A 3-2 night for the affiliates featured two overtime victories and a six-run rally in the ninth. Dunedin needs a victory today to clinch their first-half division title. The bad news was a shutout loss and an overtime loss.

Gwinnett 2 Buffalo 0

Buffalo, NY
Dave Bush (7-5) did his best to keep the Bisons in it. He pitched six scoreless frames before the Braves broke through for a run in the seventh. Bush's final line was 6 1/3 innings of five-hit ball, two walks and two hit by pitches along with five strikeouts and eight groundouts. Lefty Buddy Caryle stranded both Bush runners but served up a solo homer in the eighth among his two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He had also a punchout. Brad Lincoln walked one and struck out two in a shutout ninth.

The Bisons had just three hits with Anthony Gose getting a double and Mauro Gomez and Ryan Goins picking up singles. Sean Ochinko walked twice and Jim Negrych walked once. Luis Jimenez was 0-for-4 but stole a base. Moises Sierra was also 0-for-4. Ricardo Nanita and Mike McCoy were hitless in their three plate appearances. McCoy replaced Andy LaRoche at second, who hurt his arm throwing according to a tweet from Amy Moritz (@amymoritz) of The Buffalo News.

Altoona 5 New Hampshire 4 (10 Innings)

Altoona, PA — New Hampshire scored three times in the ninth to take a 4-3 lead but the Pirates affiliate scored a run to tie it before walking it off in overtime. Marcus Walden pitched 7 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks. Two of those runs were the result of a home run. He struck out four and collected six groundball outs. Lefty Evan Crawford got the final out of the eighth but gave up a double to start the ninth. Dustin Antolin gave up the game tying single for the blown save. Tyson Brummett took over in the tenth and could only retire one hitter as the Curve produced the winning run on three hits.

New Hampshire's first run did not come until the eighth when A.J. Jimenez lifted a sacrifice fly. Brian Van Kirk gave the Fisher Cats the short-lived lead with a three-run homer, his first of the season. Kevin Pillar had three of New Hampshire's 10 hits and Van Kirk had two. Adam Loewen singled and walked. Jimenez, Ryan Schimpf, Kevin Nolan and Kevin Ahrens also checked out the singles scene. Clint Robinson and Brad Glenn did not, combining for an 0-for-10 performance.

Dunedin 9 Tampa 4 (11 Innings)

Tampa, FL Marcus Knecht doubled home Dunedin's first run in the second inning and lifted a sac fly in the sixth. Mike Crouse also chipped in an RBI single in that frame. An Oliver Dominguez fielder's choice snapped a 3-3 tie in the eleventh. Dunedin then poured it on with a two-run triple by Jon Berti, who scored on a ground-rule double by Andy Burns. K.C. Hobson finished it off with a two-run homer to right, his 10th of the season. Burns, Berti, Knecht and Derrick Chung all had two-hit games with Knecht getting two doubles. Gabe Jacobo and Peter Mooney singled and walked. Jacobo was also hit by a pitch. He was replaced after his leadoff single in the 10th by pinch-runner Shane Opitz, who did not score. That set the stage for Hobson to take over at first base and hit his two-run blast. Jose Reyes was 1-for-5 before Dominguez pinch-hit for him. Nick Baligod was 0-for-5 but walked once.

Scott Copeland
did not have his best stuff as evidenced by five hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Somehow, the Yankees could only manage a couple of runs. Copeland put up a pair of fours in the strikeout and groundout columns. Ajay Meyer prevented Copeland's line from getting worse by stranding two runners and striking out three of the four hitters he faced in 1 1/3 perfect frames. Lefty Tyler Ybarra was nicked for a hit but struck out two in a shutout inning. Blake McFarland was charged with a blown save as the Yankees strung together a run on three hits in his one inning of work. Southpaw John Anderson supplied two innings of one-hit relief, with all six outs not leaving the infield. Lefthander Tony Davis finished up with an unearned run on one hit but also struck out a pair.

Jason Leblebijian gave Vancouver its first victory at home with his RBI single in the 12th inning.

Vancouver 5 Spokane 4 (12 Innings)

Vancouver, BC — The Rangers affiliate literally threw this one away. With two outs in the ninth and the Indians leading 4-3, Nico Taylor swung at strike three but the Spokane catcher could not hang on to the baseball and wound up air mailing one to first base to allow pinch-runner Ronnie Melendez to score the tying run. Melendez pinch-ran for Peterborough native Michael Reeves, who drew a one-out walk. Melendez got into scoring position by stealing second. The Canadians scored first in the first when Jason Leblebijian singled home Ian Parmley, who led off with a base knock and stole second. Parmley singled in the next two runs in the second and the C's were up 3-0. Leblebijian was the hero as he singled home Taylor with the winning run.

Parmley and Leblebijian had the only multi-hit games for Vancouver with Leblebijian also adding a base on balls. Parmley stole two bases and Leblebijian had one. Reeves, Brenden Kalfus and Jorge Vega-Rosado had the other base hits. Taylor drew a walk and Dan Klein had a base on balls in his only plate appearance. Jordan Leyland, Andy Fermin and Justin Atkinson were all 0-for-5.

Lefthander Colton Turner was in line for the win after six solid frames in which he permitted a run on four hits and a walk while striking out five. His groundout-flyout ratio was 6-0. Matt Johnson worked a clean seventh but Jonathan Kountis surrendered the lead as Spokane scored twice on three hits and a walk in his one inning appearance. Chuck Ghysels looked to be on the hook for loss as he was tagged with an unearned run on a walk in the ninth. A two-base error by Vega-Rosado at second, a bunt and a groundout produced the go-ahead run. Lefty Joe Spano survived four walks (one intentionally) and a hit over two scoreless  by striking out four. Justin D'Alesandro (1-1) had to overcome a pair of walks to pitch a scoreless 12th that also included a strikeout.

DSL Blue Jays 9 DSL Tigers 8

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
— The Jays snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as they scored six times in the ninth for the walkoff victory. They were down 6-0 before Michael De La Cruz jacked a two-run homer in the third. Juan Fuente, who scored on the De La Cruz homer, singled home a Dean Bell triple in the eighth. Ronniel Demorizi jump-started the ninth inning rally with a two-run bomb, Fuente delivered another run-scoring single and Richard Urena singled home two more to tie it. Demorizi finished what he started by delivering the game-winning RBI single.

Fuente was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two walks and two stolen bases. De La Cruz had two hits and a walk. Demorizi, Bell and Javier Hernandez also joined the multi-hit parade with two apiece. Juan Kelly was 0-for-2 but there was nothing wrong with his batting eye as he worked Tigers pitching to the tune of four walks. Leudy Garcia had a base hit and Deiferson Barreto earned a base on balls, took one for the team and a stolen base.

Jhonny Hernandez
was burned for a two-run homer and gave up six runs over three frames. All but one of the runs was unearned as te Tigers got pretty good mileage out of three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. Manuel Cordova fared better than Hernandez but served up two solo homers among his three hits in three innings. He walked two but struck out three. Rauly Castillo pitched two shutout frames of two-hit ball, punctuated by three strikeouts. Hamly Suero (1-0) walked a couple but kept the Tigers off the board in the ninth.

The Midwest League all-star game was held last night.  Dalton Pompey delivered the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.  Christian Lopes and Gustavo Pierre were hitless in one and two at-bats respectively.  Wil Browning got an out.  As you might have guessed there were a lot of players used, I count 32 players used by the East team which includes the Lugnuts.  The MWL does have a lot of teams, that might explain the high number of players.

Super prospect Byron Buxton went 0-3 while the #1 pick before Buxton, Carlos Correa, was 2-3.  The well named Rock Shoulders was 0-2.

Is today the last game of the HIgh A first-half? Also, which prospects do you see moving up to AA after the first half and which prospects do you see replacing them? I see Burns as a lock with maybe Crouse And Lawrence joining him. I think Pierre and Osuna will replace them and maybe one of Pompey/Smith.
uglyone - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 01:01 PM EDT (#274499) #
Burns is a no-brainer at this point IMO, but I don't think Crouse is quite ready for the jump. He missed a bunch of time with an injury and as of now his K-rate is still too high, and his offense is very babip-heavy. I still really like this kid's upside, though, so I wouldn't rush him at all.

A couple of older relievers like Davis and Ybarra, and probably SP Bibens-Dirkx seem like sensible promotions, too.I'm not sure what the situation is with a bunch of rehabbing relievers - Barnes, Perez, Farina, Anderson - but they could all be due for a promotion too, depending on what stage they're at.

I suspect with 1/2 the season done we'll see movement all over in the minors.  The question becomes who is there now and should they be promoted or released to make room for others.
Rotation is easiest to look at, so a quick view...

AAA: 12 starts for Dave Bush, Justin Germano, and Claudio Vargas - none have impressed although Bush has improved lately (3.97 ERA now, 1.73 ERA since May 24th) so should keep his slot.  Ricky Romero will keep plugging away (8.22 ERA in 7 starts, just 3 runs in his last 2 total). Chad Jenkins should be moved back down to AA if he doesn't improve soon or if someone is ready for AAA.  None of those 5 are ready for the majors.  Thad Weber has done well in 1 start and 1 relief game since being sent down so he might be on the short list should another guy go down. The others used in AAA sucked other than Ortiz (2.12 ERA) who is DL'ed for now.  So only Romero is a lock, Jenkins the closest to prospect status as only Casey Lawrence was under 28 among the other starters and his was an emergency start.  Weber & Bush should be safe unless a batch of guys is ready for AAA (be it injury rehabers or real prospects).

AA: 13+ starts for 3 guys: Marcus Walden (3.58 ERA 4.0 K/9), Deck McGuire (5.45 ERA 8.2 SO/9 4.2 BB/9 0.3 HR/9...bad luck?), and Ryan Tepera (4.22 ERA 8.2 K/9, 4.5 BB/9, 0.7 HR/9).  None have wowed anyone and only McGuire has a poor ERA but his other stats suggest he should be doing better so he sticks around (plus being a first round pick gives him leeway).  Sean Nolin* has a 3.09 ERA and is just 23 with 0 HR 2.5 BB/9 and 9.8 K/9 - I'd say move him up to AAA but he was hurt his last start so that'll be delayed a bit.  Marcus Stroman at 22 is also doing well with a 4.15 ERA 10.0 K/9 2.8 BB/9 but 2.1 HR/9  so getting the ball down will be his goal thus a bit more AA time.  Other starters are non-prospects or in AAA already (Jenkins).  Austin Bibens-Dirkx did well (2.36 ERA in 9 starts) but was sent to A+ for his efforts.  So I'd say McGuire, Nolin, Tepera and Stroman are locks with Nolin ready for AAA once healthy and Stroman almost there.  Walden's low K rate will keep him from progressing quickly.

A+: Aaron Sanchez is the only guy under 23 there and was doing very well (3.16 ERA 3.4 BB/9 7.8 K/9 0.2 HR/9) but not blowing people away.  He might have been moved to AA for the 2nd half but is hurt so who knows when he'll have a shot.  The 23 year old in the rotation sucked (5.49 ERA 5.9 K/9) so he isn't going anywhere and 24+ in A+ means you are not a prospect anymore unless you are blowing people away and no one is doing that.  The only guys who stand out to me are the rehab guys and Austin Bibens-Dirkx who is waaay too old for that league.

A: The big 4 (Javier Avendano, Taylor Cole, Alonzo Gonzalez, Daniel Norris) have 12-14 starts each but only Norris is over 7.5 K/9 (9.6) and all have 4+ BB/9 (Norris worst at 5.8).  Roberto Osuna is 'wow' with a 2.43 ERA 11.3 K/9 1.4 BB/9 1.1 HR/9 so far at age 18 - he missed a month with injuries but has 2 starts under his belt 11 IP 6 H 1 R 0 ER 1 BB 11 SO.  Yeah, he's ready for A+ I'd say.

So the way I see it is Osuna moving to A+, one of the older guys in A+ moving to the pen or retirement.  Stroman and Nolin are ready or almost ready for AAA, so maybe move Bibens-Dirkx back to AA to make things work and let one of the old vets in AAA go (Germano or Vargas).

Dunedin is leading 8-3 in the bottom of the 6th. We are the home team. Dunedin Veteran Casey Lawrence has completed 6 innings.
IMO J Reyes if feeling well may be able to over match the Tampa pen. I really hope the Jays can clinch today.
uglyone - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#274506) #
I'd maybe say McGuire might be moved up to AAA in the same sort of "what the hell, might as well try it" way that Romero was moved up there once upon a time.
bpoz - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#274511) #
Dunedin still leading 8-3 going into the bottom of the 8th. Peter Mooney pinch hit for J Reyes in the bottom of the 7th but the strategy did not work as he grounded out to 1B.

It is now the top of the 9th. We are buying time for our pitcher to warm up. A Farina replaces AJ Meyer, then A Farina replaces himself.

The strategy did not confuse Anderson Feliz who had gone 3 for 3 with a HR in the 9th of A Farina.

WE won

Reyes stole a base in today's victory.  I guess that's a good sign.  He has 3 starts under his belt; I wonder if they'll promote him to give him a few high minors starts before he arrives in the majors.  I don't know that it is an advantage to be in Florida for rehab purposes once late June has arrived.
Gerry - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 02:21 PM EDT (#274517) #
The last few years have seen only a couple of mid-season promotions.  Burns and Ybarra are the obvious ones but don't hold your breath.
China fan - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 02:38 PM EDT (#274521) #
Reyes is 5-for-12 in his three Dunedin games. But I'd have to think that he still needs some games against AAA pitching to get his hitting eye back, and his timing. As 92-93 mentioned in the other thread, the Bisons are playing at home for a while, so it would make sense to send him to Buffalo for a few games, and he could still be ready to join the Jays for the Tampa series on the 24th.

Having said that, it would also be very tempting to bring him back for the Orioles series this weekend.... But that might be pushing him too fast.
Mike Green - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 02:45 PM EDT (#274523) #
If Reyes gets 3-6 games in Buffalo and is feeling OK, I will be happy to see him in Toronto.
China fan - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 04:21 PM EDT (#274541) #
The Jays have now confirmed that Reyes will be playing for Buffalo this weekend, beginning Friday. I think he's still on track to join the Jays for the Tampa series next week -- if he continues to look good in his running and hitting this weekend.
Mike Green - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 08:16 PM EDT (#274553) #
Ricky Romero is having himself a game in Buffalo so far.  Options are good.
John Northey - Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 10:13 PM EDT (#274561) #
Very nice from Romero.  7 IP 0 ER (1 R) 3 BB 6 SO 5 H.  He has been looking good lately, not dominate but good.  A couple more like this and it will get tough to decide what to do.  In a good way.
TamRa - Thursday, June 20 2013 @ 01:04 AM EDT (#274567) #
IMO, if anyone gets an earned promotion to AA it will come after THEIR ASB (3+ weeks out) not now...and then lower level moves if applicable will flow from that.

Baring injuries opening the door of course. I'm wondering the the Jays will simply cut Aherns lose when(if) the promote Burns. I do thing that, while it's true they haven't been pushing mid-season promotions, they might see the value in making a spot for Pierre to move up both to challenge him and to open a spot for Sweeney to sink or swim on an every day basis.

I don't see any significant pitching promotions except Stroman, whom I expect to move up to Buffalo after the AAA break.

Both Lansing and Dunedin had they're ASB this past week and they're first season is ending. It would make sense to do promotions now and give a full half season to get acclimated instead of waiting till Futures Game.
bpoz - Thursday, June 20 2013 @ 12:12 PM EDT (#274600) #
I liked Darin Mastroianni. I thought to start him off as a 4th OF, speed & defense. So Kevin Pillar looks similar to me. He sure has the speed and hopefully can provide decent defense. As a 2011 draft pick he does not need to be added to the 40 man roster until after the 2014 season.
jayBlue - Thursday, June 20 2013 @ 07:11 PM EDT (#274625) #
INF Jason Leblebijian promoted to Lansing. 3B Gustavo Pierre promoted to Dunedin as expected. 3B Andy Burns also expected to be promoted to AA
