The Farm went 2 for 3 on strength of Las Vegas hitting and pitching, New Hampshire’s 8th come from behind win and a heartbreaking loss for Lansing.  Despite the loss, Lansing stays on top of the Eastern Division of the Midwest League with a record of 19-8.  Dunedin, with a night off, stayed atop the Northern Division of the Florida State League.  As we go up the organization, New Hampshire holds down the 4th spot in the Eastern League Eastern Division with a 12-15 record. And Las Vegas starts the weekend at 13-16, good for 4th place in the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific South Division.

Las Vegas 11  Salt Lake 3

On a warm evening at Cashman field with 6,686 looking on, the hometown 51s gave the not so busy at the bat Bees a hitting lesson Friday.  Las Vegas Pitching wasn’t so shabby either.  Scott Richmond (3-2) started and delivered 6.0 IP, allowing a run each in the first three innings on five hits total.  He struck out 7 and notched his third win of the year, despite giving up to homers.  Salt Lake finished the last three innings with only a single hit, thanks to relievers Jim Hoey and Jerry Gill.  Yan Gomes (3 for 5, 3H, HR, 3RBI) had a fielding miscue at first base.

Gomes Homered as did Moises Sierra (3 for 5, 3H, 2B, HR, 3RBI) who batted a triple short of the Cycle.  Other multi-run production came from Danny Perales (2 for 3, 2B, 2RBIs, BB).  Adeiny Hechavarria (2 for 5, RBI), Ricardo Nanita (2 for 3, RBI, BB, K) also added RBIs.  Notably, Travis d’Arnaud (1 for 5, K) lengthened his hitting streak to 13 games.

New Hampshire 7  Trenton 5

It took extra innings for our Fisher Cats to dispatch the spawn of the Evil Empire from Trenton.  Starter Chad Jenkins didn’t get the decision, but did go 6.0 IP allowing 3 runs on 8 hits including 2 homers.  Clint Everts (2-0) came on in bottom of the 8th striking out 3 and allowing a single hit. Ryan Goins (5) and Mark Sobelewski (2) each committed a fielding error.

The Fisher Cats brought it home scoring two in the top of the tenth after a Man Mountain Mike McDade (4 for 4, 2B, RBI, BB) doubled and was plated by a single from John Tolisano (2 for 5, RBI, K).  Wi1th two out, Justin Jackson (1 for 4, BB, RBI, K)  scored Sobelewski (2 for 5, k) with a single.  Goins (3 for 5, 2RBI) and John Tolisano (2 for 5, RBI, K) also had a multi-hit game.

Dunedin Day Off

Lansing 8  Great Lakes 9

The Luggies came up short a run short in a hitting fest at Great Lakes.  Starter Marcus Walden (1-1) took the loss early throwing 2.0 IP and allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in the disastrous 2nd inning after dispatching Great Lakes 1-2-3 in the first inning.  Blake McFarland also had tough night, allowing 5 more runs on 7 hits in 5.1 innings.

The Luggies started their scoring on a two-out solo home run by Andrew Burns (2 for 4, HR, RBI).  In Lansing’s biggest inning, the fourth, they came within two, scoring four run runs, but could only manage 1 more run in the eighth.  Kevin Patterson (3 for 5, 2B, RBI, K) had three hits.  Two hits each came from Jonathon Berti (2 for 4, 3B, 3RBI, BB, K), Kevin Pillar (2 for 4, 2B, RBI) while an RBI each came from Kenny Wilson (0 for 4,  RBI)and Pierce Rankin (1 for 5, RBI, 3Ks).

I watched the New Hampshire game last night on MILB. There were no radar guns and the camera angle was the not the greatest.

On Chad Jenkins: Jenkins is a big, burly right hander. He has slimmed down from previous years and looks the type of a major league innings eater. I remember Andrew Tinnish saying as much when Jenkins was drafted and then again when MacGuire was drafted. Jenkins is not going to "wow" you with his pitches or pitching, but he has a nice easy, repeatable delivery with what looks to be a fairly heavy fastball when he works it down at the knees. There's not much movement though. I couldn't really get a handle on his pitches or movement from the camera angle, but hitters don't seem fooled by his overall package of pitches and he did leave a significant amount of pitches elevated and down the middle. He threw four pitches--a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup. The slider seemed to be the pitch he went to get a strikeout, but it's not necessarily a strikeout pitch. For that reason alone I don't think you can ever project anything more than a mid-rotation starter. He also doesn't work fast enough for me. If you've got three or four average offerings, with fairly average command, you've got to play-up your offerings. I wouldn't say he laboured, and he wasn't Steve Trachsel like, but it wasn't methodical. I would've liked him to get the ball and throw as opposed to his throw the ball walk down to the grass, catch it and go back to the rubber after taking off your hat and wiping your brow every other pitch. He does battle and he gets people out so he will pitch in the big leagues, but in terms of success I don't know. For me he's a guy you might not be too hesitant to trade away in a package for an established player and a guy who a bad team might slot into the rotation right away.

Mike McDade - Has tree trunks for legs. He is a big guy and like a Prince Fielder is still quite athletic considering his size. He plays the game hard and had very good at-bats. He was swinging at his pitches and not the pitchers which is something to note in his favour. However, he doesn't center the ball up enough at the moment. You'd like to see him really put a charge into a lot of the pitches he sees that are good offerings, but he fouls a lot of them off. He's got some power in the swing and he might just be a late bloomer in terms of him really realizing his power. The swing seems a bit long with some holes (at least from the left side), but the tools are there and I'm sure he knows he's got to hit some homeruns this year to be in the conversation for a first base gig at the next level. Certainly one to watch.

AJ Jimemez - I think of all the players at AA, Jimenez probably has the look of being a ML the most. He is an excellent defensive catcher. Blocks the ball well, throws well, has feel for the position and looks a good receiver. He's a guy you don't have to worry about back there which is very important. I don't think you'd be far off if you said he might have a career like Carlos Ruiz.

Jon Diaz - is a nice looking short stop who will probably play in the big leagues. He's got good instincts and is fluent at the position. He doesn't possess the strongest of arms, but he makes the routine plays.

I'm sorry if this report lacks substance, the camera angle wasn't the greatest.

I think I saw big leaguer in all these guys. However, all have things to work on before any of them get a call-up or before any of them are "contributing" pieces.

I like Jimenez for the same reasons as Sam describes.

Sanchez/Nicolino are throwing tonight for the Luggies.  Sanchez went 4 innings, and Nicolino has gone 3 so far.  The total damage- 2 hits and no runs.  Neither has allowed an earned run this season.

There were a number of positive stories for the 51s again last night.  Gose and Hechavarria both had good games, and Igarashi closed out the game without blemish.
