Vlad Guerrero played his fourth game on Thursday for the Dunedin Blue Jays. The man among the boys also hit his 4th homer. His OPS is a mere 1.550 in those games. One might surmise he is very close to being a Toronto Blue Jay instead. Robert Coello probably shouldn't get real comfortable. Otherwise, how was it for the farm on Thursday? They went 2-1 with one game suspended.

Read on for details.

Las Vegas 5, Tuscon 4

One-time sentimental favorite turned organizational soldier Scott Richmond was on the mound tonight in Tuscon and turned in a typically pedestrian effort. He allowed 4 earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 6.2 innings. Jerry Gil and Chad Beck each picked up a shutout appearance to finish things off.

Every hitter in the lineup except Eric Thames got a hit, five of them (Gose, Lind, Diaz, Gomes and d'Arnaud) got two. Anthony Gose tripled and Yan Gomes had a solo shot homer.

Statistical trivia – only two hitters in the PCL still have more XBH than Travis d'Arnaud. Neither are catchers.

New Hampshire 5, New Britain 6

Joel Carreno was good-but-not-great in a losing effort on Thursday. He allowed 2 runs and six baserunners in 5.1 innings while striking out 7. He was relieved by matt Daly who blew up real good in the seventh by allowing 4 runs and giving the Rock-Cats all the cushion they would need.

Ryan Goins led the offense with 2 doubles in a 3 for 5 effort. John tolisano and Brad Glenn also had a double apiece.

Statistical trivia – The fisherCats are 12-12 on the road . . . and 8-19 at home.

Dunedin 14, Lakeland 4

Starter Sean Nolin was just okay, at best, allowing 3 runs in 5 IP while striking out 6.

The real news from the D-Jays was the offensive explosion. Besides the aforementioned Guerrero (who also had 5 RBI), shortstop Kevin Nolan was 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles, CF Jon Jones was 3 of 4 and also doubled twice, and three other hitters also had two hits, two of those players also stroking a double. Every starter had at least one hit except Jack Murphy,

Statistical trivia: 1B Gabe Jacobo (playing RF tonight) is on an eight game hitting streak, on which he has at least 2 hits in all eight games. On the streak he's hitting .472 and, oddly for a 1B, has been leading off that whole time. If he were not doing this in the FSL at the age of 25...

Lansing v. Bowling Green – Suspended scoreless.

Justin Nicolino pitched all 4 innings, allowing only a single hit. One presumes Sanchez will pick it up when the game resumes tomorrow, but that doesn't necessarily mean the tandem is busted. The next scheduled turn for the due was on 5 days rest anyway. I think the tandems will run until the A level All-Star breaks. Dunedin comes out of their break just as Lansing's begins and that would seen an obvious time to potentially promote a pitcher or two in order to spread the four guys pitching in tandem out.

Offensively, there was nothing much to report except that Gus Pierre picked up his first hit of the season in his second official game.

Statistical trivia – Andy Burns is second in the MWL in OPS and doubles, and first in XBH

Third Star – Gabe Jacobo, eight straight multi-hit game

Second Star – Kevin Nolan, 4/5 2 doubles

First Star – Vlad Guerrero, 3/5, 2 homers, 5 RBI

I'll say this.  If the options for 24th or 25th man on the club are Vladimir Guerrero or Aaron Laffey or Robert Coello, the choice is pretty clear.  It never hurts to have a player who can pop a 3 run homer about, and if he gets 250 PAs with 150 of them against LHP, he'll probably be a useful addition.

For Guerrero, is there a timeline for him to make the team? I'm not sure what 20 great ABs in A ball tell you about him - ther's got to be a lot of curiousity for the pitchers down there, wondering if they can get a fastball by a possible hall of famer. I know if I was 22 years old, it would be hard to pitch him the "proper" way - lots of nibbling and junk in the dirt.

On the plus side, I have to think a part-time role for someone like Guerrero would be ideal for him. Despite being widely viewed and injured, broken down, etc, he's never really missed much time (averaged 146 games a years from 1998-2011), and never been used as anything but an everyday player. He's essentially the poster boy for what the DH should be used for more often, to my eyes.

There was a tweet floating around last night from Marino Pepen, a Spanish radio host in Boston, that Vlad will be up June 11th for Washington.

Red Sox are telling teams they definitely intend to trade Youkilis.

Now I hate Youkilis more than most any player in the league.

But should we be interested?

If I remember correctly, Youk is due 12 million this year and has an option for 12 million for next year?

I think that the Jays should go for it. He plays first this year, EE is the DH. Next year, you either resign EE and do it again, or Youk and play 1b and DH. You keep Youk away from 3b.

Does anyone have any update on the walking wounded outfielders: Snider, Crouse, and Marisnick?
Krylian19 - Friday, June 01 2012 @ 11:39 AM EDT (#257542) #
Snider took BP yesterday I believe.  I think he's day-to-day.  Don't know about the other guys yet.

I thought AA said yesterday Snider has started swinging the bat, but hasn't hit yet.

No way AA will be in on Youk. Even if Vlad implodes, I can't see it happening.

Unless a team overpays, I can't see Boston trading Youkilis within the division. - Count me as a no on Youkilis

Crouse has a shoulder injury from diving for a ball, not sure if he is close to coming back.

I am not sure what is wrong with Marisnick but I would guess it is minor.  He is now on the 7 day DL but he didn't go on the DL for a few days after he stopped playing.  This suggests that the team initially thought he would be out for a few days but it turned into a longer recovery.  I would expect him back sometime next week.

The only problem with having Youk, is that we have to watch Youk... And in the words of Meatloaf, "I won't do that"

Guerrero up to Vegas. Will play tommorrow.

Wouldn't be shocked to see him with the big club right after monday's day off.

By virtue of his 485/514/909 line from May 25-31, d'Arnaud makes BA's hot sheet for a second straight week (again at #3).

Hopefully Vlad doesn't give any of the Vegas players a tutorial on plate discipline.

He looks broken to me....

Will he play outfield? Do they have to make room for him in Vegas?

I thought this was a good summary of D'Arnaud. The more I read about him the more I excited I get.

I did a blog post Youk days ago. My comment then was the only way the jays would get him is to involve a thrid team:

For instance, as an example only - Dempster for Youk, then Youk for prospects.

Kevin Goldstein said that d'Arnaud has been seen taking ground balls at first base. Which might not mean much of anything, but it's still to wrap your mind around.
Mike Green - Friday, June 01 2012 @ 05:22 PM EDT (#257564) #
It's a good thing for d'Arnaud to be taking ground balls at first base.

oooooh that's a juicy tidbit.

Is this AA's way of facing up to his error of trading Mike Napoli?

For the record, I jest. And I like the concept.
SJE - Friday, June 01 2012 @ 06:48 PM EDT (#257569) #
Most catchers take ground balls either at third or first base. Interestingly Jamie Campbell stated on the broadcast that no wonder Vladdy was hitting so well because he was facing pitchers that top out at 85 mph. Really. I will be disappointed if the Jays draft any pitcher throwing 85 mph.
