We've been waiting breathlessly for the final roster move to clear space for Happ and Lyon on the active roster. It had been speculated, and reported, that Andrew Carpenter would be Designated For Assignment.

But no. Jason Frasor goes to the 15 day DL with forearm tightness.

By the way, I'm feeling some stiffness in my shoulder. Granted, I'm No Longer Young, but still... Anyone else having problems?

Brett Lawrie's back in the lineup, which will look like this:

Gose, rf
Lawrie, 3b
Rasmus, cd
Encarnacion, 1b
Lind, dh
Arencibia, c
Johnson, 2b
Escobar, ss
Snider, lf
Villanueva, p

I've just been catching up.  I see it was already mentioned in another thread that Baseball Info Solutions (BIS) has redefined their "Defensive Runs Saved" stat to stop rewarding Brett Lawrie for having amazing third-baseman range by making so many plays in right field.  Ref: http://www.actasports.com/statoftheweek/

That's fair enough.  But it glosses over a big issue, which is that none of us actually knew before, or know today, the actual definition of the Defensive Runs Saved stat.  We're just supposed to take it on faith.

If BIS wants us to take Defensive Runs Saved seriously, I believe they should publish, for each game, the list of plays that positively or negatively affected each player's rating.  If they had done this before, we would have known right away that they were crediting Lawrie with great range every time he made a play in right-field.  Likely there are other problems that would be rooted out if more eyeballs were allowed to review the data.

And down goes Frasor.

With Frasor on the DL and a mid-August return likely, A.A. needs to acquire another 1, 2 or 3 Relievers.

I believe that to survive this season without over-using anyone, we need one more starter and one more reliever. To definitely contend, we need a frontline Starter and a top quality Reliever. It remains to be seen what we actually get.

Richard, I have to disagree with you - the last thing AA should be worrying about right now is relievers.  you've got Jansen, Oliver and Lyon who are all good, and experienced.  THe best way to build an elite bullpen is to build from within - now's the time to see what Loup and Beck can do.  Find a starter and you can move Villeaneuva back to the bullpen.

Janssen is under contract for next year with an option for 2014. J.A. Happ has two more arbiitration years of control. Darren Oliver has a $3.0 MM option for 2013, but may just retire this off season. When Jason Frasor returns from the DL, it is interesting to note he's a Free Agent this offseason. Brandon Lyon is a pending Free Agent playing for a contract, which I would give him. Aaron Loup looks to have a home here. Chad Beck may be more than just an AAAA pitcher.

I agree we can get by with just another Starter (preferably frontline Starter material), but I would keep Carlos Villanueva in the rotation as long as he's effective. I would be more ready to move Cecil, Alvarez or Laffey into the pen first. I would worry about Morrow or Hutchison when they return.
