Three wins in four games. Buffalo swept a doubleheader. In the second game Ryan Goins had four hits. New Hampshire got some pitching and won in extra innings thanks to Ryan Schimpf and Clint Robinson. Chad Beck was asked to pitch a two inning save, he blew the save in the second inning, a la Delabar. Dunedin were trounced and Lansing were rained out.

Buffalo 4 Syracuse 3  - game 1

This was a pitchers duel between Justin Germano and Ross Ohlendorf, who had shut down Buffalo a week ago, for four innings. Through those four innings there was only one hit in the game. But in the fifth, with two outs, singles by Jim Negrych, Anthony Gose, Moises Sierra and Ryan Langerhans, as well as a couple of walks, led to 4 runs. Justin Germano ran into trouble in the sixth, giving up three runs. But Neil Wagner came on to get the last five outs and get the save.

Each team had five hits, Buffalo had 4 of the 5 in their big inning.

Buffalo 5  Syracuse 4  - game 2, 8 innings

Miguel Batista started and gave up three runs in the second inning, he allowed 8 hits in 2.1 innings. But the Bisons kept chipping away with Ryan Goins in the middle of the action. In the second Goins singled in Eugenio Velez who also had singled. Mauro Gomez his a two run home run in the third inning to tie the game. In the fourth Goins singled and scored on a passed ball. Brad Lincoln came on to pitch the sixth and gave up the tying run. He allowed the lead-off hitter to reach on an infield single but then threw the ball away on a sac bunt allowing the runner to go to third. He then scored on a sac fly. Lincoln pitched two innings and that was the only hit he allowed, he is pitching better.

Doubleheaders are seven inning affairs, this game wento the eighth. Velez reached on an error and Goins singled in the winning run. Goins was 4-4 and is hitting .357. Gose was 0-3 with a walk and is down to .289. After a hot start he has cooled off recently.

New Hampshire 3  New Britain 2 - 11 innings

Everything was looking good for New Hampshire until the bottom of the ninth.  A combination of Tyson Brummett, Matt Wright and Chad Beck had held the Rock Cats to just three hits through 8 innings.  It was the first good start of the year for Brummett who had been rocked both in AAA and AA.  The downfall came when Beck was asked to pitch a second inning, he was Delabared.  Three hits in the ninth let NB tie the game.

In the eleventh Ryan Schimpf led off with a single.  With one out Clint Robinson singled to drive him in.  Trystan Magnuson and Tommy Hottovy nailed down the bottom of the inning to seal the deal.  NH scored their first run in the third inning, Kevin Pillar singled in Jack Murphy, who had also singled.  The Fisher Cats added an insurance, and important, run in the ninth.  Clint Robinson doubled and John Tolisano drove him in.  Murphy, Robinson, Tolisano and Schimpf all had two hits.

Dunedin 4 Tampa 9

Efrain Nieves had beeen strong for Dunedin but he was hit for 7 runs in the second inning and he was done. Those 7 runs effectively put the game out of reach. Of note Evan Crawford pitched 2.1 innings with 5 K's. He might be returning to form after starting the season on the DL.

Andy Burns hit a two run home run in the fourth. The Jays also picked up solo runs in the 7th and 9th. Peter Mooney was 3-4.

After 13 games as Dunedin's shortstop, Andy Burns is rocking a .974 OPS and also has 3 stolen bases. Any word on his defence?

Burns has been converted to third base, Peter Mooney is playing shortstop.  There is no news on his defense yet.  His shortstop defense was good as far as I could see last year but he is bigger than a lot of shortstops at 6'2".

Burns is off to a nice start, and it's been across-the-board- 6 extra base hits, 7 walks and 5 strikeouts in 55 PAs.  He's 22 years old in high A ball and he will be turning 23 in the summer, so the odds are against him.  We'll see if it's just a hot start or a sign of significant development.

Travis D'Arnaud injured again! This guy has a glass body.

I decided to look at some of our former prospects:

D'Arnaud was hitting .250/.429/.472 in Vegas.  His line is helped by 12 walks in 48 plate appearances.  That's a 25% walk rate.

Noah Syndergaard has started strongly in the FSL.  He has made 2 starts with a 2.00 ERA and a WHIP of 1.33.  But he has 13 K's in 9 innings, that is very good.

Justin Nicolino, 3 starts, 3.60 ERA in the FSL.  One area to watch, just 6 K's in 15 innings.

Anthony DeSclafani has made two starts in the FSL, one good, one not so good, although the 5 runs he gave up in his bad start in less than an inning were unearned.

d'Arnaud is injured along with Hechavarria, Marisnick, and Alvarez. Apparently the Jays injury curse carries with you.

How on earth does Anthony Gose only have 2 stolen bases thus far?

Out of all the prospects we traded within the last year, I think the one that we might really regret moving (especially for JA Happ) will be Carlos Perez.  He's going to be great imho.

An info but I don't know if it is relevant to post here:

Canadian Jamie Romak is having a very good full AAA season with the Cardinals AAA Memphis: he is the OF leader for OPS.

I am not sure but if the Jays is always on the lookout for higher minor league depth, could he replace Langerhans or sometime during this season take Clint Robinson's 40-man roster spot ?

Jim Negrych has just hit for the cycle in Buffalo this afternoon, and its only the 6th inning. The Bisons are hitting the crap out of the ball early in the season.  Negrych is batting around .500 with a OPS of roughly 1.500.  SSS I know but that is ridiculous.  Looking down that lineup, at least there are some players who might be remotely helpful if the they needed to be called up.

d'Arnaud's injury, a foot fracture, probably means nothing in the long-term.

I didn't realize that the Astros had started Perez in double A this year.  He's only 22 and if he can put it together (and many of us have believed that he can), he's on track to be a valuable major league player.

This is getting ridiculous for the Bisons today, you guys should have a look at this boxscore.  Ignore the pitching stats for either team.

Others:

Carlos Perez is in AA and is hitting 375/423/500 in 8 games.

Asher Wojciechowski is also in AA and has made 3 starts.  He has a zero ERA, 14 K's in 14 IP, and a WHIP of .7.  He appears to be pitching well.

Kevin Comer and Joe Musgrove are not in a full season league.

David Rollins is in the California League and is pitching well considering that is a high offense league.  Rollins has made three starts and has an ERA of zero.  He has 15 K's in 13 innings, WHIP just under 1.

And Brett Wallace has been sent to the minors.

As of now it seems that Houston has done well from their trade.

Re: jester00

Does it mean AAA stats are to be taken with loads of salt ?

Mike Green - Thursday, April 18 2013 @ 03:38 PM EDT (#270570) #
Yep.  But, it is significant that Josh Thole is off to a good start (4 walks and 1 K for the season).  The big league club is reasonably likely to need him, and it may indeed be that he is a better catcher than Arencibia right now and actually a perfect complement in handedness and skill set.

So the Bisons ended up with 29 hits and 27 runs today. Moises Sierra alone had 6 hits. The final score was borrowed from the NFL: 27-9.

The International League is checking for us...no team has scored 27 runs in the IL in more than 4 DECADES!

Another #Bisons records: Moises Sierra & Ryan Langerhans each score 5 runs, matching Brett Abernathy's (2004) modern era record

Most hits in IL during modern era ?

Too bad it wasn't in Buffalo - that is a good way to draw extra fans.  Crazy stuff.  Guess Buffalo can't complain about the hitters sent to them this season.

4 guys with 4+ hits, Goins having the toughest day going 1 for 7.  8 RBI for Luis Jimenez.  Langerhans hit 2 HR.  6 guys hit a double with everyone but Josh Thole having an extra base hit (he had to settle for 4 singles and 4 RBI).

Crazy game and it only took 3 hours 41 minutes to complete.
