They each had a hit and scored a run in the three-run second inning. Reeves also managed to work in a walk. Dickie Thon Jr. had two hits while Jordan Leyland had a double.

Lefty Kyle Anderson got through five innings against the Mariners affiliate in which he surrendered three runs on six hits with a K-BB ratio of 4-1. Nessy might not deserve a star when you check the details. From Jesse Goldberg-Strassler's game story:

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning and the game tied at 4-4, Lugs right fielder Chris Hawkins grounded a ball up the middle and into center field for what seemed to be a walk-off single.

As the Lugnuts mobbed Hawkins and celebrated on the infield, Loons’ center fielder James Baldwin came on from the outfield to step on second base. Great Lakes manager Razor Shines argued to the umpires that Santiago Nessy, the runner on first base, never stepped on second and that the force play should end the inning and send the game to extras.

After mulling it over, the umpires agreed and sent the teams back out to the field, with the game proceeding into extra innings tied 4-4.

That really seems odd Gerry. For that to have mattered wouldn't Baldwin have had to step on second before the winning run scored? Seems improbable.
scottt - Tuesday, July 02 2013 @ 10:13 AM EDT (#275576) #
That's not true.

"No run can be scored during the same continuous playing action as a force out for the third out, even if a runner reaches home plate before the third out is recorded"

Mike Green - Tuesday, July 02 2013 @ 10:14 AM EDT (#275577) #
Nope.  When the trailing runner is forced, it doesn't matter whether the out is actually recorded before the lead runner scores.  If he didn't touch second base, he is still forced out at second.

Or what scottt said.

Yes, I would take Nessy off the star list.  I was in Lansing yesterday and he had two base running blunders.  With no one else on and one out, he broke for home on a ground ball to the pitcher and was thrown out 1-2.  He also played pretty poor defensively.  This is on top of the 1908 vintage "Merkle" play.

The umpires originally ruled that the run scored before the force and Lansing had actually left the field and was in the clubhouse.  After a long conference between the umpires, they went into the clubhouse and pulled Lansing back on the field where the loss occured.

Let's just say Nessy had a few teachable moments last night and this entire homestand honestly.

Upon further review and examining the evidence, today's third star will go to Mitch Nay. I'm sure this is an honour he'll always cherish and he'll run and tell all his friends! ;D

The Blue Jays have signed Venezuelan shortstop Yeltsin Gudino, the No. 8 international prospect for July 2.

Gudino, 16, is 6 feet, 155 pounds and earns praise for his simple righthanded swing, ability to hit in games and smooth defense. Gudino trained at Carlos Guillen’s academy.

The Blue Jays have signed Venezuelan outfielder Freddy Rodriguez, the No. 18 international prospect for July 2.

Rodriguez, 16, is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and has impressed some scouts for his advanced hitting approach from the left side of the plate. He flashes above-average speed and has a chance to stick in center field. Rodriguez trains at Carlos Guillen’s academy.

Not bad.  If an international draft was in place odds are the Jays would've been lucky to get Yeltsin and probably miss out on Rodriguez.  If they can get another top 10 then I'll be impressed.

Anthony Alford called up to Lansing.

I wonder who's getting moved up to Dunedin? Either Smith or Pompey I would guess.

huh, Markus Brisker, Jorge Vega-Rosado, and Ronnie Melendez were all released from Vancouver and, presumably, the Jays organization. Brisker was converted to a pitcher but had a K:BB of 4:10 in 4.2 innings. Not a big sample size, but if you can't control your pitches in Short-Season A, then you're probably not much of a guy. Justin Jackson is still at Lansing pitching alright, as our other conversion guy.

Melendez is a JUCO 24th rounder in 2010 who is 23 and didn't hit at all in sixty-some ABs across Lansing and Vancouver, and Vega-Rosado is another JUCO guy from the 28th round in 2011 who I remember from his draft year as a plus MIF defender, but who has only really hit in the GCL and Appy league.

the Alford promotion is really interesting. If it's just to fill a spot because of injuries, there's numerous older college org guys floating around the lower minors. Maybe they want to get him Low-A experience so that they can start him in Low-A next year and get him an extra 3 months of reps before he goes to play football in mid-July 2014? Has also showed a fairly polished batting eye so far in a small sample size, with a very healthy BB:K ratio + the excellent raw tools we're still assuming he has, so I'm guessing they think he can handle Low-A without striking out a million times?

Alford.

They did the same last year when his baseball season was over, just to manage roster, so not sure we see him in Lansing.  Hope i'm wrong

I am not sure how well Alford will hit in Lansing. So what is behind the move? The Jays want Alford to drop football and play baseball full time. Development time is important in baseball and next year might be the year that Alford needs to commit to baseball full time if he is to be successful. Alford will probably only play another couple of weeks of baseball in Lansing before he has to leave for football pre-season.

How can the Jays encourage Alford to commit to baseball?

They maybe hope Alford will be successful and think he is getting closer to the big leagues. Or they think the MWL crowds compare a little to playing football in front of big crowds.

In summary I think the Jays treatment of Alford has as much to do with psychology as it does with development.

Blue Jays Ink 14 International Free Agents

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have signed 14 international free agents, among them SS YELTSIN GUDINO, CF FREDDY RODRIGUEZ from Venezuela and SS JESUS RAMIREZ and SS MIGUEL ALMONTE from the Dominican Republic.

GUDINO, 16, is recognized the top young shortstop out of Venezuela and ranking as the 8th best overall international prospect by Baseball America. The 6-0, 150 pound shortstop excelled at the 15U World Championship last August in Mexico batting .458 with a .611 OBP and a .833 SLG and has continued to show an advanced hitting approach for his age.

RODRIGUEZ, 16, also attends Carlos Guillen's academy as does Gudino, and stands out for his baseball instincts. At 6-1, 180 pounds has shown above average speed, ranking him the 18th best international prospect by Baseball America.

When you consider Alford will be approximately 1 full year behind his Draft Class when he goes back to NCAA Football, when will it be time for A.A. to say "pick one"?
Lugnut Fan - Wednesday, July 03 2013 @ 05:31 AM EDT (#275716) #
I think Alford will struggle in the MWL if this is true. As has been mentioned, they put him on the roster in Lansing last year about this time to manage him on a roster while he returned to prepare for football. I have not seen an official roster transaction come down from Lansing yet (let me know if I missed something Gerry), which makes me think this is what is going on again.

If he truly has left to play football, you may have your answer as to what he chooses. He transferred schools, and per NCAA rules can not play at all this season. If he put baseball development on hold to practice with his new team, yet not play a single down in a game, well it speaks volumes to me. Actually it spoke loud to me when he put off ST and didn't show until after spring football.

In talking with a couple scouts last year, they told me that if he commits full time, the Jays got a steal because he was a top five or top ten pick in their estimation. The problem they said was that his commitment to football is extremely strong.

Gerry is right, the Jays almost certainly will have to make him choose next season. The problem is the he will be NFL draft eligible after the 2014 season I believe and I anticipate he eill hit the grid iron even harder next season.

I believe you are all right...

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts, in conjunction with the Toronto Blue Jays, announced that outfielder Anthony Alford has been transferred to Lansing's roster from the Gulf Coast Blue Jays and placed on the Temporarily Inactive List.

He's gone back to school.  This is the same thing as last year.  He's not playing for Lansing.
