The affiliates were 1-3 on the night. The one win came on the back of a rejuvenated Daniel Norris, whose ten strikeouts over four innings of work was by far his best professional performance. Ryan Schimpf had four hits in a losing effort and Josh Thole went deep for Buffalo. The Lugnuts are on an eight game winning streak.

Indianapolis 7 Buffalo 3

It was 7-1 by the fourth inning and Indianapolis never looked back. While starter Justin Germano was hit around in this one—lasting three innings—his relievers put in a solid six innings of one hit baseball. Michael Schwimer pitched two of those innings and presumably would be the next guy up if someone were to be needed in Toronto. At the plate, Josh Thole went deep and Ryan Goins had two doubles.

New Hampshire 4 Portland 8

The Blue Jays AA affiliate fell to a rehabbing Franklin Morales. Ryan Schimpf, as mentioned at the top, had four hits and led the way offensively. The Fisher Cats, however, proved good studies of their parent club, kicking the ball around three times leading to three unearned runs. Only one hit for Kevin Pillar on the night.

St. Lucie 8 Dunedin 5

The Dunedin Blue Jays were done in by a big inning late. A five spot in the eighth inning chased Danny Barnes from the game. Barnes did not record an out. It was quiet night at the plate (starting to see the pattern?) for the Baby Jays. The Dunedin squad did muster a come back in the ninth, but Marcus Knecht—who has really stalled as a prospect—popped out with the bases loaded and Andy Burns flied out to end the game.

Lake County 1 Lansing 6

A big night for Daniel Norris. Norris struck out ten over four innings. He struck out the side in the second, third, and fourth. Yes, there were two walks, but the overall stat line is impressive and a big improvement from his work so far as a pro. His start today actually builds on several solid outings. Let’s hope he’s turned a corner here. At the plate, Dwight Smith Jr. had two hits and Kevin Pattterson had three hits and a homer.

In other news, Balbino Fuenmayor has been released by the Lugnuts and Blue Jays. For those who remember, Fuenmayor was the first big 16 year old signing out of Latin America under J.P. Ricciardi after it became clear that they were completely wrong to walk away from the international scene and high school players. Blessed with impressive power, Fuenmayor put together a promising season in the Gulf Coast League at 18. It never got much better for him and he repeated Lansing not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times—ironic considering he struggled so much to take the walk. I got to see Fuenmayor in action on several occasions and he had that ability to convince you in short periods he was bound for greatness. It’s part of the reason why I think he was signed by the Jays at the time. As I recall, Ricciardi had a particular disdain for scouting and the “process” and creating connections with families and kids. In my mind Ricciardi probably saw a batting practice and hoping to appease a section of the fan base (Us!) and possibly ownership, signed the kid. He had the body and the power, but a thorough look or simply more frequently revealed a poor approach and poor contact skills. He put on weight and while there was some discussion when he was teenager that he’d be able to play third, those conversations quieted as he entered full season ball. The Jays have spent big these past few years in Latin America and there are sure to be a few more Balbino’s coming down the line. Let’s hope for less.

Good luck Balbino!

Bye bye Balbino.

Sorry, but if you're from a certain era, that's irresistible.

Norris last three games:

12 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 8 BB, 22K

Exceedingly small sample, of course, and the control is still a work in progress but apparently those team officials who thought he was on the verge might be proven right.

I was never close to giving up on him as a prospect but I was thinking this might be too high a level for him at this stage but...this is impressive if he can keep it going at all.

(5 of his last six outings are impressive)

As for Balbino - Great name but Kevin Patterson is now sporting a .999 OPS in 55 AB so he needs some love.

also, it was Nolin's turn tonight and he didn't start. Are the jays actually mulling him for Friday or is there something else going on here?

Nolin is starting tonight as per the Jays.

Checking his stat page ...
Rookie: 1 start, 2 IP 1 BB 4 SO 0 R
A- : 6.05 ERA in 6 starts, 19 1/3 IP
A : 3.49 ERA in 25 games, 108 1/3 IP
A+: 2.19 ERA in 17 games, 86 1/3 IP
AA: 1.19 ERA in 6 games 30 1/3 IP
Now in majors.

Fast improvement I'd say.  By year his overall ERA has been 5.48-3.49-2.04-1.17 exactly what you want to see from a prospect.

"...Michael Schwimer pitched two of those innings and presumably would be the next guy up if someone were to be needed in Toronto...."

There are many candidates for the "next-guy-up" role in the bullpen. The Jays might not have a lot of rotation depth, but they've done a good job of assembling bullpen depth. Schwimer is certainly a candidate, but so are McGowan, Wagner, Carreno, Jeffress, Storey, and maybe also Stilson, Crawford and Beck. Perhaps only two or three of those names have long-term potential, but there is lots of quantity anyway.

Darren Oliver, incidentally, has a sore shoulder and might need some DL time, so there could be a vacancy for one of the above candidates soon.

Further thoughts on the most likely bullpen candidates:

Jeffress was apparently placed on the DL yesterday; McGowan and Stilson need more time in the minors; Crawford and Beck are losing their prospect status and haven't impressed too much this year. So if Oliver is placed on the DL, the best candidates to replace him would probably be Schwimer, Carreno or Wagner.

Of course the Jays could also decide to go with a 7-man bullpen and recall a position player if Oliver goes on the DL. But with Nolin and Jenkins as the starting pitchers in two of the next three games, I suspect they will keep the 8-man pen for the time being.

I am recollecting recent news that Beck was hurt or at least his velocity was down into the mid to high 80's?

Good to see #3 prospect Norris looking good. Lugnuts have won 8 in a row.

From May 21 MiLB IL transactions:

Buffalo Bisons placed RHP Chad Beck on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to May 20, 2013.

So, Oliver has been placed on the DL today, but I was wrong about the replacement: the Jays are simply keeping Ortiz in the bullpen and going with a 7-man pen. I'm a little surprised, since Nolin and Jenkins are both vulnerable to the risk of a short outing. I guess Ortiz will get several innings tonight if Nolin is shelled early, and then the Jays can call up another pitcher tomorrow if that happens. But with any luck, Nolin will pitch a strong 5 or 6 innings at least.

Gausman is a higher rated prospect for sure, but Nolin's numbers this year at the same level are slightly better. Hopefully Nolin does a bit better than Gausman last night.

China Fan - that is exactly what I figure the Jays are doing.  Ortiz might be good for 3+ in relief if needed tonight, meanwhile only Cecil and Oliver were used yesterday and both threw under 15 pitches so could be called on for a brief outing tonight if needed.    Loup threw two days in a row before having yesterday off so ideally he'd get another day.  Ortiz threw 54 pitches, then had 2 days off so he might not be at full strength for tonight but would be for Saturday/Sunday - ideally 2 innings tonight or 4+ on Sunday.  Rogers threw 33 pitches then had 2 days of rest so should be available for an inning or two tonight.  Janssen had 28 pitches then a day off...ideally another offday but if needed in the 9th will be available.  Delabar pitched 2 of the last 3 days but had yesterday off and threw just 12 pitches in the other 2 games so is rested.

Ideally you get 6 out of Nolin tonight, and 8 out of Dickey tomorrow then 6 out of Jenkins on Sunday.  However if Ortiz is needed tonight I expect him to be in AAA for Saturday while someone else comes up for caddy duty on Sunday.

I suspect that's an uncharitable view of Ricciardi and Fuenmayor. Balbino's hardly the first teenager to sign for a big bonus and then flame out - it's not as tough most 16-year-olds boast a polished, well-rounded approach at the plate.

And despite Ricciardi's reputation as an anti-scout guy, he hired Marco Paddy a month after signing Fuenmayor, and Paddy has a very good reputation.
