The offense was fairly stagnant. Travis D'Arnaud went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI while Kevin Howard had three hits.

Brevard County 6    Dunedin 7

Bradley Glenn did much of the damage in this one going 3-for-4 with his 23rd homer. Other than that, it was pretty spread out. Ryan Goins did have two hits. So there was that.

Kevin Pillar had the best night at the plate going 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Chris Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

GCL Blue Jays 1    GCL Tigers 2

The teams finished Wednesday's suspended affair before the scheduled game Thursday. Eric Arce and Seth Conner each had a pair of hits including a double.

I don't really understand why Jenkins is described as "effectively wild" yesterday.  He allowed 4 walks, but zero runs and only 5 hits, plus he had 8 strikeouts.  To me that spells "effective" but not really "wild" in any significant way.  Four walks in 6.2 innings is not a huge problem.  Actually it's probably his best outing so far at the AA level, and it's a pretty good sign for the future.

On another matter -- I suggested in another thread that Joel Carreno might be worth considering for a couple of starts in the Jays rotation if they give up on Mills before the September reinforcements arrive.  Anyone agree?

What on earth is a 'shuuto"?

Shuuto = the reverse slider aka the Great Equalizer

Here's what wikipedia says about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuuto

"The pitch is mainly designed to break down and in on right-handed batters, so as to prevent them from making solid contact with the ball. It can also be thrown to left-handers to keep them off balance."

Seems to me it's just a 2-seam fastball(?), maybe his just has extra movement.

I think it's basically a 2-seam fastball/sinker. I'm guessing that in Japan Henderson Alvarez's fastball would be a "shuuto".

Those hitters shouldn't feel bad about not hitting the shuuto. Jack Elliot couldn't hit it either.

"Joe Musgrove went three innings and continued his recent resurgence by allowing just one hit and striking out three."

I suppose that would imply he ever surged before this. ;)

Mills has three more turns before September - He'd have to stink REALLY bad to not get those I imagine. Plus, they probably want to respect the 'Cat's playoff run.

Beyond that, he'd become another guy who's crowding the picture in September if he were here.

But I wouldn't say it's impossible. He's back in line a little bit but he's pitched well enough that he's worthy in a vacuum.

The official MiLB's website had a good article on the Mercer Cup and the rivalry between Bluefield and Princeton. I had no idea the rivalry was that intense. Bluefield hasn't had a winning season since 2002, so the fans there definitely needed something to celebrate.

Tyler Pastornicky has been smokin' hot.  He's hitting .319 for the season in double A and triple A (the International League not the PCL) with decent strike zone judgment and some pop.

It looks to me like the deal will end up as Escobar for Pastornicky.  With Escobar's deal and a higher payroll, that will be fine even if Pastornicky continues his ascent.

I see Carreno as a future reliever. Whether giving him major league starts is a good development strategy to that end is a good idea, I don't know, but I wouldn't mind seeing him up in September in some capacity.

Notice that Hechvarria played for Vegas tonight..
PeteMoss - Friday, August 12 2011 @ 11:22 PM EDT (#240855) #
and in typical Vegas style was 2 for 4.

Molina had a very strong AA debut as well. 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 8 ks.

To be fair, the game was in Nashville, which doesn't have the high altitude/desert conditions issues of many other PCL parks and is traditionally a fairly low scoring environment. On the other hand the Vegas pitching staff still managed to get pounded for 14 hits and 13 runs.

the quotes from Fasano and Walker about Molina tonight were impressive.

@Graymatter11 “(Molina) was as good as advertised. Put hitters away. His split was off the table. It's a devastating pitch,"Pete Walker"

@graymatter11 “He works fast, throws strikes and has a finishing pitch,” NH manager Sal Fasano said."And he induced a lot of ground balls"

Excellent news. I would be happy if the Jays can sign two of Beede, Norris and Comer. Thrilled if they land all three.

If atleast two of these guys don't get signed i'll be very confused. What was the point of drafting these guys if you were'nt going to the mat to sign them? You want frontline talent, you pay what it takes to get them. AA makes places no roadblocks infront of him to acquire a Rasmus or Lawrie. Takes on dead weight and 7 million, doesn't fall in love with his own prospects. It will be very surprising and disapointing to me if at least two of these guys aren't signed up by the 15th.

To be honest, I'll be disappointed if all 4 of Beede, Smith, Comer and Norris are not signed.

Because? Just confident I assume. I couldn't care less about Smith. If all he profiles to be is basically what his father was, what's the point?  Actually, I just looked at his fathers stats again for the first time since the 90's. Gawd.

So the Jays pay a half million dollars to get an extra supplemental pick only only to use it on a throw-away draftee in Smith? Obviously the Jays scouting staff see something in him that the on-line reports don't. I'll trust the Jays scouting staff on this one.
BlueJayWay - Saturday, August 13 2011 @ 05:50 PM EDT (#240877) #
Because? Just confident I assume.

Pretty much.  I just don't think the Jays are going to draft these guys and then not pony up.  AA wants this kind of high-end talent in the system.  I'd be surprised if he let it get away.

Well certainly. Either the MLB.com crew and/or Keith Law said on draft night, i believe, that his projection was his father, with a little more _____.

I'll take two of three - would love all three of course - but i want Matt Dean too.
