Just one game on the docket Monday night, but oh what a game.

Fort Wayne 7 at Lansing 8

Man, would it have been fun to be at this game. Up 6-2 in the 6th, the Luggies saw their lead evaporate when Fort Wayne came storming back with three in the 7th and another in the 8th to tie it up. A half-inning later, Carlos Perez hit his second triple of the evening and came home on a sac fly to tie the game. Just when the Lugs thought they were ahead for good, the TinCaps tied it right back up in the top of the 9th. Then, the bottom of the 9th, tie ball game.

Oliver Dominguez led off the inning and promptly doubled, setting up a sac bunt. Peter Mooney walked, possibly the unintentional intentional variety, to set up the double play. TinCaps pitcher and Minors Moniker Madness contestant Kevin Quackenbush then issued a walk of the intentional intentional variety, this to Jake Marisnick. Michael Crouse was next up, and completed the trifecta of walk types, working a definite unintentional unintentional for, yes, the walk-off walk. Or, the series-off walk.

Aaron Sanchez got the start for Lansing and pitched well. The righty allowed two runs in four innings, and struck out two. The bullpen was shaky at times but was bailed out by the bats.

Oliver Dominguez, who scored the winning run, also hit a three-run homer. Carlos Perez hit those two triples and drew a walk.

With the win, Lansing moves to the championship and will play Quad Cities in a five-gamer.

Three Stars!
3. Michael Crouse - walk-off walk
2. Carlos Perez - 2 3B, BB
1. Oliver Dominguez - 2B, HR, series-winning run

Glad to see the Jays' minor-league coaches are emphasizing OBP :)

Aron Sanchez has really come on lately. Go Lugnuts.

Last night was probably the second best game of the year that I have been too.  Friday was a tick higher on my scale.  Last night, I never was really concerned and still wouldn't have been if they would have lost, because they would have played today.  Friday was an elimination game.  Just think, this team was one strike away from being swept in the first round.

Quad City will be a tough series and they will be coming to Lansing for the first time all year, so it should be interesting.  Just another playoff game in Lansing.

Lugnut Fan ... any Syndergaard updates ?  He hasn't pitched since his 19th birthday and there was some speculation that he was transfered to the Vancouver roster to avoid the Lansing disabled list.  It was great to see Sanchez  join Nicolino and Syndergaard with a successful Midwestern League debut.
Gerry - Tuesday, September 13 2011 @ 01:37 PM EDT (#243816) #
I had heard that Syndergaard hit his innings limit.    Syndergaard is at 59 innings, Nicolino was at 61 before the playoffs, Sanchez was at 54 pre-playoffs.   They are all around the same number.  I don't know how the Jays track it, innings or pitches, or if they look at types of deliveries, but I had heard, unofficially, that he was at his limit.

Hutchison has been shut down now too, according to Dave Gershen(sp?)  on Twitter - he was shifted (on paper) to Dunedin for Frank Gailey.

One assumes McGuire will step into his rotation spot?

Hutch finished with 68.2 last year (so apparently that ~60-70 area is what they target for the first full year after HS)

He more than doubled that this year Molina is also 60% higher this year than his previous high.

Chad Jenkins starts game 1 of the Eastern league final tonight for the Fisher Cats.  Jenkins was outstanding in his previous playoff start.

Colby Rasmus starts in CF pushing Gose to LF.

Does anyone else wonder why they're bothering to give Rasmus rehab starts in AA as we're playing out the string in september? Why isn't he just up here with the big club?

Keep in mind these are just the MILB innings, these guys also pitched in extended.

The Jays lineup against Boston features some interesting choices:  Cooper, Loewen, Woodward and McCoy.  Nice for us prospect-watchers to get another look at Cooper and Loewen, and the other moves are largely due to the injuries to Escobar and Rasmus, but I wonder if Tampa will be complaining....
92-93 - Tuesday, September 13 2011 @ 04:15 PM EDT (#243848) #
Please. They should have thought about that while they left Desmond Jennings down all season.

Cooper and Loewen are upgrades over who they're replacing (Lind and Wise).
Lugnut Fan - Tuesday, September 13 2011 @ 05:06 PM EDT (#243859) #
I think Gerry is correct.  Syndergaard was actually transferred to Vancouver during the final homestand of the regular series in Lansing, but he did stick around.  He was in uniform on Friday, but that was the last day that I have seen him.  I am guessing they sent him home until instructs.

....Cooper and Loewen are upgrades over who they're replacing (Lind and Wise)....

I would tend to agree.  But just a few months ago, there were Bauxites who argued that Cooper was a complete non-prospect.  (Not me, however.)

A separate question would be whether Chris Woodward is an upgrade over Kelly Johnson.

The Lugnuts' play-by-play man recently said Syndergaard had been shut down for the season.

Th
e Jays have been very aggressive this year in pushing their pitching prospects up the ladder and in a few cases also increasing IP by significant amounts. I like the strategy but it is contrary to some conventional thoughts about development and the Jays have been much more patient this year with position prospects. Here's a summary (rankings my own) with IP including playoffs.

1. Henderson Alvarez: Dunedin-NH-Toronto (112.1 IP last year to 140)
2. Drew Hutchison: Lansing-Dunedin-NH (68.2 IP to 155.1)
3. Deck McGuire: Dunedin-NH (125.1 IP)
4. Nestor Molina: Dunedin-NH (81 IP to 133.1 in his first year as a starter)
5. Justin Nicolino: Vancouver-Lansing (66.1 IP)
6. Noah Syndergaard: Bluefield-Vancouver-Lansing (13.1 IP to 59)
7. Joel Carreno: NH-Toronto (137.2 IP to 144.2)
8.  Chad Jenkins: Dunedin-NH (141.2 IP to 174.2)
9.  Aaron Sanchez: Bluefield-Vancouver-Lansing (25 IP to 63)
13.  Casey Lawrence: Lansing-Dunedin (77.1 IP to 156.2). Lawrence also had 64.1 IP in college in 2010.

Also promoted: Rollins, Musgrove, Gabryszwski and Ybarra, the last three after their initial teams' seasons were over.

The only starting pitching prospects of note not promoted were Wojciechowski, Nolin, Taylor, Jaye, young Cardona, and 2010 draft disappointments (so far) Murphy and Adams.

Interesting (to me at least) how he compares to a much more highly rated prospect we traded away last year:

The Fisher Cats had a bad night in New England, just like their parent club. They had been behind much of the night but rallied to take a lead in the 8th. However the Flying Squirrels used a 2 run home run to win it in the ninth.

Chad Jenkins and Deck McGuire had rough nights.
    TheBunk - Tuesday, September 13 2011 @ 11:29 PM EDT (#243881) #
Hutchison pitched in extended last year so those 68 innings are only his MILB stats, he pitched more than 68 innings last year.
    China fan - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 03:31 AM EDT (#243885) #
Uglyone, thanks for the interesting comparison of Cooper and Wallace. We're still in very small sample sizes here, but Cooper now has a major-league OPS of .774 after last night. Interestingly, in his last 12 at-bats against Boston, he has 7 hits, including a home run and a double, so he's not doing it against bad teams anyway. I'm still not sure whether Cooper has a chance at the full-time 1B job next season, but he's been consistently doing better than expectations for the past 18 months so maybe he has a shot at defying the skeptics again.
    Spifficus - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 03:54 AM EDT (#243887) #
Well, his two years of lackluster AA performance (especially disappointing for a supposedly advanced college bat) made those skeptics in the first place. In the end, though, past is merely prologue, and the important thing is what he projects to be going forward. If he's an average bat and mediocre defender (continuing the comparrison, about what Wallace projects to), then he's of more use as a component in a trade, while the Jays look elsewhere for a better player at the position. Maybe a team like the Cubs, Pirates, or others would pony up a promising reliver for something better than replacement-level at the position.
    China fan - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 03:59 AM EDT (#243888) #
Just to correct my earlier post: in his last 12 at-bats against the Red Sox, Cooper has 7 hits, including 4 doubles and a home run.
    John Northey - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 09:06 AM EDT (#243889) #
I remember early in the year, after a great April (388/458/529) many were starting to wonder if AA made a mistake trading Wallace. Wallace is now at 262/337/366 for a 96 OPS+.

Cooper is a guy who is a good trade chip. Not a high value, but if someone wants a first baseman who won a batting title (AAA) then lets see if we can get another Gose or something. Cooper doesn't have a big future here most likely, so lets hope AA can pull off a great trade again.
    TamRa - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 11:23 AM EDT (#243914) #
Well, his two years of lackluster AA performance

Not quite. His second half in 2010 was quite compareable to what he did in Vegas. I made a few posts about it around here with the numbers but i don't have time to go looking for it.

    hypobole - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 12:25 PM EDT (#243920) #
i didn't receive any replies the last time I asked, but does anyone else think Cooper compares to Sean Casey? High batting average and OBP. 25 HR ceiling, but mainly doubles power. And would a Casey clone be an acceptable 1st baseman for the Jays?
    Spifficus - Wednesday, September 14 2011 @ 12:56 PM EDT (#243925) #

Which merely means that the preceding months were that much below lackluster. I was going for something that worked, without giving month-by-month blows. Either way, we were talking about an 'advanced' player forced to repeat the year. Normally a wire-to-wire breakout season would get heavily discounted in that case, let alone a decent streak at the end of the second year.
