The affiliates had a solid performance on Sunday with four wins in six tries. Former first rounder Kevin Ahrens had a big day, including a three-run homer. Today is Draft Deadline Day. By the end of today, the organization (hopefully) will have an influx of new, high-ceiling talent to help out an already-impressive system.

Las Vegas 8 Nashville 6

Kyle Drabek allowed 11 hits and one walk in 5.1 innings of work. He gave up five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts. Bobby Korecky worked 1.1 scoreless innings. Danny Farquhar saved his 11th game despite allowing a run in the ninth inning. Adeiny Hechavarria had another two hits but struck out twice. RIcado Nanita had two hits, as well, and he slammed a three-run homer. Two hits were also had by Travis Snider, and David Cooper.

Akron 2 New Hampshire 1

Despite allowing five walks in seven innings, Joel Carreno struck out six batters and gave up just one run. He allowed four hits. Frank Gailey pitched the final two innings and allowed one run, which led to the loss. Moises Sierra continued to add to his career high in homers with a solo shot - his 17th. Anthony Gose and Michael McDade each struck out three times. The only other hits came from Darin Mastroianni, and Yan Gomes.

Dunedin 7 Tampa 5

Toronto continues to sign minor league free agents and indy league players to help get Dunedin through the end of the season (rather than promoting from Lansing because the club is in a playoff race). Vince Bongiovanni was brought back to make a start but he was roughed up with five runs allowed in four innings. Scott Gracey, though, turned things around with 3.1 scoreless innings and he wound up with the win. He struck out four batters. Steven Turnbull and Aaron Loup also threw well. On offense, Kevin Ahrens (remember him?) had three hits and drove in four (three of which came on a homer). Ryan Schimpf and Justin Jackson had two hits a piece. Brad McElroy went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and is hitting .380 in August.

Fort Wayne 8 Lansing 4

Marcus Walden had a rough outing and gave up four runs in as many innings. He walked four and struck out just one batter. Scott Strickland and Alesone Escalante were also roughed up and allowed two runs each. At the plate, K.C. Hobson, Markus Brisker, and Bryson Namba each had two hits. Matt Nuzzo slammed a three-run homer to account for most of the run scoring. Oliver Dominguez was 1-for-5 with a steal but he struck out four times.

Vancouver 7 Yakima 3

Blake McFarland allowed three runs in 5.0 innings of work. He walked two and struck out two. Keeping his innings down, Justin Nicolino worked in relief. He did not allow a run in 2.1 innings of work. He gave up three hits, no walks and struck out three. Drew Permison did not allow a run in 1.2 innings. Shane Opitz had two hits, two RBI and stole a base. Bryan Kervin, Yeico Aponte, and Nick Baligod also had two hits. Kevin Patterson was just 1-for-5 but hit a two-run homer.

Bluefield 7 Pulaski 2

Mitchell Taylor allowed two runs in five innings of work. He gave up four hits and one walk but struck out just two. Tyler Ybarra worked an outstanding 3.2 innings worth of relief. He gave up just two hits and one walk. Ybarra struck out five batters. Dalton Pompey continues to rake with his promotion to Bluefield. He had another two hits, including a solo homer. Danny Arcila had three hits, including a double and two RBI. Arnie Munoz also had two hits. Chris Hawkins was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

GCL Jays - Off Day

DSL Jays - Off Day

The Three Stars:
3. Danny Arcila, three hits
2. Ricardo Nanita, two hits, homer, three RBI
1. Kevin Ahrens, three hits, homer, four RBI

I hope Drabek keeps getting pounded because they are forcing him to develop certain pitches and not worry about results, otherwise...yikes.

Ahrens' 28:24 K:BB ratio since the ASG really jumps out at me. Could the 22 year old be turning a corner at A+?

Will someone who has seen Bobby Korecky pitch, say something about him.  I know he has an unusual life story or at least an unusual baseball life story but he is a little righty who seems to be able to get people out first in AA and now with a very few outings in AAA where no one seems to ever get out.  Does he have some kind of trick pitch?  If he keeps getting guys out in AAA, don't they have to see if he can get guys out in the Major Leagues?

Pompey is 22-0 stealing bases so far this year.  Once in a blue moon, a 16th rounder will blossom.  Maybe it will be Pompey.  He's 18 in the Appy League, and seems to have some strike zone judgment, a little bit of pop and good speed.

Eleven hits and one walk for Drabek in 5.1 innings?  I've heard of "pitching to contact" but that's a little ridiculous...

There are 3 weeks or so left in the minor league season and if the standings hold up five of the seven north american Blue Jay affiliates would be in the playoffs.

New Hampshire lead their division by 7 games.

Dunedin lead their division by one game.

Lansing made the playoffs from the first half of the season but are in second place again in the second half.

Vancouver are in second place but the first place team, Eugene, already made the playoffs.  Vancouver will make it if they stay in second place and they are 2 games ahead of the third place team.

Bluefield are in first place by one game but again two teams make the playoffs and they are six games ahead of the third place team.

Las Vegas and the GCL Jays are extremely doubtful playoff participants.  The GCL Jays magic number is 2.

Drabek gave up 3 line drive hits in the first inning, and after that, it was ground ball after ground ball.  18 ground balls (10 turned into outs including 1 DP, 7 hits, 1 error), 3 line drives (all hits), 2 fly balls (1 single, 1 out), 1 walk and 4 strikeouts was the batted ball summary.  That's a Kevin Brown profile.  I would much rather see that than 4 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Pompey is rapidly becoming my favourite of the lower level (below Lansing) non-pitching prospects.  Given his age, I think his performance has been excellent.  Great to have a Toronto area prospect doing so well.  In 2008, they took another Canadian kid in the 16th round who is one of their better prospects, Michael Crouse.  Maybe lightning will strike twice for them in the 16th round.

Regarding Ahrens, I recall that last year, he also started to hit much better late in the season, and a few people thought he had "turned the corner", particularly with the change to hitting exclusively righty, but this year, he slipped right back again.  He has been in the system for 5 years now, and his seasonal batting averages are .230, .259, .215, .242, and .241.  On the plus side, he has reached career highs in HR's and BB's this year, and the season's OPS is over .700 for the 1st time. He's still just 22 years old.  I don't think I'd completely write him off, but I think his chances are slim.  Maybe they give him a shot at AA next year.

Gerry  ...  I'm not sure about Vancouver's playoff situation .  My take ...  in the Current Standings, Van is 6 games behind the first place Everett & Salem- Keiser teams in the 2nd half standings and unless Eugene can overtake the 2 game deficit and finish ahead of those teams Van's superior record would not qualify them for the playoffs . If there were 3 games left in the schedule Eugene would have to win 3 games say against Everett, and Vancouver would have to defeat S-K 3 games to zero for Van to advance. The whole process is more than complicated and , even with prolonged perousal,  I'm still not sure if I'm interpreting the NWL playoff format correctly or not .

Snider didn't have just 2 hits.  One of them was a home run which unfortunately is a big deal.

The Snider homer can be seen at milb.com by non-subscribers. It's a line-drive well over the fence in right.

Drabek had a horrible first inning but after that, the next 4.1 was pretty good work.
Gerry - Monday, August 15 2011 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#241047) #
jgadfly: I am not an expert, I just looked at the milb.com website. On that website it shows that Eugene is in first place and that Eugene was the first half winner. If you click on playoff procedures on that page you can see this:

If one team wins both the first and second half of the season then the team with the next best winning percentage for the entire season will get into the playoffs. If there is a tie for the next best winning percentage then the second half tiebreakers come into play.

So, if Eugene wins both halves then Vancouver, right now, has the next best record. Do you read it differently?

Hechavarria 3/4, 2B, 2 RBI so far tonight. Batting .563 for Vegas.
James W - Monday, August 15 2011 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#241064) #
Gerry, that's correct.  The problem for Vancouver is that Eugene is currently 2 games behind both Everett and Salem-Keizer in the second half standings.  The other problem is that Vancouver is 6 games back.
