The only farm club to lose Friday, New Hampshire, managed to clinch at least a playoff bid in the Eastern Division of the Eastern league when close contenders all lost their contests.

Las Vegas 4  Salt Lake  3

51s pitching gave up 11 hits, but only three runs.  WP Winston Abbreu (8-5) threw only 1.2 IP while starter P.J. Walters gave up 8 hits, 3 ER and 3 BB while striking out5 in 5.1 IP

Las Vegas put up four including a pair of RBIs from Adam Loewen on a two run blast in the 1st inning.  David Cooper managed the other RBI with a double in the 1st as well.  The 51s put up what was to be the winning run in the 6th when Chris Woodward reached on an error and Ryan Shealy scored.

New Hampshire 5  Portland 6

Starter Chad Jenkins had a tough 2nd inning, allowing 4 runs to Portland.  He went 5.0 IP and had 7 Ks, but was unable to get a decision.  Rey Gonzalez(8-3) took the loss in 1.2 IP allowing 2 ER on 4 hits.

Jonathan Diaz (2 for 4) started the scoring in the 5th with an RBI double, plating Mark Sobolewski (2 for 4) who had doubled.  Moises Sierra (2 for 5) also earned and RBI with a single in the seventh.  Sobolewski had an RBI single in the sixth.  Travis d’Arnaud and Kevin Howard each doubled to bring the NH extra base hit total to four.  The Fisher Cats went three up three down in the ninth, unable to get any runs across.

Lansing 8  Great Lakes 1

Lansing lumber made the evening with 10 hits at Cooley Law School field to the delight of 7,112 who attended.  Pitching wasn’t too shabby at all with winning pitcher Sean Nolin (4-4) going 6 IP, allowing just a single run on three hits and threw a healthy 10 Ks and a pick-off to boot.

Matt Nuzzo went 3 for 3, scoring 2 runs and batting in a pair.  Garis Pena batted in a pair as well, one on a fielder’s choice and the other on a sac fly.  Other RBIs were credited to  Oliver Dominguez, Marcus Brisker, and Peter Mooney.  Both Mooney and Brisker tripled.

Vancouver 3  Boise 2

Four Vancouver hurlers combined for a total of 12 Ks on the evening, but Phillip Brua (7-1) got the win with just a little work in 1.0 IP.

Roan Salas had a solo blast in the 4th inning and  Nicholas Baligod who doubled was doubled in by Matt Newman in the 2nd and Baligod brought in the winning run in the 9th by doubling in Shane Opitz who had stole second base.

Bluefield 11 Elizabethton 7

Bluefield threw three pitchers at E-Ton, but the one with the W was Ajay Meyer (1-0) who took his first win of the year, striking out 7 and allowing 6 runs on 6 hits.  Meyer didn’t help his winning ways with a throwing error on a pickoff attempt.

The big gun for the evening accounting for almost have of the Blue Jays’ runs was Christopher Hawkins who batted in 5, going 3 for 5 including a triple and a pair of doubles.  Kevin Pillar also had 3 hits, batting in a pair with a double and a single.

Three Stars:

Third Star:             Matt Nuzzo – 3 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBIs

Second Star:         Adam Loewen- 2 for 4, HR, 2B, 2 RBIs

First Star:               Chistopher Hawkins – 3 for 5, 3B, 2 2B, 5 RBIS

Hechavarria had another 2 hits last night.  Aside from one hitless game on Aug. 27, he's shown absolutely no signs of cooling off.

CF - It will be interesting to see what Hech does as he matures physically - and most probably puts on some pounds/muscle.

Currently - he reminds me of Soriano without the power.

He has been impressive at the plate - and almost all of his hits have been good hits - barrel on ball - (not dinkers and bloops).

I think this kid is going to be special and can see why they paid up to get him.

As far as Hech is concerned, if he only had to face LHP, he'd be MLB ready. RHP kept him to a .210 average at AA, and although he's had a great start vs righties in AAA, (.390 average), the 14/1 K/BB ratio does not bode well for continued success. Great to see the improvements, but still a ways to go.

Hypo - the 14-1 ratio is such a small sample size - I don't know how you can talk about that boding well or not well for the future.
Ridiculously small sample size for a young player at a high level.

He played this year as a 22 year old.
I cant predict the future - but he isnt the first prospect I would bet against. Thats for sure.

If you used the same method of comparison - Snider, Drabek and Rasmus would be gone by now.
And maybe Arencibia as well.

As an aside - we all have our perspectives.
I am a big believer in relative performance and production- and I really dont like hype and the projection thing.

Projection is fun - but at the end of the day - its performance that counts.
Consistent performance.

I dont want to see a guy that is great once and awhile - I want to see someone that is good everyday.

Wasn't mentioned but Dunedin took both ends of their doubleheader with Clearwater to clinch their postseason berth.

And Bluefield's win won their series 2-1. They're off to the finals.

bball - the 14/1 is a SSS, true, but it's a continuation of similar season long issues at AA against righthanders. He's hitting well as everyone seems to be pointing out and he's had no problems with lefthanders all year, but I just wanted to point out his bat may not be as ready as some may think. If anyone can find his NH splits, which disappear at MiLB once a player changes teams, you can see the 14/1 is typical of his season vs RHP.

hypo - cant say I disagree with your caution.

It works both ways - it is also far too small of a sample size to make a judgement on the upside as well.

All I am saying is that he looks pretty darn good the last month.
Forget about the numbers for a second.

I dont know why - or how - that happened - but his approach to every at bat is alot different than what I have seen from him the last year or so.

At this point - I am watching him and how he handles the high hard stuff. That is where I see some exposure.

It will be fun to watch this young man as he continues his development.

eft today's game with "diziness" - Escobar left with a "jammed wrist"

Be watching to see if Hech or Loewen isn't in today's Vegas  game...

I suppose I have to admit the possibility it would be Mastro too but I can't see how Loewen is behind Mastro and the 40 ought not be that big a concern - they could waive him as easy as they could lose him in the off-season as a minor league FA

Bluefield begins its best-of-three Appy championship series tonight in Johnson City. Canadian Nicholas Purdy gets the start against the Cardinals affiliate. Deivy Estrada  and Tyler Ybarra are the Game 2 and 3 starters, in Bluefield. The teams split in the regular season, 3-3. Johnson City had the league's best record (45-23) and best hitting team (Bluefield was third in both runs and team OPS). JC was second in team ERA (Bluefield was fifth). If you're in Vegas today, you might get 2-1 against the baby Jays.

Bluefield OF and league batting champ Kevin Pillar and Johnson City catcher Jon Keener were teammates for three years at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Pillar was drafted 979th overall, Keener 980th.

Nestor Molina just keeps on trucking. 3 shutout innings, 1 hit, no walks and 4 strikeouts tonight. The totals for him in AA: 22 innings, 12 hits, 0 homers, 2 walks, 33 strikeouts. That is dominance.

Bluefield is hanging on to a 3-2 lead in the eighth. Hawkins is 0-4 thus far, but Kevin Mill...er, Pillar has a HR and 3 RBI. I wonder if he also keeps the clubhouse loose with his big personality and sense of humour.

Tough loss for Bluefield in the bottom of the ninth. Of course they were outhit 12-2 so you could argue they didn't deserve to win.
Gerry - Saturday, September 03 2011 @ 10:51 PM EDT (#243132) #
Kyle Drabek has pitched three good innings to start the game tonight. 39 pitches, 26 strikes, one hit, one K.
greenfrog - Saturday, September 03 2011 @ 11:37 PM EDT (#243133) #
Nice while it lasted - wheels come off for Drabek in the 5th.
TamRa - Sunday, September 04 2011 @ 12:32 AM EDT (#243135) #
Woodward is bound for Toronto, Tucker Jensen will move up to pitch for Lansing tomorrow

Hech is 3/5 so far, 2 doubles and 2 RBI - he's back over .400 on the (AAA) season

Drabek's troubled fifth:

Sandoval singles softly but Mastro deflects the ball and Loewen fields it backing him up
Richardson ground single to RF
Kiniry line single to LF - bases loaded
Karcich RBI single to SS
Amarista ground single to RF RBI, runner out at 2B on throw
Wildpitch, run scores
sac fly run scores
ground out to first

Which is to say, for the most part he was getting blooped to death. Outside that inning he gave up no other runs until the seventh. when the lead-off hitter homered. He has 103 pitches through 7 IP (his longest outing for Veegas this year) so he's probably done.

So through seven, Drabek, here's the fifth inning:

1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 0 K - nothing hit very hard

The rest of the game:

6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
On the whole, more positive than negative.

Vancouver backed into the playoffs as Everett lost their game.

That makes five Blue Jay teams in the playoffs.

To Mylegacy...Do we have a group toast to the GREAT, REALLY GREAT playoff accomplishments of our farm NOW.
OR
Should we wait for the championship Toast.

We could be near the top in Minor League winning % this year.
Mylegacy - Sunday, September 04 2011 @ 10:03 PM EDT (#243164) #
You can have a "group toast" (buttered if you want) - me - I'm havin' a scotch (single malt natch).
