I don't think Esmil Rogers starts more than this game.   Jenkins or another "prospect" will be recalled for the next start.   It's possible Thole and Laroche are being giving an off day (on the bench) due to travelling?

How long until Happ's back?

Did they have to walk from Buffalo?

Can't take JPA's stellar defense and on base skills out of the lineup, guys.

I don't think JP got one strike there or came within a foot of touching any of those pitches on that strikeout.

Hopefully, after I said how useless his year has been, Izturis now goes out and has a great game.  You know the old rule, when you give up then someone starts doing good.

BREAKING NEWS — Arencibia has just drawn a walk, #6 of the season. How do you like them apples? ;D

Travelling - Huge adrenalin spike crashing about when the game gets into the 2nd.   This always happens when receiving the call-up.

Happ's back mid- to late-July at the latest, if he gets to 100 pitches per outing before returning.

J.P.'s now the oldest catcher on the Team, and it's his job to lose.

Needless to say, I am delighted with Gibbons' handling of this start.  Rogers was removed at just the right time. The same with Loup.  Bravo.

Game tied 1-1.   HBP, Hit (second hit by team), BB - Loading the Bases!!!, Double (third hit of game - two RBI)....................... then SF (1st out), SF (2nd out), ground out.   Were Lind and Arrencibia trying to hit HRs, or just being stupid?
eudaimon - Friday, June 07 2013 @ 09:22 PM EDT (#273555) #
Option 3: They just wanted to hit the ball as best they could which unfortunately meant they made outs.

I didn't see the game though (other than Gameday) so I dunno

Perfectly executed game on all fronts. I particularly liked when they brought in two runs with consecutive sac flies with runners at second and third and no outs following Edwin's big double. Gibbons managed the bullpen shrewdly as he usually does.

Rogers was impressive.

Dustin McGowan up, Todd Redmond down.

So I listen to Jays talk for the first time in a long time and the first caller asks Wilner if there's any chance Bickford gets called up this season by the Jays ..... sigh

Huh.  McGowan up via Rotoworld. His first minor league game was May 14th so he could've stayed down a few more days as I understand it but given Redmond didn't have the confidence of the manager (2 games, May 30th, 31st, 4 2/3 IP once in a blowout and 2nd in that super long game) I can see why.  No point in having a guy on the roster who the manager doesn't want to use except in emergency or blowout situations unless you are expecting one of those things to happen.

McGowan's last two AAA games totaled 2 IP 3H 0 R 1 BB 2 SO.  But the 3 games before that were 5 IP 4 H 4 R/ER 3 BB 9 SO.  Seems his ability to K hitters is there but control is an issue.  In 11 games total he threw 11 IP 11 H 7 R/ER 7 BB 16 SO 1 HR.  Cut those walks in half and it'd look a heck of a lot better as you'd probably cut those runs down drastically too.  Still, if his arm is still attached then might as well try and see.

So the pen now is really quite strong.  Cecil, Janssen and Wagner are below 2 for ERA (Wagner still at 0).  Delabar and Loup barely over 2.  Perez was effective in his 2 games (4 2/3 1 H 6 SO 0's otherwise).  Lincoln is the weak link (17 2/3 IP 19 H 13 R 12 ER 3 HR 12 BB 16 SO) and I feel should be back in AAA.  Rogers had issues in the pen but has been lights out as a starter so far (7 1/3 IP 6 H 1 R/ER 3 BB 10 SO) so I'd keep stretching him out and see if we have some lighting in a bottle here.  Who goes down to add Wang?  I'd send down Lincoln myself but Perez is a high risk of going down too (lack of use although after those 2 solid games I'd give him another game or two first).

Thus the rotation now is Dickey, Buehrle, Johnson, Rogers, Wang.  Jenkins did well in ERA but his 4-6 BB-SO ratio in 15 IP suggests it was more smoke and mirrors than likely to continue.  Once Morrow or Happ return then whoever is weakest of Rogers & Wang goes down, baring injury of course.

Overlook May 21, and McGowan's AAA line is

8.2 - 5 - 4- 4 - 12

Sample size is always an issue with relief stats. I fully expect him to kick all manner of hinny as long as he stays healthy.

While McGowan's a good story, I'm not sure why you would expect him to be much more than a back of the bullpen guy right now.
timpinder - Saturday, June 08 2013 @ 09:33 AM EDT (#273571) #
A bit off topic, but I was thinking about possible trade candidates next month. Lind has a .934 OPS right now. If he isnt traded and he finishes the season with similar numbers, do the Jays keep him as their DH against RHP for $7 million, or do they pay him the $2 million buyout and say farewell?
Kasi - Saturday, June 08 2013 @ 10:02 AM EDT (#273572) #
I would have to think they keep him if he keeps this current approach. He's turned himself offensively into Lyle Overbay 2.0, which is pretty damn valuable. Nice to have a guy with high average who knows how to take a walk. Not as good defensively, but he can play 1B fine so it's okay.
92-93 - Saturday, June 08 2013 @ 11:41 AM EDT (#273576) #
If Melky's skill set (limited defensively, slow runner) was worth 2/16m on the open market, picking up Lind's option is an obvious no-brainer, assuming he finishes with a line in the realm of his current .331/.413/.521 one as you qualified it.
