The affiliates went 1 and 1 in their playoff matchups despite two starters combining to allow 1 run while striking out 15 in 10 innings.

Richmond 5 at New Hampshire 7

The Fisher Cats squared things against their arch-rivals (maybe), the Flying Squirrels. Nestor Molina took the mound and actually walked a batter in his five innings. He did strike out 8, though that slightly lowered his K/BB ratio on the year (seriously.) Molina was on the hook for only one of the Squirrel runs, and allowed only three hits, and got twice as many outs on the ground (4) as in the air (2). Ronnie Uviedo pitched a scoreless sixth and Clint Everts a scoreless 1.2, but Evan Crawford and Bobby Korecky combined to give up the other 4 runs in only 1.1 innings. That still left the F-Cats comfortably ahead as their bats exploded for 11 hits while drawing five walks.

Kevin Howard and newly acquired Fisher Cat Colby Rasmus led the way with 3 and 2 hits, respectively, with Rasmus walking and scoring twice and Howard doubling twice and driving in two. Danny Perales also had two hits, while Anthony Gose had only one hit but made the most of it, doubling with two outs in the second to put New Hampshire ahead for good. He also walked and for good measure stole second and third. Moises Sierra was 1 for 5, while Travis d'Arnaud managed a walk in five plate appearances.

Quad Cities 4 at Lansing 2

Lansing fell about three cities short in the series opener, losing 4-2 to Quad Cities despite an impressive start from Sean Nolin. Nolin went a scoreless five, and while he did allow two hits and three walks he struck out seven. Dustin Antolin and Daniel Webb didn't fare quite as well though, giving up 1 and 3 runs respectively in the 7th and 8th. The eventual winning run scored after a one out throwing error allowed a runner to reach was followed by a home run, and the insurance run plated after a doubled scored a runner who had singled and taken second on another bad throw.

Lansing would mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, getting runners on second and third with two out, but Markus Brisker couldn't provide any late game heroics. Lansing did outhit Quad Cities 10-7 but those two errors proved costly. The 1-2 hitters, Jonathan Jones and Peter Mooney, had two of those hits apiece, while Oliver Dominguez did them one better and went 3 for 4 while stealing a base.

3 Stars!
3rd Star! Kevin Howard - 3/4, 2 2B, 2 RBI
2nd Star! Nestor Molina - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
1st Star! Sean Nolin - 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K

The game log probably didn't do this one justice.  It was a fantastic game.  Nolin loaded the bases in the fourth with no one out and struck out the side to get out of it.  He struck out the side in both the second and the fourth actually.

Both errors that Lansing made scored and that was the difference.  The problems with throwing from short stop showed it's ugly head and this time it cost them.

As far as the Brisker AB in the ninth, he smoked it.  The ball was within an eye lash of falling in and tieing that game up.  He chased the CF back to the track in the straight away center and Longmire made a good over the shoulder catch.  The QC center fielder and second baseman are pretty solid.

They have to play a clean game but Lansing can even this thing up tonight.  Marisnick has to get going a little bit too.  He is 3-20 in the playoffs right now.

I cannot keep track of all our pitching prospects. I completely forgot about S Nolan. I hope he really is a prospect worthy of being compared to those other guys. The list is so long.
LF if you were impressed with him that is good news.

I have been very impressed with Nolin's last four or five starts in paticular.  I feel bad for him because he started both games the Luggies lost in the playoffs.  The first one, the pen let him down and last night, it wasn't so much the pen as it was the defense and I would say the offense let him down a bit too as they had opportunities to score.

These two teams in the MWL are very evenly matched and I would not be shocked to see this one go the full five actually.  It has been one hell of a ride.

You are right LF.  Over his last six starts Nolin has 43K's in 32.2 innings.  He has given up 24 hits and ten walks in those starts.

He is ready for Dunedin next season.

I saw Nolin in action last year at Auburn. He's really come along. In that start he was 84-87 and didn't really either have command and any secondary offerings. He was really out of shape and had a Jason Jennings type body.

Most reports now say he's increased his velocity and really slimmed down. So I think you really have to credit the player as he's taken being a professional very seriously and gotten himself in shape and ready to pitch.

Travs d'Arnaud has been officially named as the Blue Jays only representative on team USA for the World Cup.

Am I the only one who's nose has been bent out of place by Gose losing his CF position in the play-offs to Rasmus?

Why would they let Rasmus into their play-offs at all? Ironically, Rasmus is replacing the guy who is going to replace him in the Show. I'll be delighted the day Gose comes up and Rasmus is moved to LF, or the bench, if he can't beat out Thames and or Snider - and I'm not sure Colby can beat out those two guys.

What goes around comes around.

That selfish Colby Rasmus....needing to see live pitching & game action before returning to the Jays.
The nerve.

Mylegacy, I thought it was you who wanted Colby Rasmus.

I don't have a crystal ball, but do you think there may be discussion on Batters Box about who should be the CF for the Jays in 2013 & 2014.

Its Rasmus's to keep or lose.

Its time to produce something other than headlines.

Will be fun to watch.

greenfrog - Thursday, September 15 2011 @ 09:21 PM EDT (#244033) #
Rasmus could do worse than emulating Ellsbury's approach at the plate. Which includes going the other way from time to time. Radical concept, I know.

Speaking of the BoSox, I'm really impressed with the way Hellickson has shut them down tonight. Good stuff, good control and command, and excellent composure - even when his perfect 3-2 strike to Pedroia with two on (a precision fastball on the outside corner) was called a ball, thereby loading the bases. Classic example of the Sox getting a ridiculously favourable call. Hellickson pitched out of it anyway.

Excuse the diversion - but I just love it when I watch the Red Sox and the Yankees lose.

(I just had to get that out of my system.)

Schadenfreude is not usually thought of as a positive character trait, except when it involves the Yankees or Red Sox.

I'm 100% behind the Rays. I dislike the Red Sox.

Basically the Rays have to win Friday (Shields vs Beckett) and Sunday (Price vs Wakefield). The Red Sox have a big advantage on Saturday (Niemann vs Lester). Winning tonight is big for the Rays - pretty much a must-win game for them. Gotta take three of four minimum. Even that might not be enough with so few games remaining.

My wife hates the Rays, because they keep whuppin our asses. But I can't. I  hate losing to them, but I both respect and admire them as an organization. There are 2 baseball teams I absolutely despise and that's the Yankees and Red Sox.
greenfrog - Thursday, September 15 2011 @ 11:23 PM EDT (#244040) #
The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that the Rays have to sweep this series, because the Red Sox have a major scheduling advantage over the Rays *after* this series:

- Boston: 7 games against Baltimore, 3 against NYY
- TB: 7 games against NYY, 3 against Toronto

Given that discrepancy, I just don't see how the Rays are going to come out on top, unless they play otherworldly baseball for the next couple of weeks, and Boston tanks some games against Baltimore. The one hope the Rays can cling to is that they can rely on solid starting pitching throughout, which is more than Boston can say.
Matthew E - Thursday, September 15 2011 @ 11:44 PM EDT (#244041) #
I have no fondness for the Rays. But I will say this for them: they are not part of the problem. I'd rather see them win than Boston or New York.

I think just the opposite of mylegacy (with really not a bit more evidence) - my guess is that Colby Rasmus is such an important player on this team that Gose will eventually be traded. The outfielder in our system who will push Rasmus or anyone else out of the outfield is Marisnick.

In my totally arbitrary opinion.

krose - Friday, September 16 2011 @ 01:18 AM EDT (#244044) #
The BJ's future outfield could be Rasmus, Marisnick and Gose.
uglyone - Friday, September 16 2011 @ 02:25 AM EDT (#244045) #
I like the look of that future OF.

but screw the Rays....GO ANGELS!!!
John Northey - Friday, September 16 2011 @ 12:50 PM EDT (#244059) #
Of course, if the Yanks blow it vs the Rays I could see conspiracies coming out of Boston. In fact, the moment NY plays anyone who isn't likely to start in the playoffs Boston (or their fans) will be screaming.
