Three out of four teams lost in Thursday's action, in a slate of games which featured some outcomes that one might not have expected at all.

Tales of the Unexpected

Las Vegas 0, Oklahoma City 1

The otherworldly results on the farm started in Las Vegas, where 34 year old former major leaguer ('05-'09) Tim Redding, who brought a horrendous 10.80 ERA into the game, reached back into the past and found enough to cruise through six innings while allowing only one run. Two relievers contributed a shutout inning apiece and the unusual effort was still not enough because the opposing pitchers were even better.

Offensively, Adeiny Hechavarria drove the bus, going 3 for 5 (and striking out in his other two AB). There were no XBH for the 51's in the game. Hech, by the way, has recovered from his slump and is hitting .400 over his last 7 games, with an OPS of .988

New Hampshire 2, Binghamton 9

Chad Jenkins got the nod for the F'Cat's tonight and as is his custom, through a competent unremarkable game. He gave up 2 earned runs over 5.2 IP and an unearned run that had the NH squad behind when he left the game. Arbitrary factoid: Take away his one horrific start on April 14 and Jenkins season ERA drops from 5.03 to 3.43
The game got away from them, though, in the ninth when journeyman reliever Clint Everts got pounded for five runs while recording only a single out.

Offensively the 'Cats recorded nine hits but only two of those went for extra bases. Ryan Goins, Mike McDade, and Jon Diaz got 2 hits apiece.

Dunedin 11, Ft. Myers 12

The yin to Redding's yank was Asher Wojchechowski. As much a prospect as Redding is a has-been, Wojo surely didn't pitch like it in this game. He ran his season ERA to 5.40 by yielding eight earned runs in only 2.1 innings. After giving up 3 in the first he had a shutout second inning but the wheels cam flying off in the third inning as 5 of the first 6 miracle hitters struck the ball hard and he left with three runs in and two runners on – which reliever Shawn Griffith took all of one batter to bring home.

In a crazy offensive game, though, the D'Jays were never out of the game. Jake Marisnick doubled and tripled in a 2 for 6 night, Kevin Nolan was 3/5 with 2 doubles, Jon Talley and Kevin Aherns were 2/4, the latter with a double to his credit. Oddly, though they scored 11 runs, the D'jays were only 3 for 13 w/RISP.

Lansing 13, Bowling Green 5

finally, the coda to our set of unexpected events was an  event that had not happened previously this season – Sancalino was scored upon. Both Justin Nicolino and Aaron Sanchez reached the 4 inning mark for the second time this season, but there didn't seem to be a connection to the (relativity) scoring outburst – combined they gave up five runs while striking out 8 and walking 2 – in the case of Sachez at least. The two runs he allowed scored as he was going through the opposing order for the first time.

Offensively though, the sometimes sputtering Lugnut offense was running smoothly  this time. The usual middle infield stole the show, as second baseman Jon Berti was 4 for 6 with a double and regular SS (playing 3B in this game) Andy Burns went 3 for 5 with a 2-run homer. KC Hobson and Marcus Brisker had a triple apiece. Chris Hawkins was 3 for 6 and picked up a couple of RBI. In contrast to their Dunedin brethren, the 'nuts were 9 for 25 w/RISP.

Third Star: Jake Marisnick – a home run short of the cycle

Second Star: John Berti – 4/6 with a double

First Star: Andy Burns: 3/5, two-run homer.

Ken Rosenthal have talked to the Phillies about some big name free agents: http://tinyurl.com/crmttuh

Names such as Hamels and Victornio. It's not surprising because AA seems to be involved all GM chatter, according to most. I would love Cole Hamels on this team. Even if we had to give up 2 outstanding prospects. Someone like d'Arnaud and Marisnick for Hamels. Plus I would trade Snider in the package as well if Philadelphia includes Dominic Brown, who arguably, needs a change of scenary as well.

Cole Hamels + Dominic Brown = Travis d'Arnaud, Travis Snider, Jake Marisnick.

Typically i'm synical about trading young prospects for aging stars. For example, last season I said I would not trade Drebek and Snider for Justin Upton. Look how that trade would have worked out thus far. You never know with prospects.

And it seems like Marisnick was a single and a home run away from the cycle unless he plays by special rules because he is a stud or to quote Lawrie, a "beauuut."

I don't think I've seen Andy Burns on anyone's prospect radar, but he's hitting up a storm in Lansing.

.297/.345/.574 with 11 doubles, 1 triple and 5 home runs places him 4th in the league in OPS. From Gerry's report earlier this month, he's also a good defender. Saw an old report at Perfect Game that suggested him as a 2nd or 3rd rounder coming out of HS.

Speaking of unexpected, could former 2nd round pick John Tolisano finally be putting it together? So far in New Hampshire, the 23 year old has a slash line of .291/.419/.395 for an OPS of .814.

Now if you were the Phillies would you really be looking to trade a 28 year lefty as opposed to the 32 year old lefty or 33 year old righty with many more miles on your roster? I realize Hamels is a FA but it's hard not to imagine that Halladay might be on the market rather than Hamels given Halladay's peripherals have nudged downwards this year.

AA was in Lansing last night to presumably get an up close look at Sancholino.  He came about the second inning and left in the eighth.  Niether of the two had their best stuff last night, but did battle through.  The offense definitely chose the right now to break out.

Jeff Blair on the radio just now says he knows this dialogue is in fact true.  Said Phils are likely to be asking for Alvarez / Hutchison...guys like that.  He also said that he's heard that pressure has been ratcheted up on AA & Beeston to move up the timeline for contention - from next year to maybe this year.  Said he'd be shocked if the Jays acquired Hamels but could see Victorino.
Mike Green - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#256176) #
It's interesting that AA was in Lansing last night.  It does seem that Sanchez' control has improved to some degree and that Nicolino despite last night's minor blip has pretty much got everything working.  Watchful waiting is probably the order of the day.

Hamels is a prime guy - ace level. Put him with the Jays defense and you might see scary numbers (same if we had Halladay back).
  • 5 of his past 6 seasons he had an ERA+ of 130+
  • K/9 has been 7.8 or higher every season
  • BB/9 below 3 all but his rookie season, 2.1 or less in 5 of 7 seasons
  • Hr/9 peaked as a rookie at 1.3, then down to 1.2, then 1.1 for years, then .8 last year and .7 this.
Hamels is well worth getting if he can be pre-signed to an extension. The challenge is he'll probably expect $20 mil per year for 7 years. The plus is he hasn't won more than 15 in any season thus reducing his price a bit. Yeah, Hamels is one of the few starters I'd trade for assuming the Jays could get him to sign a 3-5 year deal. If they want Drabek back I'd go for it along with a couple other prospects. Alvarez/Hutchison I'd be more nervous about.

I wouldn't be surprised if a SoCal guy like Hamels wants to see if new Dodger ownership would like to make a splash and pair him w/Kershaw come free agency time

The trade rumours have started!!! Call me pessimistic, but I doubt the Jays are in the market for two free agents to be with big dollars coming their respective ways and elite young players sure to be going the other way.

Maybe this is a rumour for another trade, to pressure that team to show the Jays have other options... or maybe this is part of a bigger trade involving other teams... or maybe pigs can fly!!!

neurolaw - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 12:42 PM EDT (#256184) #
I know we are getting ahead of themselves but Hamels at the top of this rotation would instantly give the Jays a scary good top of the rotation.

The amount that would need to be given up really comes down to whether he will sign an extension and how much of an extension.

1. If he does not - then the amount would be less although still a lot. 1-2 high ceiling prospects and one of our starting rotation guys.

2. If he does sign an extension - Then at least 2 high ceiling prospects and a starting rotation guy.

So lets go through the rotation:

Ricky Romero - contract friendly extension but trading him would in my opinion be more lateral than beneficial even though Hamels is clearly better. If I am thinking along the same lines as Alex I would not give up the first 2 in our rotation.

Brandon Morrow - same as Ricky Romero but even more so because he appears to have turned it around.

Henderson Alvarez - this is where it gets tricky. He is good and through 116 innings has accumulated 138 ERA + but K rates is too low for my liking. Nonetheless I would be very reluctant to give him up considering how well he has done so far. On the other had if he is due for an epic regression now would be the time to trade him.

Kyle Drabek - statistically not a lot has changed significantly from last year except he can keep his composure long enough to get out of jams. We saw a tantalizing glimpse of how good he can be against Texas and his stuff is still amazing but I would trade him.

Drew Hutchison - His ERA does not reflect how well he has pitched and given how little experience he has above A ball his peripherals look very impressive. His stuff is not as good as Alvarez or Drabek's but its still good. I would trade him.

So in terms of pecking order - Hutchison = Drabek and then Alvarez. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Mike Green, I think the fascinating thing about AA being in Lansing is GM's usually use this time before the draft to get last looks on amateur players. That month before the draft can be quite hectic for GM's. For him to be in Lansing says a lot of his trust in the amateur scouting department. GM's usually don't make the rounds of the minor league teams until mid-season.
John Northey - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#256189) #
Also, if AA is down there odds are some trades could be coming that would send a few players away. Not necessarily in Lansing but maybe higher levels causing a cascade effect and AA is figuring out who is ready for A+ or AA. He also could be figuring out if guys he drafts will have slots open in Lansing (older college kids) or if some of the extended spring guys might be needed to replace some of the Lansing kids.

Of course, given it is AA, odds are all of the above are going on as well as him scouting some local talent that the Jays might draft.
92-93 - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 01:41 PM EDT (#256193) #
d'Arnaud & Marisnick would be a ridiculous price for half a season of Hamels. The Jays got significantly less for a full year of Halladay at 9m and the ability to extend him long-term at a reasonable rate or recoup 2 draft picks for his departure, something that won't happen with Hamels.
Lugnut Fan - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 01:58 PM EDT (#256195) #
It wasn't just AA that was in town.  Tony Lacava has been to the past few games and I would guess will be there tonight for the final game of the home stand as well.  It was a pretty powerful front office team on a thirsty Thursday in Lansing.  Both guys sat down in the crowd near the scouts while patrons with hands full of two dollar beers sloshed their way down to their seats no knowing who they were sitting next too.  It was actually pretty comical.
sam - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 02:29 PM EDT (#256197) #
Lugnut Fan, thanks for this. John, you're probably on to something here. If LaCava and AA are in Lansing this early in the season they may be getting first hand evals. for possible trades.
greenfrog - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 02:33 PM EDT (#256199) #
It's probably way early for trades, but I expect AA wants to be aggressive when it comes to the players he wants (he somehow managed to do this with KW in the Santos trade - no dallying around).
whiterasta80 - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 02:39 PM EDT (#256200) #

Hamels will cost 3 prospects (1 near ready pitcher) regardless of whether or not he signs an extension.  Also, if the Phils are dealing Hamels it is because he has indicated he won't be signing an extension.  Otherwise it makes far more sense for them to move Lee or Halladay.

Sentimentality has me wanting to chase Roy Halladay instead of Hamels, but my brain says Lee would be the better option. It would be funny to see D'Arnaud or Drabek go the other way in a deal for either of those guys however, I doubt this is the situation we should be monitoring.

If ownership/AA decide that we are going for it this season then we don't need to acquire a pitcher at the deadline who helps us stay in playoff contention or make up a game or two. This team needs a pitcher (preferrably with a bat) NOW who helps us win leading up to the deadline. I'm thinking along the lines of the Milwaukee/Sabathia deal a couple years back. The Phils aren't the team to provide that.  I would think we need to be looking at Grienke, Gallardo, or Marcum (no you can't have Lawrie back) in Milwaukee, Garza in Chicago, or (aiming low) Wandy in Houston.

Maldoff - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#256201) #
I've been saying it for months (primarily to myself), but I think some prospect consolidation-type trades are going to be in order soon. Most of the Jays top prospects are still at low levels (except for D'Arnaud, Hech and Gose), and if the teams wants to contend in the next year or two, taking some of the Syndergaard/Nicolino/Sanchez/Marisnicks and getting back an All-Star player (preferrably a top-of-the-rotation starter or power 1B/OF) is the most likely source of improvements.
greenfrog - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 02:58 PM EDT (#256202) #
KLaw says d'Arnaud will be a significantly better catcher than JP. I have trouble seeing the Jays moving the better (albeit unproven in the majors) player and keeping the inferior one.

I love Doc (in his prime he was probably the best SP I've ever seen, although I saw very little of Pedro). But I'm concerned about his dropping velocity. Given AA's predilections (youth and stuff), I would think he would want Hamels. But I think Hamels is headed for free agency unless the prospective trade is to a team/city he loves. And you don't trade players like Marisnick and d'Arnaud for a two- or three-month rental.

If a Hamels/Lee/Doc/other Philly star trade happens, I expect it to go down in the second half of July. The current talk is just MLBTR/Ken Rosenthal filler.

There are a lot of reasons AA could have been there with Lacava last night, but I also think it is a bit early for trades.  He was there to see Nicholino and Sanchez primarily because he left as soon as those guys were done.  Both Nicholino and Sanchez had ERA's of 0.00 going into their starts last night and he could have been looking at what they had first hand to see if they may be ready to pushed a level at some point this season.  I made the assumption, and perhaps wrongly, that the rotation worked out in his favor to see these two throw while he was on his way to Minnesota.  It's really hard to say though.

I don't know what to make of KLaw's analysis of d'Arnaud v. Arencibia. Evaluating a catcher is difficult and perhaps unlike any other position really requires multiple views. More than that though, the position requires intangibles more than any other, which make the player and position most difficult to project.

On these walls I have been Arencibia's most vocal critic. However, I don't think you can question his "fit" on the team. From the outside he seems to be that thread that weaves through the rather disparate parts of the team. He gets along with guys, he's young, seems to be one of the players that connects the spanish contingent of the team with the America/Canadian part of the team, and someone the pitchers seem to enjoy throwing too. He's does great work with the fans and is totally accessible through various media. I think he has his warts. Some of his comments come off as brash and rather dumb, but that is eye of the beholder type stuff. On the field he has his strengths and weaknesses. He will hit his fair share of homeruns, but he will not hit for average. He will probably throw out base runners at major league average or slightly above, but he will allow his fair share of passed balls and probably not do the extra little things a catcher must do well.

It's a really tough decision then. It probably isn't one to even consider if there isn't a prospect of d'Arnaud's reputation in the minors. Arencibia brings a lot to this team, but in my opinion there will always be questions with his play that will often border on frustration that might ultimately see him in another uniform. Burnout is extraordinarily high in catchers, consider a couple years ago when the Rangers had Saltamacchia, Ramirez, and Teagarden who all projected to be Major League catchers with all-star potential. That jump for that position to the Major Leagues is incredibly hard. I think the Jays would be wise to make sure d'Arnaud shows he can play at the ML level before making any sort of move.
Mike Green - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 04:16 PM EDT (#256209) #
So far, Arencibia is Rod Barajas, albeit playing almost every day at a younger age.  The major issue is the poor on-base percentage.  You could live with a .230 batting average if he walked 70 times a season.  He never has, and hasn't made progress towards it at the major league level.   He is obviously throwing much better than he did, and this is a significant plus.
greenfrog - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 04:17 PM EDT (#256210) #
I agree with a lot of sam's post. I would like to see the Jays hang on to both players for at least another year, maybe two. D'Arnaud could spend 2013 in the majors learning from Arencibia, maybe catching and getting some ABs as a DH. If the front office still loves d'Arnaud in a year, they could move Arencibia at the 2013 deadline or that off-season (which might also be when Arencibia's market value is at its peak). The team's epic search for a competent catcher only recently ended - I'm not anxious to see them start another one anytime soon.
greenfrog - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 04:43 PM EDT (#256213) #
Given that it's May 11 and Arencibia has yet to draw a walk against a RHP, I wouldn't hold your breath for those 70 walks. Here is the # of BB that AL starting catchers have drawn against RHPs so far this year:

- Carlos Santana: 11
- Matt Wieters: 9
- Alex Avila: 8
- Russell Martin: 7
- Mike Napoli: 6
- Chris Iannetta: 6
- A.J. Pierzynski: 5
- Jarrod Saltalamacchia: 4
- Ryan Doumit: 4
- Jose Molina: 2
- Brayan Pena: 2
- Kurt Suzuki: 1
- Miguel Olivo: 1
- J.P. Arencibia: 0
PeteMoss - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 05:34 PM EDT (#256217) #
Well that is an odd statistic to pull...
ayjackson - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 06:16 PM EDT (#256220) #

I made the assumption, and perhaps wrongly, that the rotation worked out in his favor to see these two throw while he was on his way to Minnesota.

Well Lansing really isn't on the way to Minnesota, wherever AA was coming from, unless they were driving...which I doubt.

But seriously, I don't think there's any will to advance the three young arms at Lansing until they've dominated for a few months of 6-inning outings.  That would mean a playoff promotion.  But Lansing will probably be in the playoffs so I think that they'll be there for the duration.

I think what's most likely is that AA likes to see all his best prospects a couple of times a year and this was the week for Lansing.

Kelekin - Friday, May 11 2012 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#256221) #
If Wright keeps this up, I'll finally look good for picking him as my relief sleeper for the past two years.  He should have been in AA last year.
