Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports that Bobby Valentine will be named Red Sox manager. "Valentine was offered the job Tuesday and accepted it. Valentine, who appeared at a charity event in Japan on Monday, is scheduled to fly back home at midnight ET Wednesday."

Always enjoyed Valentine. A very fun manager to watch as he always tries different things. Back in the 80's he had his pitchers throwing footballs regularly to try to strengthen their arms. He sent Bobby Witt (a pitcher) up to hit when the other team had a hitter pitching in a blowout. Stuff like that just adds to the game imo.
I have been hearing about Valentine off and on for years. I remember his playing career being cut short by injury and his later career as a manager, and I was left with one impression - people don't like him for very long. He's always reminded me of Billy Martin in that he's an interesting personality, but ... .
