The teams with winning records won, and the teams with losing records lost. Lansing got more great pitching and recorded another shutout. Dave Rollins got the start for the Lugnuts. There were many suggested names for that starting spot in Lansing and the selection of Rollins was a bit of a surprise, but the Jays staff know what they are doing. Dunedin had to score eight runs to win as Sean Nolin had an off night.
Chad Jenkins had another bad start and his name, along with Deck McGuire's, has dispappeared from the list for fifth starter in Toronto. New Hampshire were in a deep hole early from which they had little hope of escaping. Las Vegas have had some tough losses this season and yesterdays was another one to add to the list. They tied their game in the top of the ninth and then brought on their best reliever so far this season, Ryoto Igarashi, to hold the lead. He couldn't and the 51's lost again.
The 51's had to face ex-teammate Brad Mills who limited them to one run over seven innings. Mills only gave up four hits. Two of them came in the second and accounted for the only run off Mills. Moises Sierra singled and Yan Gomes doubled him home. That was it for the 51's until the ninth inning. Facing a 2-1 deficit, David Cooper led off with a single and again Gomes doubled home a run. The 51's were unable to get Gomes home and Ryota Igarashi and his zero ERA came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth. A single and a one out double off the bat of Ryan Langerhans ended the game.
Sierra and Gomes had two hits each. Travis Snider was 1-3 with a walk. Gose, d'Arnaud and Hechavarria were hitless. The 51's used six pitchers, the starter was Bill Murphy who was pulled in the fourth inning.
Chad Jenkins was hit around the "pahk", and was done after pitching 2.2 innings. Jenkins gave up eight runs on nine hits, five of which were line drives. Jenkins has struggled so far in 2012 and obviously needs to correct some things in his delivery or performance. jenkins pitched well in spring training and in AA last season so this appears to be a blip of some kind.
The Fisher Cats were down 10-1 headed to the seventh and it took five late runs to make the score semi-respectable. The Fisher Cats did have eleven hits. Ryan Goins had three including a double and a triple. Justin Jackson and Jon Diaz had two each. Brad Glenn and Mark Sobolewski had solo home runs.
Sean Nolin was the FSL pitcher of the week last week, I don't think he will be this week. Nolin pitched just four innings and was tagged for five runs, four earned, on six hits.
Nolin was bailed out by the Jays offense. The Cubs sent former first round pick Hayden Simpson to the mound and the Jays scored three runs off him in both the second and third innings. Jack Murphy hit a home run in the second inning, Michael Crouse and Keenan Bailli had RBI doubles in the third. Bailli doubled in another in the fifth and Jon Talley doubled in the final run in the seventh. Talley and Bailli finished with two hits each.
Dayton Marze, Boomer Potts and Danny Barnes pitched in relief and maintained their zero ERA's.
More great pitching led the Lugnuts to another win. Dave Rollins didn't get the win, he was pulled after 4.1 innings and seven strikeouts. Brandon Berl and Tyler Ybarra combined for 4.2 hitless innings in relief.
Kevin Pillar and Kevin Patterson scored the first two runs thanks to a two out error. Kenny Wilson scored the third run on a sac fly by KC Hobson. The Lugnuts had just six hits, two by Wilson.
