Five wins in eight tries for the affiliates. Deck McGuire threw seven shutout innings and didn't have a prayer at the first star.

Salt Lake 2    Las Vegas 7

The 51s easily dispatched the Salt Lake Bees thanks in part to David Cooper's continued dominance. Cooper smashed his 10th homer of the year and is now sporting an absurd 1.375 OPS over his last ten games. Eric Thames and Moises Sierra each had two hits including a double while Danny Perales added his 5th homer.

Shawn Hill started and pitched very well going seven shutout frames and allowing just a walk and five hits against five strikeouts. Newly acquired David Carpenter struck out one and walked one in his inning of work.

New Hampshire 5    Altoona 1

Deck McGuire continued to tease by putting together seven shutout innings allowing just four hits and three walks against three strikeouts.

The bottom five members of the Fisher Cats lineup went 10-20 highlighted by John Tolisano's 2-for-4 effort with a triple. Jake Marisnick was 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

Charlotte 13    Dunedin 6

Marcus Knecht hit his 12th homer while Catcher Jack Murphy went 3-for-4.

Casey Lawrence started and allowed four runs in the first before putting up five shutout frames. He then started the seventh and allowed two more before turning things over to a bullpen that imploded to the tune of seven additional seventh inning runs.

South Bend 5    Lansing 9

K.C. Hobson had a nice night on Saturday going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Kevin Patterson chipped in a pair of doubles and three RBI while Chris Hawkins had two hits.

Anthony DeSclafani took the hill and performed well going five allowing a run on five hits and a walk against three strikeouts.

Vancouver 6    Everett 7

Roberto Osuna, the 17 year-old fireballer from Mexico, made his Northwest League debut last night and came out relatively unscathed. Osuna's blemishes included a runner reaching on an error in the first, a third inning flyout, a fourth inning walk and single, and a fifth inning popout. Everyone else struck out. Yup, 13 in all. In five innings. 13 K's. Five innings. Once more: 13 in 5.
Marcus Stroman pitched the sixth and seventh and allowed a hit while striking out two. From there the bullpen fell apart and turned a 5-1 lead into a 7-6 loss. But who cares. 13 K's!

Nicholas Baligod was 3-for-5 with a double while Kellen Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Bluefield 2    Princeton 8

Jorge Vega-Rosado, a favourite of some on Da Box, hit his first homer of the year while Matt Dean continued his hot ways with a 2-for-4 day including a double.

Deivy Estrada started and went 5 innings allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks against three strikeouts.

GCL Blue Jays 7    GCL Tigers 1

DSL Blue Jays 5    DSL Braves 3

here's some excellent video of Osuna from last night:

I am nothing remotely resembling a pitching mechanics expert but that looks like a very simple, easy, and repeatable delivery to me.

can we consider him a phenom?

Sean Nolin is back from the DL, he replaced Brandon Morrow in the fourth inning today.

nice. wouldn't mind seeing a quick promotion for Nolin if he comes back strong.

Shi Davidi stopped off with the Vancouver team on his way to Seattle and has the story on Roberto Osuna.

Now as long as Osuna's age is accurate (as it should be) and he's not older, which could cause problems, or younger, which could cause problems.

If someone is bored.   How do the thirty-two 2012 draft picks rank with each other, just not with the other years?
James W - Monday, July 30 2012 @ 08:35 AM EDT (#261318) #
You probably won't know that answer for 8 years, and even then it could change. See 2005, where Andrew McCutchen has gone from a bust, to a solid major leaguer, to an MVP.

I've never heard the term bust applied to Andrew McCutcheon. I have heard it applied to the second pick in the 2005 draft who has since become a solid MLB'er. Alex Gordon?

I heard it. Unfairly, of course, but it was out there. The same things were said about Romero, mostly because players like Tulowitzki and Upton arrived - and performed - quickly. There should have been no shame about their early career paths, but observers became very unrealistic.

The guy who put up the video had this to say: "Osuna’s delivery is surprisingly sound for a 17-year old, with no major mechanical quirks to cause concern.  There’s definitely some effort there, but nothing that stands out as overly unnecessary."

Who knows if he will grow & throw harder, but he will definitely gain experience & savy as he faces tougher hitters climbing the ladder.

Are there plans in place to update our Top 30 Prospect List? Or is this an end of Minor League Season thing?
bpoz - Monday, July 30 2012 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#261334) #
Good point JB21.

I could not find the list but did find BAs list. For me the benefit of doing it now is that somehow I am finding more prospects falling than rising. Loup & Gomes rising but may not qualify for the list because they could be ineligible.
Gerry - Monday, July 30 2012 @ 02:26 PM EDT (#261336) #
The top 30 prospects is an end of season thing. Otherwise it would be like BA's hot sheet..."who had a big week this week?"

Links to the the top 30's from previous years can be found under the minor league link above, just under the header.

I wonder if the Jays will advise Osuna to lose 20 or 30 pounds. They're big on physical conditioning, and the case of Adam Lind is often cited to prove the point that conditioning is crucial for a player's future. On the other hand, Brett Cecil didn't seem to gain anything by losing 40 pounds in the off-season, so the results are perhaps mixed....
JB21 - Monday, July 30 2012 @ 04:20 PM EDT (#261348) #

Thanks Gerry, makes sense.

I didn't think there would/should be a weekly update, just wondering if there was a mid-seaosn update, in addition to the end of season, and pre-season updates.

And another scouting report on Osuna's NWL debut; this one from MLB Dirt
