The affiliates were 3-4 on the night with one rainout and another game called early.  The highlights were Bluefield's pitching and Las Vegas' bats.

Las Vegas 10 New Orleans 6

Las Vegas, NV - The 51's compiled their damage in three innings with a couple of three spots and a four spot to filet the Marlins affiliate.

Batting - Travis Snider (4/5) responded to his latest demotion in the best way he knew how by driving in four runs.  Darin Mastroianni (4/5) also responded to Snider's demotion in the best way he knew how by coming up a home run short of the cycle.  Mike McCoy (2/3) responded to Snider's demotion in the best way he knew how with his 46th double, two walks and two RBI.  Jayson Nix  (2/5) responded to Snider's demotion in the best way he knew how with a double and three RBI.  David Cooper (2/5)...wait for it...responded to Snider's demotion in the best way he knew how with a double to put his average up to .379.  Also, Ricardo Nanita (1/5) had an RBI while Chris Woodward (1/3) and Brian Jeroloman (1/3) each doubled and drew a walk.  The BJBBM is up to 35 now and Woodward has 31 doubles!  Adam Loewen (0/5) saw his invitation to the 51s hit parade get lost in the mail.

Running
- Snider again responded to his latest demotion in the best way he knew how by stealing two bases.  McCoy responded to Snider's demotion in the worst way he knew how by getting caught in his lone SB attempt.  Nanita was thrown out at home from center field.

Pitching - Chad Gaudin's return to the Jays organization was not exactly a rousing a success.  He surrendered a run an inning over three frames on four hits and two walks and struck out one.  Mike MacDonald (6-5) pegged down the Zephyrs to a single run on three hits over three innings to earn the victory.  Just like my favourite foreign movie.  Former Ottawa Lynx hurler Winston Abreu gave up a two-run bomb among his three hits but struck out a batter over one inning.  Lefty Rommie Lewis finished up with two perfect innings and struck out one.

Defence - The 51s 'D' responded to Snider's demotion in the best way they knew how by committing no errors.

Erie 4 New Hampshire 2

Manchester, NH - The Tigers affiliate had four one-run innings while the Fisher Cats had only two, ergo, your final score!

Batting - Travis d'Arnaud (3/4) was a triple short of the cycle as he clubbed his 16th dinger of the year and his 31st double.  Yan Gomes (1/3) doubled and his sacrifice fly put New Hampshire on the board in the seventh.  Adeiny Hechavarria (1/4) and Jonathan Diaz (1/3) had the other hits.  Craig Stansberry (0/2) and Moises Sierra (0/3) each walked.  Anthony Gose (0/4), Dan Perales (0/4) and Mark Sobolewski (0/3) had no luck with the stick.

Running - Hechavarria was caught trying to steal second.

Pitching - Joel Carreno was tagged with the loss (7-9) despite putting in a quality start.  His three run, six inning performance came after allowing seven hits and a walk.  He struck out six and split his eight outs in play evenly on the ground and in the air.  B.J. LaMura pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out one.  Lefty Frank Gailey gave up a run on two hits in one inning and also struck out a batter.

Defence - The Gomes/Carreno battery were 1-for-2 in eliminating basestealers.  Perales threw out a runner at second from left field.

Brevard County @ Dunedin - Postponed

Game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today at 5:00 pm ET.

Fort Wayne 6 Lansing 5

Fort Wayne, IN - The Padres affiliate snapped a 2-2 with three runs in the fifth and never looked back.

Batting - Follower of @battersboxca on Twitter @JakeMarisnick, Jake Marisnick (3/4) reached base four times thanks to a walk while K.C. Hobson (2/5) doubled (19) and scored a pair of runs.  Bryson Namba (1/3) belted a solo home run (6) and brought home another with a sac fly.  Luis Hurtado (1/4) singled home one run and plated another with a ground ball.  Oliver Dominguez (0/2) managed to earn three bases on balls and scored a run.  Jack Murphy (0/3) and Gari Pena (0/3) stuck around for ball four once.  Markus Brisker (0/5) had an RBI groundout but whiffed with the bases loaded among his two strikeouts.  Marcus Knecht (0/5) didn't, as he collected the golden sombrero with four Ks.

Running - Dominguez stole second (9) and Marisnick pilfered the keystone bag (29).

Pitching - Marcus Walden gave up two runs on seven hits over four innings.  He threw a wild pitch and committed balk but his K-BB total was 3-0 and his groundout/airout score was 7-1.  Dustin Antolin took the loss (1-1) as he surrendered three runs on two hits and two walks over an inning.  Dayton Marze also yielded two hits and two walks but gave up just a single run over 1 1/3 innings.  Shawn Griffith allowed one of Marze's runners to cross home plate but stranded two others.  He gave up a hit, walked a batter and struck one out over 1 2/3 innings.

Defence - The Lugnuts posted a goose egg under the error column.

Everett 12 Vancouver 2

Everett, WA
- The Canadians scored the first and last runs of the game.  In between was the ol' poop sandwich that featured the Mariners affiliate racking up nine runs in the sixth.

Batting - Kevin Patterson (1/4) connected for his first homer of the season to give Vancouver their short-lived lead.  Pierce Rankin (2/3) drew a walk and Jonathan Jones (2/5) had the other multi-hit effort.  Garrett Maines (1/1) singled in a pinch-hit appearance and scored a run.  Roan Salas (1/1), Balbino Fuenmayor (1/3) and Randy Schwartz (1/3) also made a dent in the hit column.  Stephen McQuail (0/2) reached base via the base on balls.

Running - No SBs here.

Pitching - Blake McFarland (4-5) suffered the loss despite a respectable effort in which he gave up two runs on five hits over five innings.  He struck out five, walked no one and four of his nine outs in play were limited to the infield.  Lefty Shane Davis wore the battle scars in this one.  He was burned for eight runs in just 2/3 of an innings.  However, only two of the runs were earned.  Davis gave up a homer among three hits, walked a batter and struck out one.  Lefty Alex Pepe had problems with the long ball as he gave up two of them among three hits, one with the bases loaded that plated three of Davis' runners.  He struck out a batter in 1 1/3 innings.  Eric Brown worked a clean eighth that featured one punchout.

Defence - Andrew Burns had three clanks at short and Schwartz had one at third.  Everett stole two bases against the Davis-Rankin battery.

Bluefield 6 Princeton 2

Bluefield, WV - Five runs in the seventh and eighth innings helped Bluefield overcome a 2-1 deficit to down the Rays affiliate.

Batting - Art Charles (1/4) put Bluefield ahead for good with a two-run poke over the wall in right field for his 10th homer of the season.  Kevin Pillar (2/4) doubled and walked, Peter Mooney (1/3) had an RBI triple and two walks and Andy Fermin (1/3) also reached base three times with a pair of free passes.  Gustavo Pierre (2/5) and Javan Williams (2/4) were also in the multi-hit parade.  Chris Hawkins (1/4) had an RBI base knock to account for Bluefield's first run of the game and Aaron Munoz (0/3) drew a walk. Daniel Arcila (0/4) was the only Jay to wear the collar.

Running - Nothing in terms of steals.

Pitching - Lefty Tyler Ybarra put in a solid five innings by allowing just a two-run homer among four hits and a walk.  His K-BB total was 8-1 and four of his six outs in play were on terra firma.  However, the victory went to fellow lefty Mitchell Taylor (3-1).  All he did in his four innings was allow two hits while getting one groundball out, two flyball outs and...wait for it...nine Ks! That's 17 Princeton whiffs for you math whizzes out there.

Defence - Mooney dropped one at short, Munoz had one pitch get by him but Ybarra picked off a runner at first.

GCL Blue Jays 4 GCL Yankees 3 (Game 1 - 7 Innings)

Dunedin, FL
- The Jays erased a 2-0 deficit thanks in large part to a three-run fifth inning.

Batting - Mississauga's Dalton Pompey (1/2) doubled, drew two walks and scored twice in the leadoff spot.  Justin Atkinson (2/3) doubled and scored while Chris Peters (1/1) plated Atkinson with an RBI single to tie the game in the fifth.  He also drew a walk and scored a run.  Dickie Joe Thon (1/3) singled and walked and Eric Arce (0/1) drew a bases loaded walk among his two free passes. Santiago Nessy (0/2) collected an HBP RBI.

Running - Pompey stole two bases (19) and later scored on a wild pitch.

Pitching - Adonys Cardona overcame a two-run first inning with three scoreless frames afterwards.  He allowed four hits but racked up six Ks (striking out the side in the third) with no walks and five of his six outs in play were on the dirt.  Chris Roman was the winning pitcher (2-0) despite giving up a solo home run among three hits over two frames.  He did strike out a pair.  Colby Broussard gave up a hit and a walk but also had a K to notch the save (6) in the seventh.

Defence - No errors but the Yankees stole three bases against the Cardona-Nessy battery in three attempts.

GCL Blue Jays 1 GCL Yankees 0 - Game 2 (Suspended - Bottom 1st)

Tampa Bay, FL - The Jays got their first at-bat and the game's first run before the rains came early in the bottom of the first.

Batting - Pompey tripled and Ronald Melendez promptly singled him home.  Yuldemis Hernandez, Eric Arce and Alexys Rodriguez were then retired in order.

Running - No steals yet.

Pitching - Lefty Griffin Murphy retired the first batter he faced on a fly ball before issuing a walk.  However, he picked off the runner before the game was halted.

Defence - No errors yet.

DSL Angels 7 DSL Blue Jays 2

San Pedro de Macoris, DR - The Angels were up 4-0 by the time the Jays responded with two runs in the sixth but the Halos answered in kind with three runs of their own in the next half-inning.

Batting - Nelson Aguida (2/4) singled home a run with the other hits coming from Tonguar Perez (1/3), Emilio Guerrero (1/4) and Maydawin De La Cruz (1/4).  Angel Feliz (0/1) drew three walks and Mauricio Nagahashi (0/3) also earned a free pass.

Running
- Nagahashi (15) stole second base.

Pitching - Juan Cabrera was charged with the loss (0-1) by giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk over four innings but he did have a strikeout an inning as well as six groundball outs.  Daniel Tiburcio gave up two runs in one inning on three hits and a walk.  Edgar Manaure was mauled for three runs thanks in large part to four walks as well as a hit.  He also struck out a batter in 2/3 of an inning.  Steven Romero stranded the bases loaded for Manaure and rung up three batters over a perfect 2 1/3 innings.

Defence - Guerrero threw one away at third and Aguida had an errant pickoff throw from behind the plate.

Thanks for the links, #2JB.  It is interesting that Vancouver drew almost 4,000 fans to the game.  MILB.com reports that the Canadians are averaging almost exactly 4,000 per game, which is second in the league, and well above league average.  The affiliation with the Blue Jays appears to be working out.

The article on Nicolino is very interesting, although it seems to be a couple weeks old.  At that point, he was leading the league in strikeouts (with 51) and he had the second-best ERA in the league (1.22).  He is pursuing the club's all-time record of 100 strikeouts in a season, held by ... wait for it ...  Rich Harden.  Can anyone provide an update on those strikeout and ERA numbers?  Is he going to catch Harden's record?
PeteMoss - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 01:23 PM EDT (#240588) #
He's got 58 strikeouts now with a 1.20 ERA. Article was written on July 27th... so 2 weeks ago.
MatO - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 01:37 PM EDT (#240595) #

Nicolino has about 5 more appearances left and they really seem to be limiting his innings so I don't think there's any chance of him getting to 100 K's.

Happy 21st birthday to Anthony Gose.  He may no longer be referred to as a 20 year-old in AA.  Anthony celebrated his birthday by hitting his 12th HR today.

As I mentioned in another thread, the other big news today is McGowan's impressive four-inning shutout, allowing only 1 hit and two walks.

I'm really happy with the decision to draft Beede at #21, and I'm not really in favour of drafting for need, but Kolten Wong would have been an interesting alternative. The Cardinals second baseman (chosen 22nd overall) is hitting 327/385/497 in low-A ball, with Kevin Goldstein of BP predicting that he could be in AA by the end of 2012. It would be nice to have a stud 2B in the system.

Gotta give some props to Jake Marisnick. His last 10 games - .421/.511/.632 , 1 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 7 BB, 7 K, 4/4 SB.  Now up to .322/.394/.497 on the season. Great to see him turning tools into results.

Nestor Molina promoted to AA, as per the NH radio guy.
Mike Green - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 02:55 PM EDT (#240610) #
That is good news.  I wonder if Molina is going to find his way into a relief role in the major leagues, sooner rather than later.
eldarion - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 02:59 PM EDT (#240611) #
Agreed re: Marisnick. What's even more impressive are his very even left/right splits and his 29 stolen bases overall. He could be the complete package if he continues to improve his strength. An impressive prospect, no doubt.

"...the other big news today is McGowan's impressive four-inning shutout..." - Chinafan      That is truly great news !   The only thing that is more impressive than today's pitching result is McGowan's determination and will power and the amount of work that he has done in the face of such great adversities to have come back this far on his personal journey to recovery.   Congratulations and continued success to Dustin McGowan.

How many years ago is it now since that Monday morning game, I believe against this same Erie team, when the kid from Georgia was photographed standing on the mound in the midst of a snow flurry when he first tweaked his arm.

I think the late season promotions will start to occur in full force. It will be interesting how they deal with playoff runs. By my count, almost all of Toronto's teams are in playoff races.

hopefully Molina moving up means Lawrence gets to finish in Dunedin - and I'm still expecting Nicolino to go to Lansing...

Kevin Gray is reporting that McGowan threw 43 pitches, his fastball sat 93-94; secondary stuff was excellent including one slider at 90.

Has any plan regarding McGowan been voiced by AA? Do we know if he's slated to compete for a spot in the rotation or in the pen?
Gerry - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#240619) #
Dalton Pompey and Misaul Diaz have been promoted to Bluefield.  Pompey has been playing very well in the GCL.
China fan - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 04:25 PM EDT (#240620) #

McGowan was scheduled to throw 65 to 70 pitches today (according to a Shi Davidi column on Sunday), so he was a victim of his own efficiency.  Sounds like the Jays decided to limit him to 4 innings, even though he was far below the pitch limit.

As for Molina's promotion:  it's great news, and richly deserved, but it's interesting that Hutchison's ERA and WHIP at Dunedin are even better than Molina's numbers.  The only real difference is that Molina has pitched twice as many innings as Hutchison.   Assuming that Hutchison can continue at his current pace, he will deserve a promotion to New Hampshire soon too.  Hutchison's performance at Dunedin, incidentally, has been much better than that of McGuire and Jenkins before their similar promotions to New Hampshire.

Sneeps - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 04:26 PM EDT (#240621) #
Eric Arce must be annoyed.  Not that Pompey doesn't deserve the promotion... but if he does, Arce certainly does as well.
sam - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#240622) #
Arce has been playing well but he's new to the organization and a high school kid, albeit removed by a year.

He might get that promotion, but I imagine once the deadline for 2011 draftees to sign has passed.

Hutchison and Marisnick may be my two favourite players in the farm system (alongside Dustin McGowan).
MatO - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#240626) #
Could Jacob Anderson be ready to take Pompey's place?  He's apparently signed but is he "officially" signed?
hypobole - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 04:44 PM EDT (#240627) #
Re: Molina's promotion. His ERA is actually slighly better than Hutch's, but he's also 1 1/2 years older, has spent the entire season in Dunedin and his #'s are better than both McGuire's and Jenkins' also.

From Goldstein's Future Shock blog:

d'Arnaud " Numbers are crossing into crazy-great land"

Marisnick:"rocketing up prospect lists"

and finally Snider after his 4 for 5: "Your guess on him is as good as mine at this point"

greenfrog - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 05:09 PM EDT (#240631) #
Notes from the latest BA chat (with John Manuel):

- Sounds like Marisnick is having a blast, breaking through, winning a lot and thriving in a lineup with Crouse and Knecht. No need to rush him

- Stilson is expected to sign

- Alvarez' slider a bit short for him to be a #1 or 2, but excited to see him pitch. He could exceed expectations

- Texas, Toronto and Tampa have the three best farm systems in baseball (with Toronto's ranking based on "the system's overall pitching depth that puts it in the top 3, coupled with their upper-level hitters such as d'Arnaud and Gose and the Marisnick-led Lansing team")

- Syndergaard and Nicolino both have "rotation potential." BA has an upcoming feature on Nicolino
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 05:09 PM EDT (#240632) #
The main reason Marisnick has not been promoted, I believe, is because the organization is trying to keep the outfield trio (quartet if you include Brisker) together because they reportedly get along so well. A three-week promotion, while it gets the feet wet for 2012, is by no means a make-or-break move.

Anyone know why Crouse and McDade are on the DL?
DaveB - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 06:53 PM EDT (#240640) #
It has been reported on EL game broadcasts that McDade has sore knees.

Gerry - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 07:22 PM EDT (#240643) #
Crouse has a strained quad.

One Blue Jay front office person told me that Lansing are in the playoffs and play before several thousand fans. Dunedin are in a playoff race but they play in front of a couple of hundred people. On balance it is better to stay in Lansing for a few weeks.
TamRa - Wednesday, August 10 2011 @ 08:37 PM EDT (#240649) #
^^
(on the Lansing thing)

I'd come around to the view that they really value the playoff race - particularly with the team they have been playing with all year - I hadn't thought about the crowd factor but it makes sense.

Another factor, potentially, is that with the outfield now packed on the major league level, the team can easily afford to move the Three Amigos one level a year for now.

Thanks Dave/Gerry for the injury updates.

Just a thought re: our MiLB system ranking. Removing Lawrie and Alvarez from the minor league system will impact the rankings, but  by how much? I imagine part of that will be answered within a week when the draft signings become official, but as things stand now, even with those 2 removed from the equation, I still think we would be top 5 just because of the sheer depth. Yes/no? (I'm asking this even though i realize Alvarez will probably be back in N.H. before he loses rookie eligibility)
