With two games in extras and a doubleheader in High-A, only Lansing played a standard game on Saturday. The affiliates went 2-3 and a top prospect got rocked.

Reno 5    Las Vegas 6 (10 innings)

The 51s lineup, with Vladimir Guerrero hitting third, is looking very formidable. The top 8 guys are all either good to excellent prospects or have spent some time in the majors this year. So it was a big deal, at least in Minor League circles, that Trevor Bauer was facing off against the 51s on Saturday. Bauer, the Diamondbacks' first pick from 2011, acquitted himself fairly well in just his fourth AAA start but couldn't stop the juggernaut Vegas offense.

Moises Sierra's
homer output dropped 67% from Friday but his lone long ball gave the 51s their first lead in the 8th. Sierra finished 4-for-4 chipping in a double and a stolen base, as well. Adeiny Hechavarria smacked three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Travis D'Arnaud had one hit, as did Guerrero in his Vegas debut. Yan Gomes and Eric Thames had two hits apiece. Anthony Gose was 0-for-4 but walked.

Aaron Laffey went seven for the 51s allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits. He walked one and didn't strike out a soul. Henderson Alvarez scoffs.

New Hampshire 2    Trenton 3 (14 innings)

Lots of free baseball in Trenton. The Fisher Cats knotted the score at 2-2 with a pair in the 8th thanks to a Ryan Goins triple. After that, nada, until Matt Daly surrendered a walkoff shot in the 14th. Goins and Brad Glenn had three hits apiece which was about it in the way of notable offensive performances. Mike McDade was 0-for-4 but was intentionally walked twice.

Brett Cecil started and allowed a ton of baserunners but kept the damage to a minimum. In 5.2 frames, Cecil surrendered 10 hits and three walks but just two runs and struck out five. Sam Dyson threw two perfect frames, striking out one.

Dunedin 0    Charlotte 6 (Game One)

A doubleheader in Charlotte didn't get off to a great start as the D-Jays managed just two hits- singles by Ryan Schimpf and Kevin Nolan. Seriously, that's it. Not even a walk.

Asher Wojciechowski started for Dunedin and was mediocre. Woj went five and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out four. Tryston Magnuson allowed a pair of runs in his inning.

Dunedin 4    Charlotte 3 (Game Two)

Things were better in the nightcap as Dunedin parlayed two homers into four runs. Ryan Schimpf smacked a three-run shot, while Gabe Jacobo hit a solo shot. Schimpf also added a double.

Egan Smith went the first 4.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked one a struck out five. Danny Barnes finished things by striking out the side for his 17th save.

Lansing 1    South Bend 11

Not the score you'd expect on Noah Syndergaard's day. Things started out ok with Anthony DeSclafani going four innings and allowing a run on three hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two. And then came Noah who lasted just two-thirds of an inning allowing six runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The offense was dormant with just Jon Berti reaching base twice.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Ryan Schimpf
- 3-for-7, 2B, HR, 3 RBI (doubleheader)
2nd Star: Adeiny Hechavarria- 3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI
1st Star: Moises Sierra- 4-for-4, 2B, HR, SB

Does it seem like Vlad Guerrero's arrival in Las Vegas has had a positive affect on Moises Sierra ?

Sierra is on fire. Has anyone had two games like his last two? Over his past 10 plate appearances, he has 7 hits, 4 home runs, 7 runs batted in, a double and a walk.

Extend it back to the past 5 games, and he has 12 hits. Extend it back to the past 10 games, and he has an OPS of 1.235. And let's not forget his excellent defensive skills.

And he's still only 23 years old. It will be interesting to see whether he or Gose is judged to be ready for the majors first.

In addition to all the free baseball mentioned above, there was a 2nd game by the Fisher Cats that braden missed. And it went 15 innings. (The first game, in which Brett Cecil had started, was merely the continuation of a suspended game from the day before.)

In the 15-inning game, New Hampshire lost 6-5 to Trenton. Deck McGuire started the game and allowed only 3 hits in his 5.1 innings, but unfortunately he also walked 5 batters. He is still struggling.

God, I love Ashby's commentary. Telling it as it. The Jays' hitters are not aggressive and not very good.

I wrote a report here after Drew Hutchsion's first start. I also got to see a start of his in person and expressed real concern about his ability to go through the league. In light of recent starts, Hutchison has been mightily impressive and I rescind much of what I said earlier. He has found some velocity here in his recent starts and been able to vary that velocity throughout an outing. The command has come along quite well and he is learning very quickly how to keep hitters off-balance. I was worried that he might not have the gusto to pitch inside to some of the big time LH hitters in the league, but he has worked both sides of the plate to good effect. He's throwing his off-speed stuff a bit more and really exploiting the holes in swings and hitter's susceptibilities. The slider too seems to have a bit more bite and depth than what I saw. I think hitting Kevin Youkilis today too will earn him some respect in that locker room and across baseball. You don't ever want to see baseballs flying at people's heads, but one of the Red Sox had to go down today and Hutchison picked the right spot to hit someone (in the game). Top marks to Hutchison for his performances recently.

David Cooper is a good influence on this line-up. It sounds a bit odd, but too many of the Jays have fairly high maintenance swings and issues with their overall approach and ability to make consistent contact. Cooper's no frills swing and consistent approach has provided a nice balance to the lineup in recent games. I hope they find him consistent at-bats through interleague play and if guys like Lawrie, Rasmus, Left Fielder come along a first basemen with Cooper's profile fits nicely into the lineup long-term.

Just when his hitting was looking good, Cooper made a couple of base-running blunders today. In the 5th inning, he thought he hit a home run, loafed out of the box, tried to turn on the jets, and got thrown out at third base. Then in the 8th inning he got picked off first base.

But if you exclude his first dozen games in the majors, his hitting numbers are pretty good. (Still a small sample size, of course.) His OPS was .851 in his second stint in the majors last year (40 plate appearances) and this year it is .816 in 30 plate appearances. It's interesting that Farrell chose to put him in the 5th slot in the lineup today. He's obviously got some confidence in the kid.

Sam I enjoy reading your scouting reports. I have also been very impressed by Hutchison over the last 2 starts against good A.L. East teams.

He is throwing harder - his average velocity over the last 2 starts has been over 92 compared to 90 earlier and he can hit 95 deep into games. If he can maintain this new velocity he might have a higher ceiling than I originally thought.

Neurolaw, thank you very much. I agree with you that the velocity has been impressive and agree that it pushes him into a new long-term projection. I think the slider as well seems to have a bit more swing and miss quality to it. He has just recently been stretched out in terms of innings and pitches per start so it's even more impressive that he's now found this in his game. It bodes well for him and the Jays long-term that he was able to find increased velocity and bite to his slider despite the elongated starts.

I was very impressed with Hutchinson yesterday.  His mental framework is spectactulor.  The guy is pure business.  I think the Jays have a winner here.

Marcus Walden beat Archie Bradley in South Bend this morning 1-0.  With the victory, Lansing's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to one.  Lansing has tomorrow off and plays at home on Wednesday with Sancholino on the mound.  Looking for them to wrap it up then.
