I'm going to give Jake Marisnick 4 stars for his 4/5, HR, 2 SB performance last night.

I'm going to give Jake Marisnick 4 stars for last night (a HR his first AB, a bunt single and SB the next ... sweet) AND his entire season. He's a 5-tool guy whose tools are actually put to use at a high level of consistent performance instead of just being some kind of fantasyland projection.

KLaw's twittering that Jays have signed John Stilson (108 overall) he's a 6'3" 200 pound RHP with one arm - the left. Seriously, he was projected to be a top college pick (Texas A&M) before a tear in his labrum - however Dr Andrews said it won't need surgery. The other bad news about the kid is he has a short funky way of throwing and some think he'll have to be a closer even before his injury, KLaw included.

When healthy he's a four pitch guy with good command. A great 12-6 curve and his fast ball has nice late slide to it. Seriously - if he heals he could be a good pick. Born July 28th 1990 - means he's just turned 21.

Beede is saying Jay's offer "not close." Says he's "content to be playing pro or in college" - he sees either as a win-win. Reports say Jay's are offering between 2 and 3 million. Man - I wish someone would have offered me 2.5 big ones to forgo college and work every fifth day for 2 to 3 hours.

Clock continues to tick. Personally - I say the kid blinks.

RE: Stilson as a reliever ..."In 2010, John had one of the best seasons in recent NCAA history. His 0.80 ERA led the nation, and his 114 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched made him one of the most dominant closers in the game"   This is from the Icon Agency press release found at   ...     http://eon.businesswire.com/news/eon/20110813005012/en/John-Stilson/ICON-Sports/Rob-Martin

Ok, Gerry or someone - get a hold of Fasano or someone and find out if Hech changed his mechanics or some such or if this is a mirage. i can't believe that the PCL effect explains this when it's in Nashville.

I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wish I could afford to see them in Memphis on Friday! (<Drabek start)

BTW - Kevin Gray tweeted that Alan Farina recently had Tommy John surgery, so count him out for basically all of 2012.

Hutchison and Lawrence both had excellent games tonight - Lawrence's last 10 starts for Lansing amount to a 2.32 ERA and a 6:1 K:BB ratio. I know these non-drafted free agents tend to lose their dominance as they advance but he's doing his part right now.

Also, Griffin Murphy had his best pro outing since his first of the season (pretty much identical, in fact, except for an extra unearned run and one less K)

That's a shame about Farina.  Always thought he was underrated.  He had put up some very good numbers last year and this year, and until the injury earlier this year, I thought he could have been a good addition to the Jays bullpen next year some time.

It was indeed an excellent outing by Hutchison, even though he didn't get a win.  Among his 9 strikeouts in 6 innings, he managed to strike out A-Rod himself -- not once, but twice!

Too bad about Farina, he was pretty well the only bullpen guy on any of our prospect lists. Looks like we may have very good one in Stilson, Carreno is often mentioned as shifting to the pen as he climbs the ladder and I guess Farquar is still in the mix as potentially a future pen guy in the bigs. The one minor league reliever that stands out to me is Danny Barnes down in Lansing. He's only 20, which is age appropriate for the league, and has only given up 35 hits in 57 innings, with an 87/14 K/BB ratio. What I don't know is whether he's getting by with fringy stuff and great control or if he has a legitimate chance at being a major league reliever.
