The affiliates did very well in towns beginning with Dayton.  Everywhere else, not so much.

Fresno 9 Las Vegas 3

Las Vegas, NV - Like the parent club, the 51s pissed away a 2-0 lead against the Giants affiliate but they at least had the decency to do it in the early going.

Hitting - Travis Snider (1/4) hit a two-run double to give Las Vegas the early lead in the third.  Moises Sierra (1/4) hit a solo homer in the ninth for his second of the year.  David Cooper was 2-for-3 with a walk and Adeiny Hechavarria went 2-for-4.  Ricardo Nanita, Chris Woodward and Mike McCoy were all 1-for-4 with Nanita hitting a double.  Anthony Gose went 1-for-5 but Travis d'Arnaud was hitless in four trips to the dish and is now hitting .067 on the season.

Running - Hechavarria collected his first stolen base of the season.

Pitching - Scott Richmond was roughed up for seven runs on nine hits (one HR), a walk and hit a batter over five frames while collecting a trio of Ks.  Like poor Richmond, Andrew Carpenter was nailed for a home run by Joaquin Arias and allowed another ball over the fence over his three innings of work.  He gave up two more hits but struck out a batter.  Jerry Gil yielded a hit but punched out a pair of batters in a shutout frame.

Defence - Nothing under the "E" column for the 51s.

Reading 5 New Hampshire 2

Reading, PA - The Fisher Cats led 2-1 but a pair of two-run innings by the Phillies in the third and sixth handed New Hampshire its second loss in a row.

Hitting - Justin Jackson (3/4) had an RBI triple and finished a home run short of the cycle.  Mike McDade and Brad McElroy had 2-for-4 nights and Brad Glenn (1/4) had an RBI single.  Jonathan Diaz (0/3) drew two walks while Ryan Goins (0/3) and A.J. Jimenez (0/4) were issued a free pass.  Kevin Howard was 0-for-5 and Mark Sobolewski was 0-4.

Running - Diaz stole second and third base to push his season total to five and McElroy stole his first bag of 2012.

Pitching - Lefty Brett Cecil took the loss by giving up five runs (four earned)  over 6 2/3 innings.  He allowed a homer to Canadian Tyson Gillies among his 11 hits and hit a batter but he struck out seven without walking anyone.  Seven of his 10 outs in play were not airborne and 74 of his 91 pitches were strikes.  Lefty Evan Crawford surrendered one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless frames.

Defence
- Cecil threw one away that led to his unearned run and Goins booted one but he did start a 6-3 double play with McDade.  Jimenez was unable to throw out a base thief.

Dunedin 8 Daytona 7

Daytona Beach, FL - The D-Jays led 6-0 at one point before hanging on to beat the Cubs.

Hitting - Marcus Knecht (2/4) and Jonathan Jones (3/5) did most of the damage in this one.  Knecht had a pair of two-run doubles with a walk while Jones contributed a two-run single.  Jake Marisnick (2/5) had a double and a walk in the leadoff spot.  Sean Ochinko, Jon Talley and Kevin Ahrens turned in 1-for-4 efforts with a walk while Ryan Schimpf went 1-for-5.  Kevin Nolan (0/3) climbed aboard twice on ball four and Michael Crouse (0/4) also reached base via the walk.  In summary, every Dunedin batter reached first base.

Running - Marisnick stole his first base of the year and Crouse nabbed his second.  Ochinko was cut down at third by the left fielder and Schimpf was pegged at the plate by the right fielder.

Pitching - Sam Dyson got the win by lasting six innings in which he yielded four runs (three earned) on six hits, including a homer, and hit a batter.  He also uncorked a wild pitch but he whiffed four, did not walk anyone and nine of his 14 outs in play were on terra firma.  Dustin Antolin was whacked around for three runs on three hits and a walk over 2/3 of an inning.  Lefty Boomer Potts stranded an Antolin runner and struck out one in 2/3 of a scoreless frame.  Like Potts, Dayton Marze also retired the only two men he faced to earn a hold.  Danny Barnes worked a one-hit ninth to get his second save.

Defence
- Schmipf botched one at second, Dyson chucked one away from the mound and Ahrens did likewise from third.  Like Cecil, Dyson's throwing error led to his unearned run.  Nolan, Schimpf and Talley completed a 6-4-3 double play. Ochinko was 0-for-2 in trying to throw out basestealers.

Lansing 8 Dayton COB!

Dayton, OH - The Lugnuts drew first blood in the first and scored a converted touchdown in innings three through six to leave the Dragons seeing Red.

Hitting - Kenny Wilson (1/3) gave the Lugnuts the only run they would need with a leadoff home run and he also managed a couple of walks.  Chris Hawkins (3/4) and K.C. Hobson (3/5) were the hit leaders with Hawkins launching a homer and drawing a walk while Hobson belted a double and knocked three runs in.  Kevin Pillar (2/3) had a two-bagger and an RBI.  Kellen Sweeney (1/3) and Carlos Perez (1/3) also got on base by earning a ball four. Andrew Burns doubled and Jorge Vega-Rosado singled in five at-bats.  Every Lansing batter got at least one safety.

Running - Burns stole third base but Sweeney was nailed trying to fetch second.  Hobson was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

Pitching - Lefty Justin Nicolino delivered three scoreless innings and did not allow a hit or a walk.  He faced just two batters over the minimum with one runner reaching on an error and the other was the result of a hit by pitch.  Nicolino struck out five and four of his five outs in play did not leave the infield.  The winning pitcher was Aaron Sanchez, who scatted a hit and two walks over three innings while racking up four Ks.  Blake McFarland limited the Reds affiliate to two hits over two scoreless frames and Brandon Berl finished up with a one-walk ninth.

Defence - Vega-Rosado booted one and threw one away at short.  Sanchez picked off a runner at first.  Perez was 0-for-2 in trying to stop the Dayton running game.

Diaz having 5 SBs and presumably a green light has to be quite the surprise.
mamboon - Tuesday, April 10 2012 @ 09:20 AM EDT (#254210) #
Last year Diaz had 15 SB in 19 games at LV before he was severely injured in a car accident. His greenlight this year should be no suprise.

Perhaps an honourable mention to Nicolino? Sounds as though he's picking up right where he left off last year (ie, more pitching brilliance).

Hechevarria just hasn't stopped hitting since leaving AA, and that includes MLB spring training. And apparently he was lining the ball all over the field in minor league camp as well.

We may be able to legitimately start hoping that he may have turned the corner offensively, IMO.

Diaz is going to be a nice utility infielder if reports on his defense are true. JMac wasn't slow but you couldn't pinch run with him and tell him to go grab you a bag.

I bring this up often because I don't want it forgotten - he was also pounding the ball for almost 3 weeks before he left AA. I dunno if there was a mechanical adjustment, or it was just a hot streak, or what accounts for it.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Hech, but it should be noted that the reports (for example, from Keith Law and Kevin Goldstein) on his hitting progress from the AFL and this spring weren't all that great. Nobody's writing him off - just noting that he's still very much a work in progress (offensively, at least).
uglyone - Tuesday, April 10 2012 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#254237) #
apparently Hech was ripping it up in minor league camp too, after getting dropped from the big camp.

It will be interesting to see how many runs the Vegas team allows this year.  That is a terrible pitching staff, and in that park, they may set some records.

Hech was a skinny kid when he defected from Cuba. After a couple years of North American food and proper weight training, it's quite plausible that he's become stronger and his hitting has consequently improved. This spring, Farrell commented that Hech seemed stronger.

@Mamboon: He had 2 SB in Las Vegas last year.  He had 15 walks.

He certainly looks like he has a chance to hit major league hitting which you can't say for his Cuban counterpart in Iglesias.

Coming into tonight, there were only four undefeated teams in the minors: High Desert (A+, Mariners), Lynchburg (A+, Braves), Reading (AA, Phillies) and our Lansing Lugnuts.

High Desert and Reading are both 5-0, and our Fisher Cats will be facing Reading tonight.  Can Lansing keep the streak alive? I imagine Syndergaard and/or Desclafani are going tonight.

Another question is what Lansing is planning to do with the pitching staff.  They were talking on the Lugnuts broadcast about whether or not they are intending to do a "trios" system.  I can't say I'm a huge fan of the system, since I believe you want to see what your pitchers can do outside of the first time through the order.  How a pitcher handles a batting staff the 2nd time and 3rd time through is just as important.  That being said, I don't think they're actually going to do this, and they're probably just trying to keep their innings low early in the season.

I wouldn't mind seeing the tandem system we had last year.  But I do hope they don't cap our Lansing SPs to 5 innings, I hope they do start letting them go to 6 if they have good starts.

Jesse Hernandez is getting the start it looks like.

TamRa - Tuesday, April 10 2012 @ 09:56 PM EDT (#254254) #
my expectations for Hernandez were not on the radar but he's off to a shiny start. Ditto for Kevin Nolan.
Kelekin - Tuesday, April 10 2012 @ 10:17 PM EDT (#254255) #
Hernandez is the filler 5th starter and he'd need to have another 10 starts like this to be on anyone's radar, but boy was it a good one.  8 strikeouts, 13 groundouts, zero fly-outs.

Nolan is hugely under-rated.  Possibly his defensive ability is lacking, but I'd like to see him in AA soon.
TamRa - Tuesday, April 10 2012 @ 10:24 PM EDT (#254256) #
so far they are using Ybarra in relief? is he not projected as a starter?

The Luggies are limiting the youngsters innings early. Once the weather breaks they are going to stretch them out.

I don't think the others were suggesting Hech's a finished product, but just pointing out some positives to be hopeful for. Not sure why we need to take into account quotes from Law or Goldstein who base their opinions based on seeing a prospect a couple of innings or talks to scouts who watches a couple of innings. And Law can be quite biased towards a prospect after he makes up his mind.
TheBunk - Wednesday, April 11 2012 @ 12:56 AM EDT (#254266) #
Great point at the end. The complaints against Law on perceived team bias are off base but he does have a tendency to make up his mind about a prospect and then put his blinders on.

They have now had 6 different pitchers start games. The 2nd best ERA among those 6 starters is 9.82 and only 3 of the 6 sport an ERA under 15.00.

I will always take an outsider opinion over a Jays coach.  One is paid to tell you things a certain way, the other is paid to tell you how they see it.
TamRa - Wednesday, April 11 2012 @ 03:38 AM EDT (#254273) #
Tom Signore was quoted on Phoul Ballz (sp?) as saying that the team (and he) felt Cecil's issue was arm strength and they had developed a program to re-build that.

Which sounds to me like a rather long-term project. i don't think we're going to see him back any-time soon, even if he shows some good results between the lines.
