Minor leaguers often try and one-up the major leaguers. Dickey gives up five runs in the first? The Bisons gave up five in the first AND five in the second. They lost 14-5. Give them credit for scoring at least.

Roberto Osuna was the story for the Lugnuts, Efrain Nieves was almost as good for Dunedin. The Fisher Cats had a great come from behind win thanks to John Tolisano.

Buffalo 5 Rochester 14

Dave Bush was due to start today but he was in Toronto. Tyson Brummett was due to start in New Hampshire, Instead he got the call in AAA and he pulled a Dickey, five runs allowed until he was pulled with one out. That makes for an ERA of 108. Bobby Korecky was the second man in and he gave up 5 runs in the second inning. Brad Lincoln also gave up three runs, he hasn't found his form yet.

The Bisons had 4 home runs, Andy LaRoche had two. Eugenio Velez and Jim Negrych also homered. LaRoche, Negrych and Moises Sierra each had two hits. Gose was 0-5 but no K's. Goins was 1-4.

Reading 5 New Hampshire 6

With Brummett promoted Clint Everts was called on to start. He gave up 4 runs in 4 innings. He was replaced by Matt Wright setting up the Wright vs Wright battle. Austin Wright had started for Reading.

John Tolisano was the big hitter for New Hampshire. He hit a two run home run in the fifth to give NH a 5-4 lead. Then with the score tied at 5 in the bottom of the eighth Tolisano tripled with one out. With two outs Kevin Pillar singled in the go-ahead run. Chad Beck struck out the side in the ninth for the save. Tolisano was the only hitter with two hits.

Dunedin 6 Clearwater 1

Rule 5 pick Efrain Nieves pitched five shutout innings. Italian World Baseball Classic player Marco Grifantini pitched three innings allowing one run.

Dunedin scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Andy Burns had two hits and a walk with two steals. Jon Jones had two hits and two steals. Matt Newman in his first game had two doubles.

Lansing 7 Lake County 1

Roberto Osuna was the star of this game. He pitched five innings with 8 K's. He didn't walk anyone and gave up two hits.

Balbino Fuenmayor, Kellen Sweeney and Gustavo Pierre had two hits each. Balbino and Carlos Ramirez each hit a home run.

#3 - Efrain Nieves

Does anyone know why Kawasaki has only played in 1 of the first 4 games for Buffalo? Some of us had a theory that he'd be the first infielder to be promoted to Toronto if there was an injury to Izturis or Reyes or DeRosa. He's also presumably getting a higher salary than most of the minor-leaguers (since he was lured over from Japan), and he has a season of major-league experience last year. Is he nursing an injury, or were we wrong to think that he's ahead of Goins on the depth chart?

Kawasaki is a major league backup. Goins is the prospect. I answered this a week or so ago and I forget the exact age, Kawasaki is mid-30's, maybe 34, he is one year insurance. And if he is called up he would be the backup behind Izturis. Goins could have major league value and so he plays.

Kawasaki, short term insurance
Goins, long term asset

Gerry, do you know the severity of Sean Nolin's injury?

Also, the Lansing starting rotation is something. All 5 of Avendando, Cole, A.Gonzalez, Osuna, and Norris all have legitimate long term potential.

I talked about Nolin's injury in the roster thread a few days ago. It's not serious, he should be back in a week or two, or whenever it warms up in the northeast.

I'm planning a trip to Buffalo at some point this season to see the Bisons ... does anyone know the city?  Any recommended places to eat / stay / visit?

Great outing for Osuna.  5/1 GO/FO in addition to the very pleasing strikeouts and absence of walks.

Gerry, of course I realize that Kawasaki is a major-league backup, rather than a prospect, but my question was different: how do the Jays expect him to be ready to step into the major-league lineup if he's not getting any playing time? I'm sure there's some kind of explanation -- maybe he has a minor injury -- but it seems odd.

It's possible that Kawasaki had a minor injury or was just out of shape at the time of signing.  He first played on Saturday and not yesterday.  I wouldn't assume he is going to get into just one game of every five going forward.

I don't think Kawasaki steps into the major league lineup, I think he would be a backup.  If there was an injury some combination of Iztruris, Bonifacio and DeRosa would get the first shot at the everyday role.  In my opinion Kawasaki will play two days a week in Buffalo to get him ready to play two days a week in Toronto, if necessary.

But if there was an injury, say to Reyes, the Jays could call up any of Kawasaki, Goins, McCoy or Negrych.  I don't think it is automatic that Kawasaki would be the guy.

Thanks, Gerry. Hadn't realized that Goins or Negrych could have a shot at it too.

jerjapan, here’s an excerpt from Robert MacLeod’s piece, “ Five reasons to make the trip to Buffalo to see the Bisons”,  published Thursday,  Apr. 04 2013 in The Globe and Mail.

Reason #5 is:

5. Pearl Street Grill & Brewery

Located about five minutes from the stadium, this sprawling establishment is a great spot to visit before or after a game. The menu is good and the selection of craft beers brewed on the premises is terrific. Trainwreck German Amber Ale lives up to its name.

Do we even know if Kawasaki is a good defensive SS? I can't really find anything on him.
John Northey - Monday, April 08 2013 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#269998) #
He was known for having an excellent glove in Japan. Hit 294 lifetime over there, but just 192 in limited time in Seattle.  8 time all-star, 2 gold gloves, led league in SB in 2004.

I see him as a John McDonald type - someone who could be great on defense but lucky if he hits his weight up here.

Thanks Dewey!  Hope that trainwreck ale isn't too literal a descriptor of the games ...

Bisons.com says Casey Lawrence has been called up from Dunedin to start tonight's game for the Herd. Reliever Bobby Korecky has been placed on the disabled list.
ramone - Monday, April 08 2013 @ 08:56 PM EDT (#270007) #
Listening to Norris start for the Lugnuts tonight, the velocity on the fastball is there, heard a 93 and a 95 but the control is not there. Rarely starts the batter with a strike, missing up and away allot, he's having trouble throwing any offspeed for strikes and he's not missing many bats at all. Hopefully he can iron out the mechanics at some point this year.
Gerry - Monday, April 08 2013 @ 10:01 PM EDT (#270009) #
Before the game Jesse interviewed Vince Horsman, the pitching coach. He said he hadn't seen much of Norris before this. Now that he has seen him he has to go to work as a pitching coach to try and sort out those mechanics. Norris' last inning was better than the first two, maybe some positive to work off.

The Casey Lawrence call up is an emergency call, who can we get to fill in tonight? No disrespect to Casey but the Jays look around for a body to call up, they don't want to call up a prospect because they are on a schedule, so they call up an organization guy.

If Bush clears waivers, or if Todd Redmond, the scheduled starter, recovers from whatever ails him, Lawrence will be back in Dunedin.
