Three affiliates in playoff action. One took the lead, one fell behind, and one will pack up the lockers.

Reading 0    New Hampshire 2

Quite the predicament Reading finds themselves in. After dropping game one they must now face Nestor Molina and Drew Hutchison in the next two of this best-of-five. But back to game one.  Chad Jenkins was masterful. The forgotten one went seven shutout innings allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out nine.

The Fisher Cats offense was largely dormant though they did cobble together nine hits. Anthony Gose and Travis D'Arnaud each had a pair. D'Arnaud drove in a run while Gose was caught stealing.

Dunedin 3    Daytona 4

Well that's a wrap on the D-Jays season. Three affiliates now remain in playoff action. In the deciding game of the three-game set, the Jays led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th before six singles and a walk did them in. Asher Wojciechowski started and was excellent going five and allowing five hits while striking out three. The combination of Frank Gailey and Aaron Loup blew up and that was that.

Bradley Glenn had the big hit in this one smacking a two-run shot in the 8th to give Dunedin a cushion. Justin Jackson had two hits while A.J. Jimenez had one.

Lansing 3    Dayton 7

The Lugnuts dropped the first match of their best-of-three due in large part to an unlucky inning which saw a handful of deflected balls for singles, one of which led to Sean Nolin having to leave the game. Nolin lasted just 4.2 and allowed four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six.

Jake Marisnick was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI while Oliver Dominguez had two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Three Stars:

3rd Star- Oliver Dominguez- 2-for-3, 2 SB, RBI

2nd Star- Asher Wojciechowski- 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

1st Star- Chad Jenkins- 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K

There's been an uptick in Jenkins' K rate over the last 4-5 starts so maybe he's figured something out.  He's always been a strike thrower but he low K rates have been a concern.

The Ks have been up for Jenkins recently, but so have been the fly balls and home runs.  His ERA over the last 10 starts was over 4.  It looks to me (from a statistical perspective) that he may be attempting to alter his pitching approach somewhat; the optimistic angle would be that last night's outing was the first time he really put it together.

Boy will the AA team have a heck of a rotation to start 2012. Given the pace the Jays have followed it will be (for 1/2 a season roughly) Chad Jenkins, Drew Hutchison, Nestor Molina and Deck McGuire. With the first 3 seeming to have figured something out at the end of the year (Jenkins with the playoff shutout innings, Hutch & Molina with 1.20 and 0.41 ERA's over 3 & 5 starts each) that could be scary good. I'm sure Vegas fans will be waiting with lots of hope that the Jays push these guys a bit and move them to AAA early.

And this is after Stewart being traded, Carreno & Alvarez & Beck called up to the Jays. Not to mention guys in A+ who are close to being moved in Asher Wojciechowski (could be #5 in AA) and Casey Lawrence (probable mid-season shift from A+ to AA).

Vegas will suffer with AAAA cast offs and Drabek probably to start 2012 (plus anyone demoted from the Jays, probably Carreno & Beck) until these guys are ready to face the toughest non-ML environment they'll ever see.

I have a feeling that going into camp this spring we will be given the same old rhetoric we got with Stewart and Alvarez, "they have been told they have a chance to make the rotation or bullpen out of camp," except this time it will be with the players listed above.

It seems every year the Jays are going into camp with a large variety of players who have a shot at the rotation, but with the way Cecil and Morrow have pitched, I'm assuming we will be hearing "there are 4 open spots."

Morrow will be given one spot, regardless of how he pitches.
However, Cecil's spot will not be certain. Velocity in camp will likely play a big factor, either he's throwing like his old self and they give him his spot or hes throwing 88 again and they start talking about a relief role.
If Alvarez finishes September strong, it's hard not to imagine him earning a spot.
And of course McGowan plays a big wild card.

There probably will be one spot open (due to McGowan/Cecil/Alvarez or injury to Romero/Morrow) for the likes of Drabek/Jenkins/Hutchinson/Molina/McGuire to fight for in camp.
Unless of course, the Jays do something stupid like spend 120 million on Darvish or sign CJ Wilson.

I just wanted to add some numbers to the "Jenkins has improved in important areas" argument. Here's his monthly AA splits this year:

JUN: 27.0ip, 5.7k/9, 3.3bb/9, 1.7k/bb, 1.0hr/9, 1.3go/ao, 1.37whip, 4.00era
JUL: 36.0ip, 6.0k/9, 2.3bb/9, 2.7k/bb, 0.8hr/9, 1.7go/ao, 1.25whip, 4.75era
AUG: 32.1ip, 7.2k/9, 2.0bb/9, 3.7k/bb, 0.3hr/9, 2.0go/ao, 0.93whip, 3.06era
SEP: 12.0ip, 12.0k/9, 1.5bb/9, 8.0k/bb, 0.8hr/9, ???go/ao, 1.08whip, 3.00era

(SEP includes his playoff start last night)

I have to say that I had pretty much given up on Jenkins after his mediocre performance in A+ this year after a poor performance there last year......but these splits are genuinely encouraging, IMO. I think he might be back on the legit prospect radar.

On the topic of Prospects - according to Noah Syndergaard in an interview on jaysprospects.com he is no longer 6'5" - he's 6'7"...what a big little beastie!

There is something to be said for skipping the last level or so for a pitcher. The Jays best ever developed pitchers...

Dave Stieb went from Dunedin at 20 to reaching the majors mid-season the next year (A for 8 starts, AAA for 8, then 18 in the majors with a 100 ERA+ and not to the minors until his last 3 seasons.

Jimmy Key went Rookie/low A, AA/AAA, then majors over 3 seasons.

Juan Guzman was rookie, A, A, AA, AA/AAA, AA, AAA/majors 6+ years in the minors largely due to some odd choices (was mix/match in pen for a couple of years. FYI: noticed he was paid $12 mil over 2 years for 1 start at the end for the Rays - boy were they bad back then).

Pat Hentgen was 4 years in A ball, 1 at AA, 1+ at AAA, then majors.

Halladay was rookie, A+, AA/AAA, AAA/majors, then collapse and rebuild.

Romero was A's, A+/AA, A+/AA, AA/AAA, majors (3 rehab in minors after injury).

4 seasons seems about the max for a guy who becomes really good, at least here. I suspect that is because if a guy is that good (Cy contender regularly) he will have the raw talent to climb fast plus the ability to learn quick. Guzman an obvious exception, but he also is the weakest of this group - hard to believe he didn't get a 3rd place vote the year he won the ERA title but 6 other guys did.

Alvarez (if for real) is sort of an exception, with 5 years in the minors but that was due to the Dominican league and an early start (at 17). He went DSL, rookie, A, A+, A+/AAA/Majors - so just 4 full seasons (3 in NA) in the minors plus 17 games this year.

I will second that Syndergaard is a beast mylegacy.  I talked to him about two weeks ago and he towered over me.  For such a big kid, he is extremely soft spoken however.  You have to strain to hear what he has to say.
Mike Green - Friday, September 09 2011 @ 02:39 PM EDT (#243520) #
He should be a hitter then.  Talk softly and carry a big stick.

I think any pitcher promoted from AA to Vegas can be labelled a marginal prospect. The Jays MO seems to be directly to the majors for those that they see to be the more sure fire major leaguers (Drabek, Stewart, Alvarez, Carreno). It's only if they fail that Vegas would be their destination. As for Carreno, he's shown nothing that would suggest he's a candidate for demotion. He may well stay in the pen, and if so, one of the bullpen spots is his to lose.

Just a brief note of thanks for all your comments and reporting through the season. Much appreciated.

Brandon Mims has been released per BA.  We drafted him  in the 9th round last year and he missed this entire season (I believe someone mentioned for personal reasons).  He had all of  2 GCL AB's last year.
Kelekin - Friday, September 09 2011 @ 07:14 PM EDT (#243556) #
Just read the same thing about Mims - sad to hear, but probably a reality that we will encounter again at some point when taking predominantly high schoolers.

I disagree.

I think that various factors including personality, pitching style, what part of their game still needs work, and age will all factor into that.

For instance, i wouldn't be at all surprised to see either Jenkins or McGuire pass through Vegas if doors don't open in the majors because of their age and relative maturity, while i'd be pretty stunned to see Hutchinson spend any significant time there.

by the way, Syndergaard was dropped back to Vancouver, ostensibly to help with the playoffs, but hasn't pitched since he came back - what's up with that?

I can't believe flunkies like McFarland start over him unless he's got a little ding or hit an innings cap.

Lugnut Fan - Friday, September 09 2011 @ 08:52 PM EDT (#243568) #
Syndergaard is still in Lansing and is in uniform for the Luggies tonight. He is apparently slightly nicked up, but may be activated later in the playoffs for lansing if they advance.

that's weird because the MiLB transaction log listed the move and the VanCan roster has his name.

Thanks for the info.

Lugnut Fan - Friday, September 09 2011 @ 09:36 PM EDT (#243573) #
I think it was one of those deals that I'd they put Syndergaard on the dl, they would lose him for a specified amount of time. Transferring him to Vancouver would allow him to be activated when ready. It does however eat a roster spot for Vancouver.

Quite a finish to the Lansing game tonight. Held hitless since their 1st batter of the game, Lansing entered the bottom of the 9th down 2-1. Marcus Knect singled, and was sacrificed. Hobson K'd for the second out, but last chance Matt Nuzzo hit a walkoff 2 run shot for a 3-2 Lansing win.

Speaking of the Lansing game, footage of the walk off (warning, some salty language towards the end.)

That was great. And no, Matt Nuzzo is not kidding that dude.

If anyone was listening online to the radio broadcast, I would be interested to know if Jesse Goldberg-Strassler had his door open.  When Nuzzo hit it, the GM for Lansing started screaming "Holy Fudge".  Only he didn't say fudge.  He said the F--- word.

Also, thank you for the kind words mylegacy.  It's fun watching these guys this season and every season.

As it is the end of the year, I would also like to thank you, LF!

I don't post very often, but I really enjoy your contributions!
