Game 2.  Can Ramon Ortiz continue to pitch like the ace of the staff?  When will the bubble burst?  The Jays trot out the usual lineup as of late.  No Izturis, Bonifacio is at second base.

There has been a lot of talk about the Dickey effect, meaning the pitcher who pitches the day after Dickey has a benefit.  I could possibly see a benefit if the following pitcher was Brandon Morrow or Josh Johnson, both of whom are very different pitchers to Dickey.  I am not confident that Ortiz will have a Dickey effect.

Alex Cobb has an ERA of 2.89 and a WHIP of 1.17.  The Jays will have to be ready.

Finally what will Longoria do against Ortiz?  I am not optimistic but baseball is a funny game.

Cobb has been better at home than on the road this year. He has also been a bit homer-prone, although his overall numbers are quite solid. Hopefully the Jays can capitalize and put some runs on the board.

Question: why does Bonifacio frequently show bunt (often taking a strike) on the first pitch of his PAs, only to pull the bat back? Is this really an effective strategy? My impression is that, on the whole, the bunting and fake-bunting hasn't worked for the Jays this year. Does BRef track these things?

Izturis for DeRosa as the tying run in the ninth with one out?  Interesting.

And an even more interesting strike three call.  So much for the home team, 9th inning effect.

During the radio broadcast, Jack Morris said he thought Lawrie had high potential but questioned whether he was surrounded by "the right group of guys" to help him fulfill that potential. He didn't elaborate.

That's interesting re Lawrie.  Morris has been better than I thought he'd be at calling players out, etc.  I'd like to hear what he'd say about this team off the record.

Morris would verbally tear this team to shreds, and it would be awesome. I am enjoying the broadcasts this year.

Gose in left-field and leading off today against Hellickson.  Why?  The club could have had Negrych up and Bonifacio in left-field if Cabrera needs time off.

If you send a player down and he regresses, you don't call him up (and then bat him leadoff!) after six weeks.  It sends a very bad message.  Everything that I don't care for in player development is encapsulated in this turn of events.  I like Anthony Gose, and hope that he turns out to be a very fine player in a year or two.  This is not helping.

So Mike. If Gose were to double in his first at bat, play great D, steal a base and keep doing enough to not get sent down...... Well, a double is a good start :)

It's a very bad process even if it works in the particular case (and I doubt that it will).  And when your club has underperformed in both 2012 and 2013, It becomes easy to see why one might not have confidence that optimal coaching and development hiring decisions were made when you see poor process in the player development/promotion realm.

It'll take a lot more than a double and a stolen base from Gose to convince me that this was a good idea.

Oh, I don't know if it was a good idea or not. Just struck me as ironic since your post was still warm. Gose will probably play like the rest of the Jays and be back in Buffalo in no time while players that should join him there will still be in Toronto.

Was Gose actually hitting as weakly in Buffalo as the numbers suggest?
