Las Vegas 11 at Memphis 0
Oh yeah. Las Vegas absolutely crushed Memphis on Wednesday night, and it wasn't even in Vegas. I could tell you about pretty much any hitter here, but let's go with Adeiny Hechavarria (2-4, BB), David Cooper (1-5), Travis Snider (1-4, HR, BB) and Jayson Nix (2-3, 2B, 2 BB). It should also be noted that Jason Lane DHed, but was probably available out of the bullpen. Could we see him do both, I mean simultaneously, at some point soon? That'd be cool.
Chad Beck was excellent in getting the win, hurling seven and a third scoreless innings. Beck didn't strike many guys out and gave up more fly balls than ground balls, so he was probably walking a tightrope, but he limited the walks and got some good luck on balls in play.
New Hampshire 4 at Altoona 5 (7 innings)
Altoona scored two in the bottom of the sixth (in a seven inning game) to take the lead and the Cats couldn't back against Curve closer Noah Krol. Chad Jenkins pitched a six-inning complete game and did what he does best: he got 11 groundouts to just three fly-outs, and he didn't walk many (two). But despite those positive attributes, one strikeout just isn't enough, and he needs to show he can miss some more bats.
Travis d'Arnaud and Anthony Gose too did what they do best, which is be awesome baseball players. The NH catcher went 2-4 with a homer, his 18th of the year, and Gose reached base twice on a single and a walk and stole his 53rd and 54th bases of the year.
New Hampshire 6 at Altoona 3
In what I think was the second game (I'm way too lazy to look it up, but it was six degrees colder in this game, implying evening vs. afternoon), the Cats got shut down for six innings but came roaring back in the final frame after Altoona had already used their closer (in the first game). The Cats bats plated five in the seventh thanks to a solo homer from Yan Gomes and consecutive two-run hits by Dan Perales (double) and Travis d'Arnaud (single). Gomes had the best day of the plate, going 3-3 with the aforementioned homer.
Starter's duties fell to B.J. LaMura, who at least kept his team in it. Frank Gailey and Clint Everts were perfect out of the bullpen.
Dunedin 10 at Clearwater 1
Dunedin pulled their best Vegas impression in pummelling Clearwater on Wednesday night.
The good: Asher Woj (7 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K), A.J. Jimenez (3-4, 2B, SF, 4 RBI), Sean Ochinko (2-5, HR), Ryan Schimpf (1-3, HR, 2 BB), Kenen Bailly (who was discussed yesterday, 2-4).
The bad: nothing.
Lansing 2 at Bowling Green 3
Lansing mustered a valiant comeback attempt in the ninth, scoring a run to come within one, but that was as close as they got. K.C. Hobson singled and doubled in four trips, and catcher Jack Murphy singled, walked and homered. Tyler Powell pitched five innings of two-run ball.
Salem-Keizer 1 at Vancouver 4
Vancouver stifled the Volcanoes last night, getting a solid four-inning start from Ben White and scoreless relief from Kramer Champlin, Philip Brua and Drew Permison in the process. That provided plenty of breathing room for the bats to bang out a few runs, and they bang they didn't, really. But they hit lots of singles and drew lots of walks, especially Kevin Patterson (2-3, BB), and that worked.
Burlington 3 at Bluefield 7
Aaron Sanchez got the start and dominated the Royals over five innings, giving up just two hits and whiffing seven while allowing a single run. Even though the bullpen gave up two more, the bats had built enough of a lead. Notably, Art Charles reached base thrice, Chris Hawkins was 3-4, and Kevin Pillar (pronounced Pil-LAR) singled and tripled.
GCL Jays 9 at GCL Pirates 8 (14 innings)
Whoa. A marathon game that saw the G-Jays throw nine pitchers at the Pirates ended in a victory when Christian Frias doubled home Jacob Anderson in the top of the 14th. Among the pitchers used were starter Joe Musgrove (3 IP, 1 H, 2 K) and Jeremy Gabryszwski (1 IP, 2 K).
Jorge Vega-Rosado probably had the best game at the plate, going 2-5 with a double, a walk and a sac fly.
DSL Jays 0 at DSL Angels 3
Not much to see here. Jairo Labourt pitched and allowed two hits and two walks over three innings, striking out four. No hitter reached more than once.
Three Stars!
3. Aaron Sanchez - 5 IP, 7 K
2. A.J. Jimenez: 3-4, 2B, SF, 4 RBI
1. Asher Woj: 7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER.
