Lansing and Dunedin got the pitching and the wins Monday night.  As for Las Vegas, never mind!

Colorado Springs 14 Las Vegas 2

Las Vegas, NV - This game was over by the second inning when the Rockies affiliate got a trey in the second inning.

Hitting - Everyone except for Ruben Gotay got a hit. Mike McCoy had the only two-hit night, drove in a run and drew a walk. Travis Snider knocked home the other run. Adeiny Hechavarria had a walk while Chris Woodward, David Cooper, Ricardo Nanita and Yan Gomes all had doubles.

Running - Anthony Gose and Hechavarria stole a bag each.

Pitching - Joel Carreno soaked up six innings but was torched for eight runs on a dozen hits (including two homers) with a walk.  He struck out three and got eight ground ball outs.  Lefty Bill Murphy fared even worse as he was whacked for six runs (four earned) in one inning thanks to five hits (including a long bomb) and a walk while whiffing a pair.  Jim Hoey struck out one in a perfect frame and Jerry Gil overcame a pair of hits and a walk to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Defence - Gotay and Hechavarria were charged with clanks while manning the middle infield.

Dunedin 5 Tampa 3

Tampa, FL - The D-Jays overcame a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the top of the eighth to beat the Yankees.

Hitting - Kevin Nolan led the attack with two hits and had Dunedin's lone extra-base knock.  The bottom of the order brought home the runs as Kevin Ahrens brought home one despite going hitless.  He did draw a pair of free passes.  Kenen Baili and Jack Murphy each had one hit and two RBI nights with Baili also getting a walk.  Ryan Schimpf and Jon Talley heard ball four twice while Michael Crouse, Marcus Knecht and Gabe Jacobo heard it once.

Running - Nothing but a zero in the stolen base department.

Pitching - Lefty Sean Nolin was just one out shy of a quality start by going 5 2/3 innings and surrendering three runs on six hits and a walk.  He gave up a home run but punched out five.  Dustin Antolin was the winner by pitching 2 1/3 scoreless frames and was only nicked for a hit and a walk.  Danny Barnes worked a one-hit ninth for his eighth save.

Defence - Knecht made an error in left.  Ahrens, Schimpf and Jacobo converted a 5-4-3 double play.

Lansing 7 Peoria 3

Peoria, IL - The Lugnuts scored the first five runs of the game to come away with a win over the Cubs affiliate.

Hitting - Kevin Pillar had a three-hit game and Carlos Perez was on base three times with a triple and a walk while scoring three times.  Chris Hawkins pushed his average to .359 by also getting aboard three times with two hits and a walk.  Jonathon Berti had two hits and brought home a run.  Kellen Sweeney singled, walked and had an RBI.  K.C. Hobson had a double and Andrew Burns walked.  Kenny Wilson was hitless in his five ABs.

Running - Berti and Pillar swiped second base once.

Pitching - Marcus Walden scattered just one hit and two walks over five shutout frames for the win.  He rung up four Ks and his groundout/flyout total was 10-1.  Javier Avendano allowed an unearned run over three innings and like Walden, gave up just one hit while compiling a 4-2 K/BB ratio.  Ajay Meyer surrendered two runs on three hits in one inning but did punch out a batter.

Defence - Perez made a throwing error behind the plate and was 0-for-2 throwing out baserunners with Avendano on the hill.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Carlos Perez, Lansing

2. Sean Nolin, Dunedin

1. Marcus Walden, Lansing

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Hech has been making quite a few errors.  Not Gustavo Pierre-level, but a few.  Is there reason to be concerned about his D? Or is he just lacking defense at 1B or trying too hard?

Whiterasta80,

I don't know if this is the definite reason but I do know that the infield in Vegas is extremely hard due to the environment there and is very difficult to field on.  My bet would be that this has something to do with it.  Also, I know that Hech has incredible range and often gets to balls that others can't get to...so in a few instances he'd be better off putting the ball in his back pocket, whereas he has a tendency to try and make the unbelievable play and might make an ill advised throw.  I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Still no scouting report on Javier Avendano?
Gerry - Tuesday, April 24 2012 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#255035) #

I will have a scouting report on Avendano by next week.  I have heard that he has a very good breaking ball but, like Joel Carreno, he has to be "encouraged" to use his fastball more.

The Lugnuts have a day game today.  Aaron Sanchez got the start and pitched three shutout innings, one hit, three walks, seven K's.  Nicolino is on to pitch now.

Thanks Gerry! The 3 guys we took in the Rule 5 Draft last year Jacobo, Avendano and Hector Alvarez look really interesting. I don't buy the "they're just placeholders til the big guys get promoted". AA even said it himself that they were targeting high upside guys in the Rule 5 Draft last year. Jacobo made his first appearance yesturday so that only leaves Hector Alvarez yet to make his debut in our minors. Anyone know where he's gonna start this year or if he'll be returned to his original team?

BTW, Kevin Goldstien tweeted last night that he spoke to a scout who had some strong opinions on the Jays' arms at low A...some good, some bad.  I haven't seen if he's posted anything yet.

IIRC Hector Alvarez, based on age and previous experience, is the sort of guy you would expect to see on a short-season team.
Bluefield maybe?

I think Goldstein may have it up now AY.  The criticism is more around the guys only throwing three innings rather than anything with their performance.  They are saying it is hard to get a read on what these guys actually are when they are having such short stints.

Yeah I would think so too. Either Bluefield or the Golf Coast League. And either Santiago Nessy or Aaron Munoz sent to Low A Vancouver.

Could someone please explain to me how does the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft works. I know the rules for the major league but when is a player eligible for the minor league phase and on which level does he need to play? I saw they were all taken in the AAA phase and Avendano is now playing in low A? And he was only with STL for 3 or 4 years instead of the usual 5 years.

I saw when Goldstein tweeted that he spoke to a scout about the Lansing starters, but never saw the followup. Where can I find it?

Selection eligibility

Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization's 40-man roster and:

– were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or

– were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.

These exemption periods (one year longer than those in effect previously) went into effect as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in October 2006. The change took effect immediately, exempting many players from the 2006 Rule 5 draft even though they had been signed in some cases more than four years before the new agreement came into effect. Prior to the rule change, players were exempt from the first two or three Rule 5 drafts held after their signing (regardless of the year they were drafted), rather than from the first three or four Rule 5 drafts after their signing.

Cost and example

To prevent excessive turnover in the minor league levels, each draftee costs $50,000. If the draftee does not stay on the selecting team's 25-man (major league) roster all season, the player must be offered back to his original team at half-price. Organizations may also draft players from AA or lower to play for their AAA affiliates (for $12,000) and may draft players from A teams or lower to play for their AA affiliates (for $4,000).

The Rule 5 draft has opened opportunities for teams to take other teams' top prospects who may not be ready for the major leagues. A prominent recent example is Johan Santana, who was chosen in the 1999 Rule 5 draft by the Florida Marlins when the Houston Astros declined to put him on their 40-man roster. The Marlins traded Santana to the Minnesota Twins in a pre-arranged deal for cash and Jared Camp who was taken in that same rule 5 draft by the Twins immediately before Florida chose Santana.

The Twins kept Santana on their roster for the 2000 season, despite the pitcher's subpar performance that season (6.49 earned run average) which was unsurprising given his youth and inexperience. After the 2000 season, the Twins had the right to option Santana to their minor league system, but chose not to in 2001. He was briefly optioned to AAA at the start of the 2002 season. He returned that year to the major leagues and established himself as an above-average pitcher. Since 2004, Santana has won two Cy Young awards. Santana had not played above low A ball before being chosen in the Rule 5 draft, and he likely would not have made his major league debut until at least the 2001 or the 2002 season with the Astros, if at all.
