Two touchdowns and five stolen bases by one of the affiliates highlighted Monday's action on the farm. Another affiliate scored eight runs less but still managed to get by while a perfect game and no-hit bid went up in flames.

Las Vegas 6 Salt Lake City 2

Salt Lake City, UT - It was a 1-2-3 victory in the linescore over the Angels affiliates as they scored their six runs in the first, third and seventh innings.  As Jerry Howarth would say, it was a honey of a game.

Hitting - Moises Sierra singled the first run home and doubled home two more in the third as part of a three-hit night.  Anthony Gose and Adam Lind teamed up to match Sierra's donation with one-run and two-run singles in the seventh respectively.  Gose, Lind and Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits apiece.  Ruben Gotay was 1-for-4 and Ricardo Nanita singled in his lone plate appearance after taking over for Mike McCoy, who had a walk.  Jonathan Diaz heard ball four twice and Travis d'Arnaud heard it once.  Chris Woodward was 0-for-4.

Running - Las Vegas was just 2-for-5 in stolen base attempts.  McCoy and Gose were successful while Gose, Sierra and Diaz were not.

Pitching - Robert Coello (3-1) met the minimum innings requirement by pitching five frames of two-run, four-hit ball.  One of the runs was unearned and the other was a homer.  He struck out six, walked two and four of his seven outs were on the green.  Clint Everts earned the hold by scattering two hits and a walk over three shutout innings.  He whiffed three and split his four outs of play evenly on the ground and in the air.  Jerry Gil plunked a hitter to highlight an otherwise uneventful ninth.

Fielding - Hechavarria fired one away from short and that directly led to Salt Lake's first run in the third.  In the running game, d'Arnaud nailed a runner trying to steal second.  Nanita replaced McCoy in left field in the bottom of the seventh (perhaps he's on the way to Baseball North).

Binghamton 6 New Hampshire 2

Binghamton, NY - New Hampshire led 2-0 after scoring twice in the fourth but the B-Mets broke out for five runs in the sixth and another in the eighth.

Hitting - Kevin Howard's RBI single and Brad Glenn's sacrifice fly accounted for the Fisher Cats offence.  Howard and Mark Sobolewski comprised 80 percent of New Hampshire's hit total with two singles apiece while Mike McDade had the other base hit.  Howard, Brian Van Kirk and Brian Bocock each drew a base on balls and Van Kirk took one for the team to reach base twice without a hit.  The other Brian, Brian Jeroloman, did not draw a walk so the needle for the BJBBM remains stuck at 7.  Ryan Goins and Brad McElroy were 0-for-4 and 0-for-3 respectively.

Running - The running game did not meet expectations.

Pitching - For the first five innings, I thought I would have another Fisher Cats no-hitter to write about.  Deck McGuire (2-6) shuffled through the Mets lineup with a 15-up, 15-down performance.  However, the perfect game bid went out the window when he plunked the leadoff hitter in the sixth.  The no-hit bid was ruined an out later by a single.  McGuire lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up just two hits, a walk and a hit batsman.  He struck out a pair and got six of his 10 outs in play on the ground.  Lefty Aaron Loup allowed both of McGuire's runners to score so McGuire was charged with four runs over 5 1/3.  Loup only got one out and gave up a run of his own on a single, two walks and a hit by pitch.  Ronald Uviedo, part of the no-hitter last week, stranded the bases loaded but was nicked for a run on three hits and a walk over 2 1/3 innings.  He also joined the HBP club with McGuire and Loup.

Fielding - Uviedo picked off a runner from first.

Dunedin - Scheduled day off.

Lansing 14 Lake County 7

Lansing, MI - The Lugnuts put up a quick six in the first inning and never looked back against the Indians affiliate.

Hitting - Every Lugnut hitter reached base at least once.  Jonathon Berti and Kevin Pillar had four hits apiece with Berti getting a double and an RBI while Pillar tripled and drove home a pair.  Shane Opitz had a double among his three hits and plated home a pair while Carlos Perez added three singles and took one for the team.  K.C. Hobson had two doubles, a walk and two RBI  and Kevin Patterson had three walks, including one that brought home a run.  Kenny Wilson had two singles and two RB while, Chris Hawkins had a single, a base on balls and a run batted in.  Kellen Sweeney had a walk and a sacrifice fly.

Running - Berti stole three bases to run his total to 24 while Perez and Pillar had one each.  Pillar is up to 18.

Pitching - Noah Syndergaard pitched four innings and surrendered three runs, but only one was earned.  Only four hits showed up on his pitching line and his K-BB total was 5-0.  Seven of his eight outs in play were confined to the infield.  Anthony DeSclafani (4-1) got the win but did not pitch quite as well over his four innings.  Three of his four runs were earned on five hits and a walk.  He struck out three and atch Syndergaard's groundball total with two flyball outs.  Javier Avendano walked one and struck out one in his scoreless frame.

Fielding - Syndergaard threw one away while Berti and Sweeney booted one each from the keystone and hot corner respectively.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Robert Coello, Las Vegas

2. Moises Sierra, Las Vegas

1. Jonathon Berti, Lansing

Extra Innings...

MLive.com has a chat up with Lugnuts manager John Tamargo Jr.

"Tamargo said coming into this season, he was aware of the top prospects on the Lugnuts’ roster, including Perez, Hawkins and pitchers Justin Nicolino, Noah Syndergaard and Aaron Sanchez. But he said he has been pleasantly surprised with some of the players not ranked as top prospects by Baseball America.  Two of those “surprise” players are from Michigan: right-handed pitcher Jesse Hernandez from Grand Rapids and second baseman Jon Berti from Troy."

Lansing has numerous intriguing bats in their lineup that are having very good years (along with one that isn't - Sweeney).

Carlos Perez seems to be reclaiming his spot amongst our top prospects as a .875 May OPS has him up to .820 for the season.

20 year-old shortstop Shane Optiz didn't start the year in Lansing, but after a bit of a slow start, has adjusted very nicely.  He's hitting .320/.382/.440 in May for a .795 OPS on the season.  Like Perez, he is very hot over his last 10.

A couple of other middle infielders, 21.8 year-old Andrew Burns and 22.4 year-old Jon Berti are also impressing.  Burns has a excellent .936 OPS for the season to date (175 PA) and Berti has a tidy, OBP heavy, .815 OPS (200 PA) to go along with 24 steals on the season.

This doesn't include the over-aged Pillar, underperforming Sweeney and currently powerless Hawkins.

Not just pitchers worth watching in Lansing.

Gose's caught-stealing was actually a pick-off by a lefty.  About once every week or 10 days, he gets picked off, thrown out trying to take an extra base or doubled off on a line drive or fly ball.  He is deadly quick and his focus seems to be improving, but there is still a ways to go there.

Nice observations AY,

A few more numbers for you in regards to the Lansing offense.  So far in six games on this homestand, Lansing has 80 hits and is hitting .360 as a team.  Hawkins hasn't shown, much power, but his bat has been consistent.  He just snapped a multi-hit game streak at 6 last night, but his hit streak is still alive as he did have an RBI single.  His swing is awkward which Gerry eluded to in his Lansing scouting report.  He holds his hands low and his front arm is almost a stiff arm when he hits the ball.  I don't think his swing allows him to throw the bat head at the ball with much authority, but it is something that I am sure will be addressed as he progresses.

Berti is what makes the offense go though.  He gets on base and is a threat to steal and the guys in the line up behind him are seeing alot of fastballs with him on.

There's a very fine line between "aggressive" and "reckless," which Gose is learning. And it wouldn't surprise me if Gose began to feel somewhat invulnerable at times - not many pitcher/catcher combos in the minors are good enough to catch him on a pure talent basis. But he's going to run into more and more smart, veteran players who are going to take advantage of any lapses in concentration or bouts of overconfidence.
uglyone - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 10:28 AM EDT (#257206) #
I read somewhere that Gose's 3 caught stealings to start the year were all on him trying to pull off the delayed steal, for what it's worth.

Nice to see Perez showing some life again. He looked like a beauty the year before last.

LF, how is Berti's defence?  He is 22 years old, but at 22, David Eckstein was in the NYPL and putting up similar numbers to Berti, so there is always that slight chance.
Gerry - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 12:12 PM EDT (#257228) #
Berti's defense is reportedly excellent as is the defense of most of the Lugnuts infielders.  Berti is above MWL average, Burns is steady and above average and Sweeney is too.  I don't know if LF has an opinion on Opitz yet.

I like Berti in the field Mike.  He has decent range and a good glove.  He is always dirty.  He is a gritty player and I'm a huge fan of his game all around honestly.  I know he is on the verge of being old for this level, but I'm still pretty impressed.

I have had limited chances to see Opitz, but he has made some really nice plays at short as well.  I would like to see his bat come alive a little more, but he did hit a home run the other day.

The guy that I'm probably the most impressed with is Andy Burns.  He has played 2B, 3B and SS and defensively has been solid at all three positions, and the offensive numbers speak for themselves.

The thing about Lansing is that they don't play like a low-A team.  At this level, you see flashes of greatness, but at times guys make mental mistakes in the field, on the base paths, on the mound, etc.  I have seen a lot of that from the opposition in Lansing this year, but I haven't seen the Lugnuts have too many of those moments.  They are 36-14, not just because of the talent on the team, but because they are focused and keep their heads in the game as well.

My favorite Reds prospect (well, it seems like he is everyone's favorite Reds prospect), Billy Hamilton has swiped 52 bases already this season after stealing 103 last year in Dayton.
jgadfly - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 01:33 PM EDT (#257240) #

Lugnut infield ...   due to Sweeney's injuries last year he was only able to get  into 9 games (25 AB's) which means as a pro he has 25 games and 80 AB's in the last 2 seasons ... possibly a fresh start in S/S Vancouver  will help with late season promotion back up to Lansing for the playoffs. This would lead to more playing time for Opitz & Burns .

Lugnut pitching ...  Interesting problem coming up (10-15 days ?) when the "young guns" move to 5 innings .  Who gets bumped upwards and the subsequent promotions, ready or not, on the rest of the system ?

If I had to guess, I'd say that on or about July 1, the Lansing rotation is Hernandez, Walden, Rollins, Syndergaard and Sclafani, and Sanchez and Nicolino have moved on to Dunedin.
Mike Green - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 02:27 PM EDT (#257249) #
They could move Berti up with Nicolino and Sanchez, and reunite Schimpf with Goins in New Hampshire.

I probably wouldn't have agreed with you a month ago in that statement AY, but I think you are dead on.  AA has made three trips to Lansing in the last three weeks.  He has watch 2 Sancholino starts and one Syndergaard / DeSclafani start.  I think he is seeing for himself if these guys are ready and wanted to see what his thoughts were.  I think Nicholino is definitely ready.  Sanchez has struggled with command at times and has walked guys at a rate ~4.50 BB / 9.  Still, you can't argue that a guy with a 0.53 ERA has completely dominated this level.

Ryota, we hardly knew ye. After two games as a Blue Jay (and just 52 pitches), Igarashi-san has been claimed on waivers by the Yankees.
whiterasta80 - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 03:27 PM EDT (#257264) #

Hopefully Ryoto performs as well for the Yankees as he did for us.

Is Berti exclusively a 2B prospect at this point?  I would imagine that he would be playing SS if he could handle it, but what about CF, or 3B? I like having an idea of versatility in our prospects.

Mike Green - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 03:42 PM EDT (#257265) #
I would have been a lot happier if Igarashi had been claimed by a National League franchise.  I re-watched his last appearance, and I didn't see anything which made me cringe.  Kinsler battled him well and barely held up his swing on a close 3-2 pitch for the walk.  The pitch that Andrus hit for a double was up and in, and was hit not that well into the gap for a double.

Cashman seems to have developed a thing for marginal ex-Jays: Wise, Nix, Igarashi...can it be long before Randy Ruiz, Jesse Carlson or Rommie Lewis finds a new home in the Yankees organization?
China fan - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 04:06 PM EDT (#257269) #
It's not just Cashman. What about all the other ex-Jays that keep popping up in the opposition rotation and bullpen and lineup this year? I've not even talking about the Michael Youngs, I'm talking about the very recent ex-Jays. And a few of them are actually doing surprisingly well -- or at least better than they did in a Jays uniform. Dana Eveland, P. J. Walters, Kevin Gregg, John Rauch, Frank Francisco.... I'm sure I've missed a few.... Some are doing better than others...
greenfrog - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#257276) #
Yes - some are marginal, some not-so-marginal. Other names include Miguel Batista, Bengie Molina, Brandon League, Mike Napoli (and of course M. Young), Scott Downs...
Chuck - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#257277) #

Vinnie Chulk (Milwaukee), Jeremy Accardo (Cleveland), Shawn Camp (Cubs).

In the minors: David Purcey, Dave Bush (Philadelphia), Guillermo Quiroz (Seattle), Robinzon Diaz (LAA), Corey Patterson (Milwaukee), Mark Teahen (Washington), Adam Loewen (NY Mets), Brian Tallett (San Diego -- released I believe).

Gustavo Chacin is an independent league. Josh Towers pitched in Mexico last year.

I don't know if you were among them, but about 10 days ago a lot of posters were itching to see Igarashi given an opportunity to see if his Triple-A stats translated into major league success and.

It seems a bit short-sighted that, on the basis of 52 pitches against the best offence in baseball, a lot of people were ready to dump him to the curb and are excited to see him leave.

92-93 - Tuesday, May 29 2012 @ 05:23 PM EDT (#257301) #
I was the one telling people to exercise caution while they were going gaga over Igarashi's numbers, and I was the one doing the sofa scouting on Friday night when he looked dreadful on the mound in the lowest pressure situation possible.

Totally agree with this. I was itching to see him. And I am disappointed that they dumped him so quickly. They threw him into the fire and then jettisoned him even when he didn't perform all that poorly.

From Dunedin comes two pieces of news.  Vladimir Guerrero went 3-5 with a double and a homer tonight.  The Lakeland Flying Tigers' DH is named Zachary Maggard which has to be up there among the best names.
