The farm club put in some great pitching and OK hitting and came up winning for the evening. Jessie Chavez took his third win for Las Vegas with a brilliant outing and what we could call a “parsimonious” pitching performance. Hats off to the pitching staffs at all levels Friday, allowing only 8 runs in two games while striking out a total of 31.
The 51s heated up Cashman Field with 10 hit 5 run show against Tacoma on a warm (78 F) and cloudy Las Vegas Friday evening. But the real story of the game was the 51s pitching which stepped up and held Tacoma scoreless. Las Vegas starter Jesse Chavez (3-1) threw just 81 pitches in 7.0 IP allowing only two hits and striking out 5. Defensively, Las Vegas turned in a double play in the 7th, mowing down one of Tacoma’s only scoring threats in the game.
Ruban Gotay notched a pair of RBIs, going 2 for 2 with a walk. Danny Perales drove in one and tripled and scored in the third. DH Ricardo Nanita scored 2 and went 3 for three with a BB for a perfect on base night. Travis d’Arnaud was 1 for 4 with an RBI.
On a cold (46 F) and cloudy night, the hometown Fisher Cats opened a long home stand with a low scoring, but happy ending contest with the spawn of the evil empire from Trenton. Starting and winning pitcher Ryan Tepera went 5.0 IP, striking out 4, walking 5 and allowing Trenton’s single run on a pair of hits. Matt Daly, Clint Everts, and saver Ronald Uviedo (his 5th) came on and held Trenton scoreless in the remaining innings. Ryan Goins, at second, had a throwing miscue, his 4th error of the campaign.
New Hampshire managed 8 hits and 3 of them were doubles by John Tolisano who drove in one of the Fisher Cats’ runs. Justin Jackson also scored an RBI on a single in the second.
The D-Jays traveled east on I-4 to Lakeland on a sweaty 87 F evening and came up swinging short to the Flying Tigers whose pitching shut down Dunedin bats with 10 strike outs. Dunedin starter John Stilson turned in a solid 5.0 IP striking out 5 and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. Lakeland put up scores in innings 6, 7, and 8 stinging reliever Dayton Marze (1-1) with his first loss. Defensively, Dunedin nabbed a pair of double plays.
Jake Marisnick went 3 for 4, including a double and an RBI. Marcus Knecht and Gabe Jacobo each turned up RBIs. The D-Jays went scoreless in innings 4 through nine after putting up three in the third.
Taking advantage of the friendly confines of Cooley School of Law Field on a clear chilly 32 F morning, the Luggies’ pitching spaced out two Kane County runs. Starter David Rollins (2-0) took the win striking out 6 and allowing one run on just three hits in an impressive 5.0 IP. Rollins was ably relieved by Kramer Champlin, Javier Avendano, and Ajay Meyer, who combined struck out four more and allowed just one more run on two more hits. Second baseman Jonathon Berti and shortstop Shane Opitz each had defensive miscues at their mid-infield stations.
The Luggies productive bats included a couple of second inning solo homers by lead off hitter K.C. Hobson (2) and later by Andrew Burns (3). Burns led off the 7th with a double and was plated along with Shane Opitz by a Berti single. Hobson and Burns added doubles in the only two multi-hit performances of the game.
