I thought this was a great interview, and not just for the Toronto content. In this interview Dirk talks about the tough time he had in Toronto with half of the Jays roster. He is currently working on his third book which will cover his time in Toronto and he is very mad at some Blue Jays. The interview suggests the stress caused Dirk to self medicate to some extent and get into a very difficult personal situation. It's worth the read.

How were you received by the players in Toronto given your reputation as an author?

It was a 50/50 split. There was a bunch of great guys on the team, class acts. That was a really wonderful team as far as all the upscale personalities. Halladay was fantastic — he didn’t speak much but when he did he was always classy, and you just had a bunch of guys that were really cool. Vernon Wells, the year that I got there, was just getting flogged by the media, because there’s an example of a guy who signed a big contract, he’s got a lot of money but he’s not producing. He did a lot of charity work and he was very active and he was a good guy.

But then you had guys that were jackasses. And every team has them. These are the guys that look at baseball as a religious thing, and you never break the code. And nobody knows where the code came from, but you just can’t break it. So here comes Dirk Hayhurst, fringy guy on a search for meaning and purpose and maybe big-league fame if I could get it, and I’m just writing down stories and asking big, uncomfortable questions about the validity of our existence as ballplayers, and guys were not happy about that. And as long as you’re playing well, they’re not going to call you out about it, and I was pitching well. But then I got hurt and the gloves came off, and it was like, “Dirk, you need to apologize to the team. You need to bring everybody together and tell them you’re out of line for what you’re doing.”

I'm guessing everyone is wondering who the guy is that Hayhurst wants to name due to being a royal ... hrm ... what word to use on a family friend site ... but won't. It would have to be a Jay in 2009 and 2010 and not Wells as he seems to have good words for him. It would almost certainly be a regular or pitcher who gets regular turns (rotation or late innings). Should be an interesting book in a year or so.

Not really related but only 8 of those players still remain from 2010. That's crazy!

or 9, if I knew how to count.

This is a good interview. Thanks.  I wonder if Hayhurst has spoken with Dave Bidini - Toronto writer/musician/author who also played in Italy and wrote a fine book about it.

Not just Italy, either; the team Bidini followed around is the same team Hayhurst is going to be playing for. Well, I think it is; same town, anyway. (Nettuno.)

Exactly. If Baseball America had a Top 150 or Top 200 list, the Jays would easily outpace the Orioles. Toronto's system isn't heavy at the top, it's just deep. I'd also trade Toronto's four for Baltimore's three, I think, everything else being equal. I like all of the prospects on the list for the Jays, but Machado's bat could be quite special, even if he winds up at 3B.

Wrong thread. Whoops.

I'd be shocked if it was Marcum, but youneverknow.

What that interview is (among other things) is a fantastic reminder that no, we fans do NOT really know what 's going on in the team. Next time I wonder why something was done, I'll remember this interview.

Agreed that this was a really good read.

Again, you never know, but I would suspect that there were likely at least one or two veteran players involved in the anti-Hayhurst crowd. It's not easy to tell from the interview if that was an exact quote that Hayhurst just refused to attribute or if that was shorthand for the attitude he was receiving from some players. However, if someone said something like that to him, I would suspect it would be a veteran player (or coach) of some tenure. I have a hard time thinking a fringe player trying to establish himself in the majors, like Roenicke or Ruiz, would take it upon themselves to be an arbiter of clubhouse atmosphere. To me, that seems much more likely to have come from someone like Downs or Overbay.

However, as katman said, youneverknow.

My money's on Greg Zaun, spent part of 2009 with the Jays IIRC.

Dirk was on the Fan 590 last evening and that interview is available for listening or download on their website.

Of note is how we are all speculating on who the 'problem child' is on the team - the guy who would tear down someone who is hurt. Now think about why some of the guys would look down on a writer in the clubhouse. If you were a player on a team and knew Hayhurst had wrote a book, was working on a second and now is on his 3rd (Jays days) with a 4th likely (about his Italian adventures) along with more after that (Japan? Korea? Australia? Coaching somewhere?) how nervous would you be about it?

It is easy to see why players think little of having someone write these books. Of course, nowadays with twitter and the like (it is amazing what Snider eats - when he retires someday he'll blow up like a balloon) one could figure players will cut back a bit on the fear of writers as many do it now.

FYI: Twittering Jays...

I'm sure there are many others (minor and major league).

Texas seems to be taking a lawnmower to the Jays artificial turf .  First outbidding the Jays for many of the high end IFA talent, then Yu Darvish, then the Niagara Falls/Venezuelan 'State of the Franchise' embarrassment and now signing Blue Jay icon Tony Fernandez as Special Assistant to Ranger GM Jon Daniels .

"My money's on Greg Zaun, spent part of 2009 with the Jays IIRC."

Kinda off topic, but I listend to Zauny on PTS (on the site) last night and I was struck, not for the first time, at how unprepared Zaun seems to comment.

There were spots he commented after admitting he hadn't kept up, spots where he said things that were flat out wrong, spots where he said the team would do poorly because it was trying to do X when Farrell is on record everywhere saying they are committed to doing Y....even calling players by the wrong name.

Why odes the guy get paid to give his opinion again? (particularly when he's pretty darn negative)
BalzacChieftain - Wednesday, February 22 2012 @ 03:13 PM EST (#252142) #

I have found that Zaun's analysis on anything other than in-game events (which he can relate to) is downright preposterous and ill-informed.
