Bluefield clinched the division title yesterday and today is the last day of their regular season with the playoffs starting tomorrow.  Elsewhere, New Hampshire won big to keep them ahead in their division chase.  Dunedin lost and their division lead is down to 1.5 games.  Lansing had a nice come from behind win and Las Vegas and Kyle Drabek had a bad day.

Las Vegas 1  Sacramento 13

Las Vegas were outhit 16-4 as Kyle Drabek really struggled.  Drabek gave up 9 runs in 3 innings.  He walked in two runs in the second inning.  The at-bats where he walked in runs were 6 and 7 pitch at-bats where he couldn't put the hitters away with two strikes.  Jason Lane pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 4.85.

I still can see Drabek getting a September call-up, more to work on things in the bullpen than to start.

New Hampshire 10  Trenton 4

This was a tight game through three innings but the Fisher Cats scored 8 runs in the  fourth to put the game away.  The big hit was a grand slam from Travis d'Arnaud, his 20th home run of the year.  Nestor Molina was pulled after three innings, I assume this was pre-planned and not because the Fisher Cats scored those 8 runs.  The 3 innings by Molina were typical, one walk, five K's, three hits and one unearned run.

Rey Gonzalez, and Wes Etheridge each pitched three innings in relief.

D'Arnaud had 3 hits, Crabbe, Perales and McDade had 2 each.

Daytona 9   Dunedin 6

Scott Gracey was forced into action as a starter due to a doubleheader last week and he was hit for 4 runs in 4 innings.  That made it "empty the bullpen night" as the Jays decided to live for another day, Justin Phillabaum and Harold Mozingo allowed three runs between them and in the middle of the eighth Dunedin were being outhit 16-4.

The "live for another day" plan was reevaluated in the eighth when Brian Van Kirk hit a three run home run to make it a 7-6 game.  Van Kirk is probably not a prospect, he just turned 26 and is repeating the FSL, but he has been playing very well after a slow start.  His OPS since the all-star break is 949.  However Matt Daly, who has really struggled in the second half, gave up a 2 run home run to Shane Opitz's brother to make it 9-6 and Dunedin were unable to come back.

Sean Ochinko and Van Kirk had two hits each.

Lansing 6  Fort Wayne 5

Lansing trailed 5-2 in the fifth before scoring twice in the seventh and two more in the eighth.  In the seventh Jake Marisnick and KC Hobson hit back to back jacks.  Jon Jones drove in the tying and go ahead runs in the eighth.

Noah Syndegaard pitched four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk.  Fort Wayne stole seven bases, six when Syndergaard was pitching.

Marisnick and Gari Pena had two hits each.

Vancouver - scheduled day-off

Bluefield 5 Danville 1

Bluefield clinched the division with this win.  And with just one more game in the season before the playoffs the team used five pitchers to get the win.  Ajay Meyer, Nick Purdy, Jeremy Gabrszwyski, Misaul Diaz and Ian Kadish held Danville to just 3 hits.

Only two of Bluefield's 5 runs were earned and the Jays had just seven hits, but a win is a win.

GCL Blue Jays - season over

3 Stars

3rd star - Brian Van Kirk

2nd star - Nick Purdy

1st star - Travis d'Arnaud

Playoff Picture

With the regular season finished, finishing or in the final stretch here is the latest in the playoff picture for the Jay's seven north american farm teams.  Most teams have 6 or 7 games left to play.

In the playoffs: Lansing (based on first half); Bluefield

In contention: New Hampshire (leading by 3.5 games); Dunedin (leading by 1.5 games); Vancouver (If Eugene win both first and second half titles then the team with the next best overall record gets in.  That could be Vancouver.  Eugene leads second half by 1 and they have won 6 in a row.)

Eliminated: Las Vegas; GCL Blue Jays

Congrats to Jason Lane for continuing his passable Brooks Kieschniek impersonation.

Some centerfielder notes.  Marisnick's slash line is up to .324/.396/.506 with 35/8 SB/CS at 20 in the Midwest League.  And as for Gose, another recent comparable would be Cameron Maybin.  Maybin struck out about as much, but posted otherworldly BABIPs on ground balls to hit .275-.300.  Gose has had a lot of ROEs this year.  Devon White and Maybin both took a while to develop, and one guesses that it might be the same for Gose.

The runners were having a field day with Jack Murphy in Lansing last night.  There were 7 stolen bases, 5 off Syndergaard and 2 off Griffith.  No runners were caught stealing, but Syndergaard and Griffith each picked off 1.

If Gose's speed is inducing infielder errors I'd love to see his practical OBP. Is there anywhere to see the # of ROEs?

Not that I am aware of, 92-93.  My knowledge of it simply comes from checking milb.com recaps, and that has been far from methodical.

Gose also reaches regularly on catchers interference.  I would guess I have seen that about 5 times this year.

According to MLBTR (believe most of these were already known): The Blue Jays announced the signings of seven international free agents: Roberto Osuna, Wuilmer Becerra, Jesus Gonzalez, Manuel Cordova, Alberto Tirado, Jairo Labourt, and Yeyfry Del Rosario. Osuna, the 16-year-old nephew of Antonio, tossed 19 2/3 innings in the Mexican League this year. The Mexican righty was one of the top July 2nd pitching prospects this year, wrote Baseball America's Ben Badler. Becerra is a "speedy shortstop who projects as an outfielder," wrote Badler. The 17-year-old comes out of Venezuela.

Gose has ROE 11 times this year, per: http://www.statcorner.com/batter.php?id=543238

He's also been HBP 11 times.

Adding 11 ROEs and 5 CIs to Gose's OBP takes it from .346 to .372 by my napkin math.

Good to see Osuna is finally signed, been wondering what was going on with him. The Jays ended up signing 3 of the 6 July 2 guys BA had projected to have the highest bonuses (Osuna, Becerra and Dawel Lugo who signed earlier). Another influx of potential high level talent into the system.

One thing I'm curious about are the announced signings of Labourt and del Rosario. They pitched all year with the DSL Jays. Had they only been signed to a 1 yr "trial contract" last year?

Mike Green - Tuesday, August 30 2011 @ 12:14 PM EDT (#242690) #
Thanks, DaveB.  The other interesting things in the link are Gose's decent LD, low IF rate and  decent HR/BIA rates.

The signings also strengthen the renewed connection between the Jays and Latin America. With Bautista, Escobar, Alvarez and Carreno (and honorary Latino Arencibia) on the big club, and the recent influx of prospects, there should be lots of burgeoning Jays fans in LA. This bodes well for the organization.

One other positive with Gose's speed is that even with a GB rate over 47%, he's only grounded into 3 DP's this year. One can also factor in the fact that even when he grounds intoa  force play with a runner on 1st,  that slower runner is replaced at 1st by the speedy Gose. Great wheels have so many benefits.

Agreed that adding these international free agents is a very good thing. For the $30 mil a year it would cost for Pujols you can acquire a ton of these international free agents and if just a few pan out you will be far ahead.

I'd still like Pujols though :)

I'd like both.

I'd like a house by the ocean, too.  But, I would have to triple my income to do that.

The FAN 590 mentioned the Osuna signing maybe half an hour or so ago.  What caught my ear was that they said he was 6'3" 230.  Other reports I had read had him at 6'0" 198.  Not sure if I believe he's 6'3"...but I want to.
92-93 - Tuesday, August 30 2011 @ 01:23 PM EDT (#242702) #
I'm not sure we should want to believe a 15 year old is 230 pounds. The 200 sounded bad enough.
TheBunk - Tuesday, August 30 2011 @ 02:56 PM EDT (#242713) #
Yeah, that was a weird article. I'm thinking the article was meaning to accumulate AA's international signings so far in 2011 as Labourt was signed in January I believe. Even then, it's missing bonus guys like Osman Gutierrez.

Luckily, Rogers faces no such shortage of income.

TimberLee - Tuesday, August 30 2011 @ 03:25 PM EDT (#242725) #
As a Maritimer I can tell you that, if being close to the ocean is your only consideration, you can find a house for relatively little. If a commute to anywhere is a concern, then your salary estimate may be right.

AFL rosters are out and the Jays appear to be sending only two big names: Hechavarria, and Gose.

Unfortunately, they aren't permitted to spend on luxury.

Interesting that there were only five names - teams are supposed to get six.

Yan Gomes is an interesting choice. I don't think he'll ever start in the majors but I get the vibe that he's a guy who can hang around as a reserve for several years.

Gerry - Tuesday, August 30 2011 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#242742) #
Agree on Gomes, he has been able to hit well in limited atbats. Gomes needs to work on his defensive game and he should do that in the AFL.

Crawford and Loup are both LOOGY candidates, Crawford in particular has progressed quickly and could be a bullpen candidate by the middle of next year.
Maldoff - Tuesday, August 30 2011 @ 08:38 PM EDT (#242743) #
With Grandal on the roster, I wonder how much Gomes will be able to play behind the plate?
