Tonight Fred McGriff happen to take batting practice at the Lugnuts game, and Kevin Patterson might have picked up a few tips leading to a monster night.  Deck McGuire continued to see his stock fall nearly 3 years after his draft .Taylor Cole had an outstanding start for Lansing as well, in a night where the farm went 3-1!

Buffalo – Off Day

Akron 8 – New Hampshire 9

Deck McGuire had another disappointing start going 5.1 innings, giving up 4 earned runs, with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.  Dustin Antolin gave up 4 earned runs in the 8th inning, and was followed by Chorye Spoone who pitched a scoreless 9th for the win.

The Fisher Cats had another great game offensively, led by Clint Robinson who went 2-5 including a home run.  Kevin Pillar was 2-5 with his 18th double of the season, and AJ Jimenez was 2-4 in his second game since being promoted to NH.

Dunedin 3 – Palm Beach 5

Andy Burns was 1-3 with his 13th double, Mike Crouse had a triple, and Peter Money was 1-3 with a double for Dunedin.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx had a bad outing tonight, going 5 innings of 4 earned run giving up 6 hits, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts.

South Bend 2 – Lansing 6

Kevin Patterson had a monster night for Lansing, in which he was 2-4 with 2 HR, and 4 RBIs, which was all the offense that Lansing needed tonight.

Taylor Cole had a fantastic start tonight going 7 strong innings of 2 run ball, giving up 5 hits, with 0 walks, and 7 strikeouts.

DSL Blue Jays 3 – DSL Tigers 8

Michael De La Cruz continues to swing the bat well, going 2-4 with 2 doubles raising his OPS to 1141 early into the DSL season.

Jhonny Hernandez pitched 3 innings giving up 3 earned runs.  He was followed by Manuel Cordova who pitched the next 3 innings giving up 4 unearned runs.

Three Stars

3-Michael De La Cruz

2-Taylor Cole

1-Kevin Patterson

Exciting game in New Hampshire. They were down by 4 headed to the bottom of the ninth. The first two hitters reached but they were followed by two strikeouts. Down to their last out the Fisher Cats scored five runs.

Here's a page which proports to have the Canadians roster (six hours ago) even though the official VanCans twitter feed says it's not official, so who knows...

http://canadiansclippings.mlblogs.com/2013/06/12/2013-vancouver-canadians-opening-day-roster/

My takeaway?

what the heck is up with the pitching staff??? Gabryszwski is the only guy here that's ANY sort of propsect. 12 other pitchers, all low draft picks or FA signings, all too old for the league - one guy is 25! - and all uninteresting. Eric friggin Brown is the opening day starter.

This means that between Bluefield and the GC, the team has to find rotation turns for (at least)

(likely some misspellings here)

Matt Smoral
Tyler Gonzales
Mark Biggs
Chase DeJong
Adonys Cardona
Alberto Tirado
Yefry Del Rosario
Jario Labourt
Shane Dawson
Tom Robson
Ryan Bourki
Jesus Tinoco
Zac Walewski
And whoever signs out of the 2013 draft.

And that's disregarding guys like Devy Estrada and Oscar Cabrera.
Seems odd to me.

On the hitting side, it can;t be complete and official. No Alford, no Davis, no Dean (in fact, no one listed as a 3B at all) - the only guy listed who's ever been discussed as a legit prospect is Thon. Surely there's more info to come.

I, for one, find all the org guys tedious. I know you need some, a good many actually, but 11/12 of your pitching staff? No thanks.

I could see 10 prospects in the two remaining rotations, doing the tandem starting thing the Jays do in the low minors.  But it does sound odd if there are even more of them not getting into Vancouver.  Could be injuries though, or placeholders until more guys sign (shifting whoever is ready for Vancouver from lower level teams to Vancouver mid-season).  Guess we'll see.

As best as I can tell, Toronto has signed as Undrafted Free Agents: Corey Gorman (LHP),(5S); Cale Wine (RHP),(SR); Joey Lovecchio (RHP),(SR) and Koby Kraemer (3B/IF),(5S).   Of the 2013 Draft: Sean Radcliffe (RHP),(HS) and Mike Reeves (C),(SR).   There are indication of signings of 15 more Draft Picks.  Or you can go here for the same stuff http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2013/6/10/4414442/2013-mlb-draft-signing-table (click on the signing, likely, signed or unlikely and you can see the supporting evidence).

That roster is incorrect.  I assume its from an over winter roster where players are just left on rosters on mlb.com that have no relation to where they will be assigned.

The roster at mlb.com today looks more reasonable.

Pitchers include Anderson, Brown, Turner, Gabryszwski, James, Brosnahan, etc.

Check it out here.

Short-season rosters change often as new players who were drafted get added through the early part of the season.

Gerry, the article that TamRa posted has exactly the same roster as the link that you provided.

Oops, I misread TamRa's comment, that's the problem with reading on a Blackberry.  Sorry about that.

To address the rotation issue:

In these short season leagues players often pitch in a variety of roles, pitchers rarely go more than 5 innings leaving the opportunity for tandem style starters.  In the GCL the starters often pitch for 3 innings.

More specifically Ryan Borucki is recovering from TJ surgery.  Tyler Gonzalez was having major control problems (in May) and was pitching one inning at a time.  Mark Biggs and Tom Robson have not been effective over several seasons and might be relegated to bullpen duty.

In extended guys like DeJong, Cardona, Labourt and Gabryszwski made between 5 and 6 starts.  These other pitchers were used less often as starters in extended; Biggs (never); Cabrera (2 times); Dawson (1); Del Rosario (3); Estrada (3); Robson (3); and Tinoco (2).  If extended is a guide these guys rank lower on the potential starters list.

Not sure how accurate that Vancouver roster is. I thought Marcus Brisker was making his conversion to a pitcher and I was always under the impression that both Anthony Alford and DJ Davis would be heading to Vancouver as well.

it's not accurate at all. I DM'd someone from the Canadians asking and he told me no, final roster announcement should come today

On a side note, our 3rd rounder signed under slot by $150,000 and our 4th rounder signed under for ~$100,000 under slot.

$150,000.00 and 96,100.00 to be closer to precise.  A lot more in the 1-14 range have signed, details are soooooo sloooooooow.

"I thought Marcus Brisker was making his conversion to a pitcher"

He is. The roster page at Lansing still list Justin Jackson as a SS for some reason. likely that's the same situation here.

No idea about the Davis/Alford thing. Maybe Gerry has insight.
