Buffalo took both ends of a doubleheader.  Dave Bush and Claudio Vargas provided good starting pitching while Luis Jimenez and Anthony Gose provided the offense.  Dunedin had a come from behind win, Jon Berti was the star.  New Hampshire were shut out, Marcus Walden pitched better.  Lansing were beaten up badly but they did have 14 hits led by Christian Lopes.

Buffalo 8  Lehigh Valley 4 - game 1

Anthony Gose hit his first home run of the season, a 2 run shot, to put Buffalo ahead in the third inning.  Later that same inning Luis Jimenez doubled in the third run.  In the fifth inning Mauro Gomez doubled with the bases loaded, McCoy and Gose scored to make it 5-0.  Jimenez and Langerhans singled to make it 7-0.

Six was the number for Dave Bush, six innings, six hits allowed and 6 K's.  Bush was tagged with two runs, one earned.  Jimenez, Gomez and Eugenio Velez had two hits each.  Gose was 1-3 with two walks, and no K's.  Moises Sierra was 1-2 with a walk.

Buffalo 2  Lehigh Valley 1 - game 2

Claudio Vargas pitched well but trailed 1-0 after five innings, in a seven inning game.  Vargas gave up five hits in six innings.  Lehigh Valley let Buffalo back in the game, in the sixth Luis Jimenez reached on an error and came around to score on another error.  Tied game in the seventh, and with one out Gose doubled.  with two out Jimenez singled him home for the eventual winning run.

Gose was the only Bison with two hits, he was 2-2 with a walk and has moved his average back over 300.  Sierra left the game with an injured hand.

Binghamton 3  New Hampshire 0

New Hampshire had only five hits and were shut out.  Marcus Walden pitched into the seventh inning and had nine hits allowed and nine ground balls.  Three of those ground ball led to double plays which explains why he only gave up one run.  Walden throws hard and keeps it down in the zone, he is a ground ball pitcher.  On this day half of the ground balls went through for hits.  Walden had only one K and that needs to improve.  Matt Wright gave up a two run home run in the eighth.

Dunedin 5  Lakeland 4

KC Hobson led off the scoring with a solo HR.  Scott Copeland was not at his best, he gave up 11 hits in five innings, and four runs.  Down 3-1 Dunedin tied the score in the fifth.  Jon Berti doubled, Peter Mooney tripled, and Andy Burns hit a sac fly.  Dunedin fell behind again, down 4-3 in the seventh triples by Berti and Burns gave Dunedin a 5-4 lead.

Berti and Hobson had two hits each for the Jays.

Lansing 8  Fort Wayne 17

Lansing took a 4-0 lead in the third and with Roberto Osuna on the mound things were looking good for Lansing.  But Osuna gave up three runs in the bottom of the third.  Griffin Murphy gave up four runs, Tucker Donahue and Chuck Ghysels five each.  Osuna had given up just a single and a walk through two innings.  The third started with a single and a double.  A ground put and a wild pitch from Osuna made it a 4-2 game.  Then Osuna, with two out, gave up a solo home run.  Osuna pitched to three hitters in the fourth before he was pulled.  His final line was 3.2 5 3 3 1 4.

Griffin Murphy was wild, he gave up 2 runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.  The Lugnuts scored twice in the first, Dalton Pompey singled and scored on a Gustavo Pierre triple.  Pierre scored on a ground out.  In the third Pompey singled, Jorge Flores walked, and both scored when Christian Lopes doubled.  Lansing scored three runs in the ninth to make the score a little more respectable.

Lansing did have 14 hits, Lopes had 3 and is hitting .327.  Lopes doesn't walk much, on this season, and hasn't shown much power yet.  Carlos Ramirez also had three hits, Pompey, Flores and Chris Hawkins had two hits each.

Gose is now hitting .320/.414/.480 with 6 walks and 10 strikeouts in 57 PAs.  He has been killed by LHPs and is 2 of 6 stealing bases. Tim Raines has a little work to do with him.

Looking at Gose's track record, at the start he had all the markings of a fast guy who didn't know what he was doing. Then he seemed to figure it out. Funny about this seeming relapse. Probably not that big a deal.

age 19: 45-32 (SB-CS)
age 20: 70-15
age 21: 49-15
age 22: 2-4

I like Gose's offensive numbers by year...  Here are his OPS each year from age 17 to this season: 652-676-724-763-785-894 (not counting ML time last year).  Over those seasons he climbed from rookie to A to A+ to AA to AAA (PCL) to AAA (IL).

In short, normally guys numbers drop as they climb.  This year, going from the video game land of Las Vegas to Buffalo he was supposed to slow down, but instead his OPS is 100 points higher so far.  This is a very good sign.  His OBP also has climbed every year while his slugging percentage went down only between his age 17 and 18 seasons and that was barely (359 to 353).  His ML OPS was just 622 last year, but hopefully when he gets another shot he'll up that significantly.  If he can have an 800 OPS in the majors he'll be fantastic as odds are it will have a heavier OBP component than other Jays thus have more value.  Not to mention his defense of course.

Considering the minor league season has only been about 2 weeks, maybe we should wait longer to see how a player is actually adjusting.

I checked on all of them at the start of the season. None of the injuries were reported as serious at that time. I would expect to see all of them in action within a couple of weeks.

I can't call the Jays for weekly updates so that is as much as we know for now.

Aaron Sanchez with a bounce back gem of a game today. A no hit effort and a 2 hitter sandwiched around an ugly start. Pity the opposing batters if he finds some consistency with his command.

On bounce back, Deck McGuire bounces back to what we have unfortunately become accustomed to of him. McGuire struggles today, walking six, striking out none, allowing eight earned runs. There are injuries in the system, yes. But, there are not many prospects at full season ball for Jays at the moment.
