Victories were posted in the states of Nevada and Florida in a 3-4 night for the affiliates that included a rainout north of the border.

Las Vegas 7 Reno 2

Las Vegas reliever Jim Hoey has four scoreless outings over his last five, including two shutout innings in Reno Saturday night.

Reno, NV - Andrew Carpenter (6-3) stacked the deck against the Diamondbacks affiliate by dealing five innings of one-run ball on two hits.  The run was unearned on a really errant pickoff throw to first by catcher Yan Gomes that allowed Cole Gillespie to score.  Carpenter struck out three, walked nobody and 10 out of his 11 outs in play remained in the diamond.  Jim Hoey threw one-hit ball and struck out one over two innings and Jerry Gil threw a perfect frame.  Lefty Evan Crawford surrendered a run on a hit and a walk over two-thirds of an inning but Chad Beck stranded a pair of runners to record the final out.

A groundball double play off the bat of David Cooper provided the 51s with a first inning run before a four-run fourth.  The first two runs of that inning came on an RBI single by Jonathan Diaz and a bunt single by Anthony Gose.  A Cooper sacrifice fly and Travis Snider's RBI single brought in the other two runs.  Eric Thames and Moises Sierra added more insurance with run scoring singles in the ninth.  Thames was 3-for-5 while Gomes, Snider and Mike McCoy had two hits apiece.  Gomes and McCoy each hit a double.  Gose had two hits and a walk while Sierra and Adeiny Hechavarria added one to the hit and walk columns.

Reading 4 New Hampshire 3

Reading, PA - Mark Sobolewski poked one over the right field wall for his 14th homer of the season to lead off the second inning.  Kenen Bailli singled home another run in the second and scored the third run after stealing third base and scampering home on a throwing error by pitcher Trevor May to give the Fisher Cats a 3-0 lead.  Bailli had a three-night with a double and a stolen base but he was also caught once.  John Tolisano and  Brian Van Kirk also reached base thrice with a base hit and two bases on balls with Tolisano also stealing a base.  Mike McDade singled and walked and Kevin Howard also added one to the hit total.  Sean Ochinko was 0-for-1 with a walk before giving way to Joel Galarraga behind the dish.  Ochinko was thrown out at the plate in the second inning but scored a run in the fourth before exiting.   Galarraga was 0-for-2, Justin Jackson was 0-for-4 and Ryan Goins was 0-for-5.  Goins flied out to end the game with the tying run on first.

Fernando Hernandez
(1-6) got through the first three innings unscathed before the Phillies tied it with two home runs as part of a three-run fourth and allowing the winning run in the fifth.  He pitched 5 2/3 innings and was knocked around for 11 hits.  He struck out a pair and issued zero walks.  Ten of his 14 outs in play were on the grass.  Lefty Matt Wright stranded two runners and retired the only two hitters he faced.  Ronald Uviedo finished things off with 1 2/3 shutout innings by yielding just one hit while striking out two.

Dunedin 5 Daytona 2

Daytona Beach, FL
- A bases loaded walk by Kevin Ahrens in the first and an RBI double by Jake Marisnick gave Dunedin runs in the first two innings.  A Jack Murphy grounder and an Oliver Dominguez double in the fifth added two more runs before Murphy hit his 7th jack of the season in the seventh.  Marisnick doubled, tripled and walked in a 2-for-4 night.  Jonathan Jones and Kevin Nolan had two hits with Jones getting a double.  Jon Talley had three walks and took one for the team while Ahrens drew two walks.  Ryan Schimpf and Marcus Knecht went a combined 0-for-8 but they each had a base on balls.

On the mound, sometimes there's a man...sometimes there's a man.  Before I lose my train of thought, Asher Wojciechowski permitted just one unearned run (on an Ahrens error at third) over six frames while allowing just four hits and one walk.  The Big 'Ciechowski struck out six and induced five groundball outs.  Dayton Marze pitched the next two innings and created an unearned run with an errant pickoff throw but posted a 2-1 K/BB total.  Danny Barnes struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

Bowling Green 4 Lansing 3

Bowling Green, KY
- Lefty Justin Nicolino (3-1) faced the minimum six batters in the first two inning after erasing a single with a pickoff throw.  The third inning was a different story as the Rays affiliate got to Nicolino with a walk, a single and a three-run homer.  There was also an unearned run on an error by Gustavo Pierre, the first of his two clanks on the night and four team errors in all.  Nicolino got through five innings, surrendering seven hits and a walk while getting five groundouts.  "Cosmo" Kramer Chaplin rang up an impressive five Ks over two shutout innings, giving up just two hits and Brandon Berl kept the shutout relief going with a one-hit ninth.

The Lugnuts chipped away at the 4-0 deficit with an RBI double by K.C. Hobson in the fourth, a run scoring single by Jonathon Berti in the seventh and a Berti RBI groundout in the ninth.  The Lugnuts had the potential tying run on second but Kenny Wilson grounded out to end the game.  Berti, Pierre and Wilson were the co-hit leaders with two apiece.  Andy Fermin had a pinch-hit single in the ninth, Kevin Patterson and Kevin Pillar each drew a walk and Andy Burns took one for the team.  Chris Hawkins had an 0-for-4 night and Aaron Munoz was 0-for-3.

Eugene @ Vancouver
- Postponed due to rain.  Make-up game July 24 as part of a doubleheader at 5:05 pm PT.

Kingsport 13 Bluefield 9

Kingsport, TN
- This game was ugly thanks to a whopping 10 errors in the game, six by Kingsport and they still won the game!  For Bluefield, Dickie Joe Thon made three errors at short and second baseman Christian Lopes had the other. The victim was Deivy Estrada (1-1) in the form of seven unearned runs over 2 1/3 innings.  Five hits and two walks did not help matters but he struck out three and got six groundball outs.  The chips were down for Bluefield and they stayed down as lefty Shane Davis let two inherited runners score while giving up three of his own (all earned, believe it or not) on five hits over 1 2/3 innings.  He did strike one batter out.  Toronto native Les Williams gave up another run as one of his two hits went over the fence in his two innings of work.  One of Brandon Dorsett's two runs over his two innings was unearned as he yielded two hits and a walk while hitting a batter.  Both Williams and Dorsett had 4-2 groundout/flyout ratios.

Bluefield actually led 2-0 at one point after Lopes got some mileage on his second inning groundout with an RBI and a throwing error that produced the second run.  In the fourth, Nico Taylor scored one with a double while RBI groundouts by Dwight Smith Jr. and Lopes led to two more crossing the plate.  Seth Conner singled home another in the fifth and an errant pickoff throw in the sixth produced another tally.  Smith socked his second homer of the season in the ninth for a two-run shot.  Conner was 3-for-3 with a walk while Thon was 2-for-4 with a double and a base on balls.  Jason Leblebijian also reached base three times with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch.  Eric Arce and Chris Peters singled and walked.  Lopes was 1-for-6 and Taylor was 1-for-4.  Art Charles was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Christian Frias delivered a pinch-single in his lone at-bat while Hector Alvarez was 0-for-1 in his pinch hitting appearance.

GCL Blue Jays 12 GCL Pirates 2

Bradenton, FL - Dennis Jones' RBI single put the Jays on the board in the second as part of a two-run inning and John Silviano added a two-run shot in the fourth.  The Jays put the game away with an eight-run explosion in the sixth.  Wild pitches produced the first two runs and that was followed by Justin Atkinson's RBI single and Jorge Vega-Rosado's two-run double.  Wuilmer Becerra plated two more home with a double and Silviano scored Becerra with a triple.  Atkinson was 3-for-4 with a hit by pitch and Becerra reached base three times with two walks to go along with his two-run two-bagger.  Silviano and Jones had two-hit games with Jones getting plunked once and stealing a base.  Vega-Rosado added a walk and a stolen base with his double and Cody Bartlett worked his way aboard twice with two walks.  Derrick Loveless was 0-for-5 and Jorge Saez was 0-for-4 but they each drew a base on balls.  Gabriel Cenas took one for the team but was 0-for-4.

Alberto Tirado worked the first three innings and gave up a run on four hits.  He walked nobody and collected five Ks.  Lefty Zak Adams (1-1) worked two scoreless frames by navigating his way around a hit, a walk and two hit batters.  Lefty Shane Dawson of Belmont, Ontario permitted a run on three hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings while fellow southpaw Francesco Gracesqui walked a batter but stranded a runner for Davis over his one-third of an inning.  Langley, B.C.'s Brandon Kaye walked one hitter in a scoreless eighth and Wil Browning rung up two of the three batters he faced in a perfect ninth.

DSL Brewers 9 DSL Blue Jays 2

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
- Jesus Tinoco (0-3) pitched three innings and six of his seven allowed were earned.  He gave up seven hits, struck out one and walked nobody while getting five groundball outs.  Simon Paulino pitched the next two frames and saw two runs cross the plate (one unearned) on five hits.  He struck out three and issued no bases on balls.  Lefty Alejandro Solarte overcame a hit and a walk for a scoreless inning that featured two punchouts.  Lefty Miguel Burgos did not emerge unscathed as he allowed a run on four hits and a walk over two frames but he also struck out a pair.

Angel Rojas
' sacrifice fly in the first gave the Jays a short-lived 1-0 lead and Rolando Segovia knocked home a run in the eighth with a double.  Segovia had 50 percent of the Jays hit total with three  while Juan Kelly was the other Jay to reach twice with a single and a walk.  Edwin Fuentes and Juan Tejada had the other base hits.  Rojas, Ronniel Demorizi and Juan Martin each got a ball four blessing from the home plate umpire.  Cesar Barazarte, Andres De Aza and Gustavo Perinan were a combined 0-for-10 with eight strikeouts.  Barazarte wore the golden sombrero with the other two whiffing twice apiece.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

Chase DeJong has signed as per Callis. Linked below is some video on the fella.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y9OqEezvrw

DeJong tips his pitches with his glove hand during his delivery. Watch the tempo with the glove hand as he throws it out and the plane and arch of it. Notice the difference? Something the organization will be sure to fix in the coming years.

Aaron Sanchez celebrated his 20th birthday in style today, throwing 5 shutout innings.  While Sanchez is not a Canadian, he does earn 30 karma points for having a birthday on Canada Day.

According to Jim Callis, DeJong signed for $860,000, leaving some $2,131,340 left to sign Stroman. Should easily be able to get that done and maybe even sign one of the higher upside picks in the later rounds no?

Another coup by the Jays in international signings. According to BA, we've signed Franklin Barreto, the No. 1 international prospect available.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/07/blue-jays-sign-no-1-international-prospect-franklin-barreto/

BA speaks of him in pretty glowing terms:

"There are few amateurs who have ever had Barreto's extensive track record of dominance representing Venezuela during international competitions. Barreto has played in international tournaments since he was 10 in 2006. He was the MVP at the Pan American 12-and-under tournament in September 2008, then later that month led Venezuela to another title by winning the Criollitos de America title en route to being named the 2008 athlete of the year by the Corporacion Criolltos of Venezuela. He won another MVP in July 2010 at the 14-and-under Pan American championship, then last August starred at the 16-and-under World Championship, where he he .515/.568/.978 in 33 at-bats, tied for the tournament lead with three homers (including two against Team USA) and led the tournament with eight steals in eight tries.

Several teams have Barreto as the top player on their boards. A 16-year-old from Miranda, Barreto has two standout tools in his hitting and his speed. Some scouts project Barreto as a future plus hitter. He has quick hands, a short swing, recognizes pitches well and hits the ball to all fields. With his hitting acumen and plus-plus speed, he could become a potential .300 hitter. Barreto is small and is already a strong, physically mature player, so there are questions about projection, but he hits hard line drives and has shown he can hit the ball out of the park in games, with 15-20 homer potential.

Most teams don't think Barreto can stick at shortstop. He has a solid arm for the position, but his footwork and actions aren't ideal for the infield. With his speed, some teams view him as a good fit in center field, while others project him as a second baseman. High-end projections range from Rafael Furcal with less defense to a Shane Victorino type in center field. Barreto trains with Ciro Barrios, whose program last year delivered outfielders Wuilmer Becerra and Jesus Gonzalez and righthander Jesus Tinoco to the Blue Jays. Most sources believe the Blue Jays will sign Barreto, who is expected to sign for close to $2 million."

Only thing I can see as a problem is the size/height (only 5'9"), but he's young so there's plenty of time to grow. Good to see that the shift from Marco Paddy to Ismael Cruz hasn't interrupted our international signing track-record.

And another one. Luis Castro, No. 9 ranked international prospect (per BA), SS.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/07/blue-jays-sign-no-9-international-prospect-luis-castro/

Interesting to read that the Jays seem to have an inside scoop with the prospects that train with Josa Aguiar. I wonder who he's trained in the past that have been successful?

Thanks Sano. That was fast. Glad to see that the Jays are not letting the grass grow under their feet.

According to Jesse Sanchez, the Jays are also closing in on Richard Urena. Ranked 13th by BA and ninth by MLB.com

The Jays have not announced the bonuses yet. Will be interesting to see how they fit all these guys under the $2.9 cap.

Ideally I'd like for them to land Stroman for like 1.9 or so and leave a little too try to get Kellogg on board. That would be a pretty perfect outcome. but obviously if you have to let Kellogg go to get Stroman you do it
92-93 - Monday, July 02 2012 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#259652) #
I don't. Stroman doesn't deserve a penny more than slot.
Richard S.S. - Monday, July 02 2012 @ 09:21 PM EDT (#259668) #
Signing Stroman (and going with 4.9999%) leaves Slot and approximately $331,251.00 to work with.  Not signing Stroman (still 4.9999% with extra 2013 1st round pick) leaves only $241,269.00 to work with ($89,982.00 less).   Either way, a decision must come soon.   Regardless of which decicision is made, Toronto needs the time to use the crumbs to sign someone else.
