.
Spifficus - Thursday, July 04 2013 @ 09:01 AM EDT (#275809) #
It's been over 20 days since he was optioned back to AA, so this is now option year 1 no matter what else happens (unless through wackiness there was a grievance that restored that service time).
bpoz - Thursday, July 04 2013 @ 11:04 AM EDT (#275821) #
Initially I thought that the Jays made a bad move in promoting Nolin earlier.
He started the year on the DL, made 3 AA starts the 1st on May 7th, 3.1 IP with 2 ER. But his next 2 starts were 6 IP shut outs so maybe he was ready.
IMO he needs the opportunity to get rid of the sour taste of the bad ML start.
