After yesterday's MLU I avoided puns in the title today.  Eric Arce continued his hot hitting, including another home run.  Jake Marisnick stayed hot with another multi-hit game.  Sean O'Sullivan turned in another very good pitching performance, through seven innings he had faced 21 hitters.  Dunedin turned a triple play.  All-in-all it was a 5-2 night on the farm.

Fresno 4  Las Vegas 5

Las Vegas put of four runs in the third inning thanks to six hits.  Chris Woodward got it started with a double and Jon Diaz, Mike McCoy, Adeiny Hechavarria, David Cooper and Eric Thames joined in the fun.

Through seven innings Sean O'Sullivan had faced the minimum 21 hitters, there was one hit but that was followed by a double play.   But in the eighth two soft line drives and hit batter loaded the bases.  Another hit, an error and a sac fly allowed Fresno to tie the game.  But in the bottom of the eighth Free Snider led off with a single and Yan Gomes doubled him to third.  After a fielders choice out, a wild pitch scored the eventual winning run.

Cooper, Thames and Diaz had two hits each.

New Hampshire 6  New Britain 5

The Fisher Cats scored three runs in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead but New Britain tied it with three in the eighth. With one out in the ninth John Tolisano doubled and Jake Marisnick drove him home for the winning run. It was Marisnick's second hit of the game, he doubled and scored the first run in the first inning. Mike McDade hit a solo home run and Sean Ochinko had a three run blast. Ochinko led all hitters with three hits.  Marisnick has two hits in four straight games.

John Stilson gave up two runs in the first inning on three hits and he didn't allow another hit through his five innings.  Matt Daly and Les Walrond blew the win for Stilson, Ron Uviedo finished the game and got the win.

Dunedin 1  Fort Myers 2 - Game 1

Asher Wojciechowski gave up two runs before he could get two outs in the first inning and those ended up as the winning runs. Wojo went five, seven hits, two walks, five K's.

The Jays big chance came in the sixth. They loaded the bases with no-one out and could only score one, and that on a wild pitch. Jonathon Jones had two of the Jays four hits.

Dunedin 6 Fort Myers 0 - game 2

The Jays turned a triple play in the first inning. With two on the hitter lined out to Casey Lawrence, the pitcher, who threw to second and then the ball was relayed to first. The Jays got on the board with a solo home run from Koby Clemens in the second inning. In the third Justin Jackson, Jon Berti and Jon Jones went back to back to back with doubles, followed by a one out home run from Ryan Schimpf. Thereafter the game was in cruise control for the Jays.

Casey Lawrence went six innings, seven hits, no walks and five K's. For the offense Jones, Schimpf and Clemens had two hits each.

Lansing - scheduled day off

Vancouver 4  Eugene 1

Excellent pitching carried the day for Vancouver.  Eric Brown went five innings for the win, five hits, six K's.  Andrew Sikula and Ian Kadish each pitched two shutout innings.

Jorge Flores doubled to lead off the game and scored on a ground out.  The great Balbino put the Canadians ahead with a solo home run in the sixth.  Vancouver added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth.  Jason Leblebijian and Balbino singled to lead off the inning and through grounds outs, walks and a sac fly the runs were scored.  Vancouver had only five hits and four of them scored.

Princeton 4 Bluefield 5

Bluefield led 4-0 after four innings. In the second inning Eric Arce and Dickie Thon both doubled and scored. In the fourth Christian Lopes doubled and Arce homered. Roberto Osuna held Princeton off the board but Kevin Comer couldn't. Also what Arce giveth, Arce taketh away. Arce made an error in the sixth that brought Princeton within one. The game became tied in the eighth inning when a triple and a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.

In the bottom of the eighth Alex Azor led off with a double and scored on a single by Art Charles. Comer went back out for the ninth but he put two men on with one out. Wil Browning came out of the pen to strike out two and get the save.

Jorge Vega-Rosada and Arce led the hitters with two hits. Osuna pitched four shutout innings. Comer gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.

GCL Tigers 6  GCL Jays 3

This was a typical GCL game, nine runs, three earned, ten total hits, four errors.  Alonzo Gonzalez, the Jays 18th round selection in 2012, not the supplementary round Gonzalez (Tyler), started and gave up all six runs, two of which were earned.  The relief pitchers, Brandon Kaye, Willie Collazo (welcome back), Brady Dragmire and Justin D'Allesandro pitched six plus shutout innings with only two hits allowed.

The Jays had just three hits, one each by DJ Davis, Justin Atkinson and Shaun Valeriote, so two hits for Canada to one for the US.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Eric Arce (honourable mentions to Casey Lawrence and Jonathon Jones)

2nd Star: Sean Ochinko

1st Star: Sean O'Sullivan

Osuna continued his fine pitching last night; this time, he picked off a runner at second.  His seasonal line is great- 20IP, 15H, 3R, 1HR, 4W, and 21K.  The club has moved him from 3 inning to 4 inning appearances, and he is doing fine with it.  Every time I see that his birth year is 1995, I shake my head.

Gerry - Alonzo is Gonzalez, Tyler is Gonzales.

As far as the punny headers, maybe the site just needs a stock disclaimer; e.g. "The following header may contain puns of a cringe-worthy nature. You are deweyly warned that discretion may be advised."

Also, have you heard anything on Nay or Becerra beyond the fact they're on the 60 day?

Becarra got hit in the face by a pitch.  I am not sure how long he is out.

I will ask on both.

Thanks Gerry.

That's 5 consecutive strong outings from O'Sullivan for Las Vegas, and the opposition is hitting .164 against him. He has to merit consideration if another Jays pitcher gets injured or implodes.

Thanks, Gerry.  Much-needed relief there.

Hypobole that's not bad at all.  (Of course, it turns on my name; so I'm a bit biased.)

I enjoy all the puns. We have our stars and our utility players. I cannot think of a utility player becoming a star. I can however think of some opposites.

I joined Toastmasters for a couple of years. I gained a lot of admiration & respect for members that tried & did improve even though the end result was still less than mediocre. This is not a dig at anyone and for those whose efforts have gone over my head, I will get it hopefully within a few days.

I asked about Nay and Becerra.  The Jays are usually tight lipped about injuries, and there are some privacy issues at play, but here is the response I received:

Mitch Nay hurt his foot while conditioning and will miss most if not all of the GCL. Becerra has a broken jaw and will likely miss a similar amount of time. Hope that helps.

I think that is about as much information as we will get.  You might see them at the end of the season but it sounds like both will get some reps in in the instructional league.

I am going to assume Smoral is in a similar situation to Nay?
hypobole - Wednesday, July 18 2012 @ 02:00 PM EDT (#260618) #
Thanks Gerry. I had heard a rumour about Becerra being hit in the face and about to undergo surgery. Couldn't help thinking about Dickie Thon Sr. and Tony Conigliaro. A broken jaw is awful, but sounds a lot better for his future than orbital bone.

When Smoral was drafted reports mentioned that he could start throwing in early July.  Hopefully he can get in a few innings before the end of the season.

Gerry,

I was talking to a scout this weekend and he had said something to me about Smoral has broke his foot multiple times (I think he had mentioned four times).  Do you happen to know the history around that injury?

Gerry - Thursday, July 19 2012 @ 09:08 AM EDT (#260657) #

I read that he had a stress fracture twice, here

Now he is a big guy, 6' 8" I think and that puts a lot of stress on your landing foot.  I would imagine it could be an issue with kids who are still growing and putting that stress from pitching on the foot.  You rarely hear of major leaguers who have a stress fracture in their feet.  If this was expected to be an ongoing issue I doubt he would have been drafted as high as he was.
