The Baseball Hall of Fame operates in mysterious ways and one of the biggest mysteries is how they select the winner of the Ford C. Frick award.  The winner gets to be represented in the Hall of Fame.  Tom Cheek is this years winner.

The Hall of Fame is not a part of MLB.  They are a private institution.  As a private institution they want people to come and visit and, in my opinion, there is always a pull between naming broadcasters who are alive versus dead.  Dave VanHorne, who was elected last year, is most definitely alive and therefore can go on multiple TV and radio shows and talk about what a great place the Hall of Fame is and in that way generate publicity and revenue for the Hall.  Tom Cheek cannot do that.  That is speculation on my part as to why it has taken so long for Tom Cheek to be named.

We also have to understand that most baseball broadcasters, whether they be on TV or radio, hold their jobs for many, many years and as a result generate a large local following.  In the same way as we think Tom Cheek is deserving there are other fan bases who thing their guy is deserving.  Given the competition and the politics it is great that Tom Cheek got in.

Cheek is best known for two things, his "touch 'em all Joe" call in the 1993 World series and his consecutive games streak of 4306.  He certainly came to play every day.

The attached link from Sportsnet has some of Tom's best calls.

Did anyone out there every meet Tom?  What are your most memorable calls?

Great to see. Far past time as a few recent choices caught me as wrong - for example Jon Miller who was under 60 when he got in and was still broadcasting.

Now I'm sure we'll all be pressing for Jacques Doucet - the French voice of the Expos from 72 to 2004, and now the French voice of the Blue Jays. Get him in and we've covered the core of baseball voices in Canada (Van Horne for English Expos, Tom Cheek for Jays, and Doucet who crosses over both). Jerry Howarth we can push for whenever he retires.

Great news.  My congratulations to Tom Cheeks's family and my thanks to Mike Wilner for his tireless efforts in trying to reach this goal.

Agreed, Wilner gets on my nerves most of the time, but I will give credit where credit is due: he is largely responsible for the persistence of the jays fan base in voting.

Great news.

I probably spent 50-100 hours a year listening to Tom for over 25 years.  That's a lot of time and it was worth every minute.

Mike Green's comment is spot-on for Jays fans of my generation.

I always liked listening to Tom (I was seven when the Jays started playing), and my appreciation for him grew immeasurably when I moved to Chicago in 2001 and sampled the Sox and Cubs radio guys. We were truly lucky to have heard him do his job so well for so long.

Tom was the voice of summer in Toronto for many years. I am glad to see him receive this honour.

Wilner is horrible.  This is, and will be, the best thing he has done for the fan base.  Of course, the gloating about it on the sportsnet broadcast was to be expected.

An honour that is well past due, but no less gratifying for the wait.  It still bothers me that the voters couldn't have seen their way clear to doing this in 2005, prior to his passing, but the results of these ballots always mystify.  Tom was a pleasure to listen to win, lose or draw, but here's hoping the Jays rise to the occasion this summer and play like a team worthy of Tom's talents.

Were I in Toronto, I'd feel compelled to swing by Alice Fazooli's after the game and say hello to the gang.

So we have Tom Cheek in this year, Bob Elliot last year, Roberto Alomar & Pat Gillick the year before. A nice stretch for people involved with the Blue Jays.

The players ballot has ex-Jays Jack Morris, Fred McGriff, Roger Clemens, David Wells, Shawn Green, Woody Williams, and ex-Jays prospect Jose Mesa on it. It's a shame that Cheek's induction will be overshadowed by controversy over who does/doesn't go in instead of complimented by it.

Sam, I missed Wilner gloating about it on Sportsnet but can't say that I'm surprised and couldnt agree more with your appraisal.

I had the great honour of delivering a gigantic printout of the 40-odd page Get Well Soon thread from here on Batter's Box to Tom Cheek in person. He was friendly and surprisingly candid about his memory and focus -- I remember him saying that if he took his eyes off of his notes he'd lose track of who was at the plate.

The opportunity to tell him how much he meant to me, my childhood and my relationship with my dad is something I will always be thankful for.

Thanks, Bauxites. And thanks to the members of the Toronto media who arranged it.

I was with NamedForHank for that presentation  - as was Coach (I believe). I remember the Tom's emotional reaction while he scanned through all the messages from well-wishers. An unforgettable day in my life.

The thread in question I suspect is this one...
